I'm so torn, the game will be over by the time I'm off work.  Do I check the score or just watch it from the beginning after work....

Welp I cheated and checked in on the score.  Glad I won't be seeing this one, I've had a poopy enough day.  Get em tomorrow.

We are just losers unfortunately.

The really galling thing is that the organizational philosophy for about ten years has hammered pitching and defense. That is a demoralizing stat.

Same crap every year.

Because we build our roster to be competitive over a 162 game sample size and not a 3 game series. We’ve proven we can build a roster to get us to the playoffs but we’re not willing to invest in the marginal improvements to be dominant in the postseason. Last time I felt we could go toe to toe with anyone was our 2018 and 2019 teams when we paid guys like Moustakas and Grandal vs trying to get buy with cheaper alternatives.

Freddy is not our ACE, I posted that before the game even started.

If Peralta is your ace, you don't have one. We do not. I'm not putting this loss on him. I am saying we do not have an ace.

1000000% agree.  My coworker and I talk about this often. Things have to go perfect for them to have a shot.  They didn’t go perfect today and they folded.

Hell, I'd feel the same about the NLCS.

Depends. 4-3 would suck but I'd still be excited. 4-0 is a different story.

Here's the thing. That Mets lineup was just better than the Brewers. Here's the season wRC+ from the starting lineups tonight.

Mets

Lindor - 137 wRC+
Iglesias - 137 wRC+
Nimmo - 109 wRC+
Vientos - 133 wRC+
Alonso - 122 wRC+
Winker - 118 wRC+
Marte - 104 wRC+
Taylor - 98 wRC+
Alvarez - 102 wRC+

Brewers

Turang - 87 wRC+
Chourio - 117 wRC+
Contreras - 131 wRC+
Mitchell - 126 wRC+
Adames - 119 wRC+
Bauers - 87 wRC+
Hoskins - 98 wRC+
Frelick - 86 wRC+
Ortiz - 104 wRC+

Mets worst hitter had a 98 wRC+. Brewers have 4 hitters with a wRC+ of 98 or lower.

Wanted to watch a good playoff game today and couldn’t! Had a very bad feeling about Peralta. Not an ACE for sure, maybe a 3. Had a great first, absolutely horrible 2nd, like he has early on in games.  Horrible lineup! Did not make any sense at all. Blame this sickening game mostly on Peralta! and our Rookie! coach.

I meant just getting to that point.

Someone made the comment earlier in the thread that it wasn't about talent.  It is absolutely about talent.

I probably won't be checking on this game thread until after tomorrow's game. I have a good sense of how it'll play out either way. If we win, I'll stay away Thursday too :) Hopefully I'll be back celebrating on Friday.

If not, that's baseball.

Here's what I think:

This is a good team that is having a GREAT season. Nothing's going to change that. This is the best-run organization in baseball. If you want to use postseason results as a way to denigrate the "bites at the apple" philosophy, I won't stop you. People do what they need to do to feel better about frustrating stuff, especially frustrating stuff they cannot control.

For me, though, what we are experiencing is what the playoffs are. We just feel it more because we're there EVERY year now. How would you feel about being a Mariners fan? Or a Pirates fan? A Reds fan? Even a Rays or A's fan? You can't feel this stuff if you're not there to feel it, and most teams aren't. The moneyball A's weren't chokers. The 2004 White Sox weren't this perfectly magical team. Neither were the 2019 Nats. Those great Braves teams of the 90s lost A LOT of postseason series.

All of which is to say, I prefer to keep my pain and frustration and hope (and it's really the hope that kills you) to these single-game drama factories. It's enough not to be able to control one result. Attempting to use that result as a window into the soul of the franchise would break me.

This is still a fun team. We get to spend at least one more night with them. I'll be sad whenever and however it ends, but I wouldn't trade the Brewers for any other baseball team right now, and that's not just because of Wisconsin DNA.

The “undaunted” thing gets a lot of play because the media can easily make it into a cutesy story. Murphy, like any other coach worth their salt, knows that sports requires narrative, and a young team needs to learn resilience and how to navigate a long and arduous season.

But all that goes out the window in the postseason. The stakes are different, the stress is different, the put your head down and work like a mule climbing a mountain approach doesn’t work when your season can end in 18 innings, or in three pitches. So I doubt Murphy is making too much of a deal about being “undaunted” right now, but in light of today’s events, it sure is an annoying media talking point.

The cutesy catch phrases are fine when you have at least some degree of average postseason play to fall back on.

When you've dropped almost all of your last dozen postseason games, it really gets eye rolling. At that point it's like, shut up and just win a game.

As of right now I would call Tobias Meyers our ace.

If we were to go to the World Series and lose I would most certainly not be disappointed in the season. Oh sure, in the moment I'd be sad and bummed that they lost, but I'd be very pleased with the team and excited for the future.

And excited to have shown actual progress. This team has been here way too much to continue acting like the lights are just too damn bright for them every time they get here.

I think they can fall short of the World Series & still show progress. In fact, given the preseason expectations they already have.

Many post-season failures over the last 6,7 years. The fans stay the same, but some of these players have been here for part of it, some for none of it.

Just a little perspective on a disappointing day.

One team has been fighting for their lives for months and the other team hadn't played a single high stakes game since last October.

I mean we cannot outspend any of our playoff competition to assemble a 26 man roster, so if we are only expecting to advance if we can match up talent wise in any playoff series, we had better keep our hopes and aspirations low.

I have major, major beef with the level of player that Pat Murphy apparently believes Jake Bauers is when he assembles his lineups, but other than that, this was as winnable of a playoff matchup as we could have asked for.

Until MLB starts going March Madness playoff style and seeding the whole league #1-#30, we are going to need to beat a good team to advance one of these times.

Well, they'll be fighting for their life tomorrow, so they better bring a lot more than they brought today.

IMO "annoying" and "media" almost become redundant. But I think the undaunted thing describes pretty well how this team responded to the ebbs & flows of the season, given their youth. The youth also is at least a partial explanation of how you can win five in a row vs LA & Cleveland, sweep Atlanta on the road & win series at Baltimore & vs Philly & yet finish .500 or a little below vs people like Miami, Colorado & Pittsburgh. I think the term describes their regular season well. But you're right; a LOT of stuff goes out the window this time of year.

I'm more disappointed with the way the Brewers responded to the 5th inning than the 5th inning itself. It's hard to say that they don't deserve to be booed right now.

No it's not.  Gimme a break.
