Given every team faces the exact same billion situations it seems fair to say the ones who did the best in all scenarios is actually the best. It's like testing to see the most athletic. Some people may be able to do more pushups, others can run long distances better, others can sprint faster, and so on. When we take all of those things together the one who did better overall is considered the best athlete.

I knew someone would say that, but nope, it isn't the same. This year is a perfect example of how and why. Look at the version of the Dodgers that the Brewers went 6-0 against as opposed to the one that swept them. It is barely even the same team. The Brewers can't throw Peralta and Preister on the DL at their leisure for "rest" and come out on the other side with 95 wins.

They have the luxury of half-arsing it to 94 wins, but for the Brewers to do that, they have to scratch for every win on the margins, which they've gotten exceptionally good at doing.

You have been seeing this in the NBA for quite some time now, and the expanded playoff field is allowing that strategy into the MLB.

The Dodgers going full throttle this season may have won 120 games and scored 1000 runs. Only kidding a little bit.

Topic was not just Brewers vs the Bluejays. Part of it was the NL Central is the strongest division in baseball, I say its not.  Statistics can be bent anyway you like.  Thats why data manipulation is used all the time in politics and the pharmaceutical industry.  Also why pro sports teams have there own statisical analasis departments.

Ok.

1-This started with comparing the Brewers offense to the Jays offense and then saying it wasn't that good DESPITE the fact... that we scored more runs and in Gm1... they hit Snell better than Cincy, Philly and we did.
2-You keep saying "statistics" can be bent any way. Can EVERY statistic though? Or is that just called... facts at that point?

-.625 winning pct vs teams in the post-season.
-Hit WORSE vs NLC teams than their season averages EXCEPT for... the NLC team that had the 3rd best ERA in the NL, 7th best in MLB
-60-40 vs teams .500 or better
-Balanced schedules=Fewer games vs the NLC and you play every teame.

What stats are being "Manipulated?" I mean, you can just keep saying....effectively 'nuh-uh, stats can be manipulated,' but exactly what stat supports YOUR argument? Just feelings?

But yes, MLB teams have their own analytics departments. I don't know WHAT that has to do with this conversation. The entire purpose of those analytics departments is to put their players in positions to SCORE RUNS and WIN games. For the purposes of this discussion, I don't care HOW we got there... the fact is... we are. There's no reasonable argument that can be made that the Brewers season long numbers looked better because they played in the NLC vs any other division save for MAYBE the AL East.

I also don't know why you KEEP talking about politicians and pharmaceutical companies. This isn't even tangentially related to either.

Dani said the big-market Blue Jay fat boys just thrashing the old guys from LA. 😆 LOL, Toronto crowd chanting, "WE DON'T NEED YOU"  To Ohtani when he bats. Just awesome stuff.

Seen this and thought it was interesting.

Check out how the World Series rosters came together

Except it doesn't when the brand of the sport played in October is almost unrecognizable from April - July. It means you were 3rd in runs in the regular season and nothing more.

Those run totals, over 162 games, are racked up against a billion situations where you're facing a pitcher who will never touch a baseball in a playoff series, batters that will not even be on a roster, spot starters, 15 games against the Pirates, etc. With 12 teams in the postseason it has officially become about getting there with any seed, and if that means you drop a bunch of games in June, so be it. I think the Dodgers have realized that 110 wins doesn't get them anywhere special.

You have to do what you have to do to get through those 162 games, which favors the Brewers as they have mastered the art of winning those margin games. But when it comes to stacking the best lineup possible, I don't think we're on the level of teams like TOR, LAD, PHL, NYY. Doesn't mean we can't ever beat them, but they have better weapons.

I find it hard to believe that most of Toronto's key postseason role players are any better than our guys.

They have a bunch of career .700 OPS guys who all got hot at the same time and are OPSing 1.000 in the postseason...Ernie Clement, Addison Barger, Nathan Lukes etc. Even IKF and Andres Gimenez have been serviceable. And then you top it off with their stars putting up star-like numbers and you have the recipe for a ring. Same thing happened to the Braves when they won it all a couple years ago.

Seattle almost beat Toronto while getting essentially nothing offensively from their role players. The difference between us and Seattle was that Seattle at least got big contributions from their star players (and their deadline acquisitions wink wink nudge nudge). We were dependent on an injured Chourio, got middling numbers from Contreras, and nothing from Yelich.

Why don't they start with a man on 2nd in extras ??

Is this a playoff thing, or a World Series thing ??

I gotta go to bed, it's almost midnight.

Games starting way too flippin late, (losing viewership for sure) !!

Man on 2nd is only a regular season thing.

Boy, the Blue Jays play 15 in the ALCS and 16+ in the WS...

If there were ever a point to be made for a ghost runner, this is it. Nobody likes these games other than old school/die hard fans and that contingent left the building 10 years ago. Sheesh.

I would hate this in the regular season but it’s a lot of fun in the World Series. It’s only a double game at this point so the equivalent of 3 full OT in hockey.
