Todd Rosiak just put out a Tweet/X post saying Wilken hurt his knee celebrating the first half title.

"Imaging showed inflammation/swelling. Extent of injury not conclusive at this time."

Have to think it might be serious adding everything up

That is a gut punch that no one needed.

Dang it. I love the fact they won the division, but have to be careful.  Missing serious time will be an awful development, hoping Wilken is not seriously hurt and also that Adam’s will not be out long.

Welp… Burke to AA, Adams to 3B?

Adams has a shoulder contusion from a home plate collision. Not sure how long he's out.

A promotion of Burke may depend on whether Boeve is ready to play 2B or 3B. Otherwise, Areinamo or Eduardo might make sense.

T-Rats are going to lose someone, that we know for certain.  I wouldn't be surprised to see Burke be that guy.

Tough break for Brock.  I'm so bummed by this news.  Fingers crossed it isn't to serious and he is back out to finish the year either in AA or AAA.

Trying to muster all the positive vibes to Wilken.

Initial diagnosis - a dislocated patella, also known as a dislocated kneecap, occurs when the kneecap (patella) slips out of its normal groove on the front of the knee joint. This can happen due to a direct blow to the knee, a sudden change in direction while the foot is planted, or even from underlying conditions like weak leg muscles or a misaligned kneecap.

Symptoms:
  • Swelling and stiffness: The knee may swell quickly and become difficult to bend or straighten.

  • Visible deformity: The kneecap may appear to be out of place, often shifted to the outer side of the knee.

  • Popping or clicking sensation: Some individuals may hear or feel a popping or clicking sound when the kneecap dislocates.

  • Instability or buckling: The knee may feel unstable or give way, especially when bearing weight.

  • Sudden, severe pain: Pain is typically felt in the front of the knee and can worsen with movement.

Treatment:
  • Immediate medical attention: A dislocated kneecap should be treated by a healthcare professional. Do not attempt to relocate the kneecap yourself.

  • Reduction: A doctor or other trained professional can manually relocate the kneecap (reduction).

  • Immobilization: The knee is often immobilized with a brace or splint to allow healing.

  • Pain management: Pain medication and anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed.

  • Physical therapy: Rehabilitation exercises are crucial for regaining strength, flexibility, and stability in the knee.

  • Surgery: In some cases, particularly with recurrent dislocations or significant damage to the knee structures, surgery may be necessary to repair torn ligaments or stabilize the kneecap.

Recovery:
  • Initial recovery:
Walking with crutches may be necessary initially, and it can take several weeks to fully recover.

  • Long-term:
It can take 6-8 weeks to fully recover, and some individuals may experience ongoing instability or pain, especially if the injury was severe or if there were prior issues.

  • Preventing future dislocations:
Strengthening the muscles around the knee, especially the quadriceps, and addressing any underlying anatomical issues can help prevent future dislocations.

Is this what he was diagnosed with??

If so, freak accident, but better prognosis than a ligament tear. He may be out for 2 months if this is what is going on with him maybe?

I had this injury 20 years ago. It’s likely advancements have been made. I rehabbed after the dislocation and was back to 100% about 2 months later, only to have it dislocate again 8 months after that. After the 2nd dislocation, surgery was required because there was too much ligament damage. Wasn’t back to 100% until 6 months post-surgery. Hopefully he can rehab and not have it happen again but who knows. Tatis tried to do this with his shoulder and it kept popping out, eventually had surgery. Fingers crossed!

We do have another thread on Wilken and his injury.

Do we need two threads?  And we may want to keep speculation to a minimum and report updates as they come along.

I am still unsure if this thread was started because the poster knew of an update or diagnosis, but I hadn't seen anything updated.

Should we close one thread and/or merge?

Sorry - I didn’t see the other thread. Happy for a moderator to merge the two.

I saw a post on X by Jack Stern saying Wilken was getting a second opinion after receiving a dislocated patella diagnosis.

Glad it doesn't appear to be something requiring a surgery where Wilken is out until this time next year....but this still really sucks as he was really making a case for a promotion and being on the doorstep of a corner IF position with the Brewers as early as next Spring.

Dog piles of grown men wearing metal spikes sprinting towards pitching mounds or home plate celebrating are generally not a good idea.  It's amazing how frequently players actually do get hurt in these scenarios.  I get being excited and celebrating, but can there be at least a little bit of "act like you've been there before" mentality to avoid these sort of injuries?
