I've written off Weimer, but I'd rather have Junis than Montas.

yep.

I believe both Ross and Hall can be real weapons in short stints.  If they believe Huddy and Megill (maybe even Paredes) can come back strong, then maybe, just maybe, they are modeling that Royals run.  But they need to add a couple of bats then.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

Reds rank 21st in defense (Brewers 4th) so that should help Montas.

Similar Pitchers to Frankie Montas Based on Velocity and Movement: 2019 Brandon Woodruff, 2020 Brandon Woodruff (https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/frankie-montas-593423?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb)

I am hoping the team saw something they could "fix". One of those Sveum posts that show us the upside with him would be perfectly cromulent right now.

It’s 14 million this year with a 2 million dollar buy out on a mutual option. Brewers likely on hook for 6-7 million MINUS the 3.3 they owed Junis in salary and buy out. Rarely If ever are mutual options exercised

I understood that the Brewers did not have to pay Montas the full $14M. I just don't understand how he got that contract in the 1st place based on his past performance.  Players have zero ground to complain any more that they are not getting their fair share of the pie.

People have said it already. A bit of a headscratcher...underwhelming...meh.

Montas just hasn't been that good. Junis has been much of the season - but has seemed perfectly fine coming out of the pen since his return.

Club gave up on Joey, but he's not exactly been good in the minors. Low sell - not that it would ever get better. But we shall see.

Club must think they can right Montas. The guy has been pretty up and down in his career. Let's hope for the best.

.... That's... That's not how pies made for 750 people work.

I don't like it because to make it feel worthwhile Montas has turn it around, and Weimer has to both not be able to hit in MLB and also not just be a random Brewer killer. Too many paths to regret here for my liking. It's worth noting that Joey has had a pretty good stretch in AAA with that power coming back the last month or so. Nothing definitive but it's not like he's still looking completely lost at the plate.

Hmmm really steep price for Montas. Not sure I like losing Joey.

Obviously hope Montas performs well.

I'll reserve my final judgement until the deadline. I really hope this is the firs of many.

Explain how it works then. You can be crappy at your job, make $14M in guaranteed money and still complain that the owners are taking advantage of you?

750 guys are splitting one pie and 30 guys are splitting an even bigger pie and your problem is with one of the 750 maybe getting a bit too large a slice?

Yeah but Wiemer is an asset. Cost controlled, good defensive and has some chance of higher offensive ceiling. That is something many teams want. So Wiemer or Junis for Montas makes sense, but 2-for-1 and nothing else coming back (cash, or PTBNL, or a lower level prospect). Very very curious.

I have two thoughts: the above, followed by why in the world would Cincinnati want Junis for two months? I guess I trust the organization if they feel they can get something done with Montas, but I'd much rather have kept Junis & tried to substitute a pitcher more of the ilk that we gave to Colorado. Looks like Cincy wanted the hometown boy.

Not a Daniel Norris-for-Reese Olson thumbs down, but a thumbs down.

Seems like whenever there is renegotiating of the bargaining agreement players like to view it as one big pie that they never get enough of. I have a problem with more than one. And...I don't really have a "problem" with the pay...its the constant position that the owners are the greedy ones. Everyone seems to be making plenty of money. Owners and players.  Sorry, didn't mean to steer the topic off course. Last I'll say about it in this thread.

I don't speak in terms of who's 'greedy' but when you look at MLB and the other major sports, MLB players get a smaller pct of the revenue. It'd fallen below 40% last year...and I would doubt it's increased much this year.

I don’t get the Joey love (Of course I never get the blind prospect love).  He was a fourth round pick that defied the odds and made the majors where he mostly could not hit a lick.

This year he’s been no higher than 6th/7th on the depth chart: Yelich, Frelick, Chourio, Perkins, Mitchell etc. Where five of the players in front of him are pre arb eligible, former bonus babies or on long term contracts.

This trade is a reliever who’s been hurt for most the year and pitched in 10 of 100+ games for a back of the rotation starter, and the Brewers threw in a young OFer who’s a fringe major leaguer and likely close to his ceiling.

A lot are over valuing Wiemer.  Wiemer had very little value around MLB.  There was an article by Bowden on the Athletic where he asked about Wiemer to some execs and they said he was maybe a 5th OF.  The valuation for Wiemer is probably closer to $1mm in excess value which is about what the Brewers gave up as Junis and Montas contracts just about even out.

Yeah clearly Brewers viewed him as expendable considering the depth they have…….heck they might view Hicklen s a better prospect.

He earned a $14 million rebound contract because at the 2022 deadline he looked on track to be making $200 million in free agency. Then he got injured. But teams are going to keep chasing that upside for quite a while.
