Milwaukee Brewers To Remain On Fan Duel Sports -- Now contract terminated

While some Major League Baseball teams have transitioned to a direct-to-consumer model, the Milwaukee Brewers will stick with the regional sports network (RSN) model for at least one more season.

Adam McCalvy of MLB.com is reporting that the Milwaukee Brewers extended their agreement with Main Street Sports, which owns FanDuel Sports Network Wisconsin. This will be the Brewers' third season on the network.

While the product offered by MLB helps market fans avoid blackouts, RSN deals typically generate more revenue for teams. It's worth noting that there were plans for the team to be broadcast by MLB following the 2024 season before they reversed course and agreed to a deal with the network.

While it's unknown how long the deal will run, Rob Manfred has targeted 2028 as a date to make sweeping moves with baseball's local television contracts. It is unlikely this Brewers' contract goes beyond the 2027 season, at most.

Sentiment on X seems generally negative toward the announcement, specifically citing major issues with the app. What has your experience been with the network and its app?

Fan Duel is part of my TDS package, I don't have to use an app.

Never have an issue, except for all the times the games are on prime, apple, or whatever other streaming service ruins it for specific games.

Never had an issue with the app this past season. Only hiccup was the autorenew at the end of the season thing a lot of people had on here but I believe that's resolved.

I had a subscription through Amazon Prime.  There were occasional glitches in the presentation in that the game wouldn't show up on the normal Fanduel Network subscription tab, but you could usually still find it through alternative menus or tabs.

I switched to subscribing through Prime this year and I thought it was much better than the Fanduel app. Only issue I've had is audio occasionally de-syncs and is delayed after commercial breaks.

I think that audio glitch was happening to everyone, I was getting it too on the FanDuel app. It was very annoying but they did finally get it fixed.

I'll have to price compare between Prime and FanDuel next season and see if there's any difference. FanDuel does usually offer a season pass that's less expensive than their regular monthly price, if Prime does the same then I may try it out.

You will at some point.  The way the cable companies are going it is going to look more like the streaming services.  Get ready to start using the app.  You probably have another five or so years but at some point cable will be switching.

I'll put this here, the news that ESPN has overtaken 6 clubs local TV deals is not good for the fan. ESPN continues to try to force fans to purchase their over the top streaming service. I would imagine that fans of the Guardians, Padres, Twins, Diamondbacks, Rockies, and Mariners will now have to get that service and possibly pay an upcharge to watch their teams. Only a matter of time until its all 30.

We'll see. In many ways this is a trial period for 2028 when MLB will put everything for sale at once.

The Mariners were not on MLB.tv locally last year, they were still using their own RSN and a terrible streaming app to go along with it. So it might get better.

This would actually be very good for small market teams.  The largest income discrepancy between large and small market teams are the local TV deals.  The Dodgers current TV deal is over $8 billion dollars.  MLB selling all of the local TV deals as one package and splitting up the profits evenly between all 30 teams would be a massive shift to evening payrolls between the large and small markets.

It could just crush the Dodgers finances because of all that deferred money. But getting better defacto revenue sharing would be a positive.

if this means that all team get the same revenue, its good for the brewers and other small markets. My point was that the cost to watch them on TV has increased. Its not increased enough for me not to pay that much, but ESPN+ is now 30/month.

This is just the national deals.  And I think the deal here is they are bundling everything together nationally at the same time (must have different times in the past?).

I don't think this is different from what we currently have, unless they are making more games (quantity) "national".

Local deals MAY be included, but probably only those clubs that are struggling to find their own local deal is my guess.  But definitely not the Dodgers, Yankees etc local deals.

Talk of fan duel in another thread made me think of this, but how is this still a thing.  First it was FSN and they lost money until ballys bought the rights.  They they lost money till they merged or were bought out by fan duel.  How long until people stop saying I'll put money into that and mlb is forced to figure out a way to distribute games to the fans themselves.

I think the problem is that the individual teams can't survive on their own.  Probably is best the ones who don't own their network just band together and make one big network.  I have always thought the NHL and MLB would make a great pairing.  There is only a small overlap is in April and then playoffs go to their normal channels.

If MLB takes over the teams that don't already own their broadcasting  then having the games on Amazon or another streaming service would be best.  It would then be on the teams to find a local broadcasting channel so the old fogies can watch on cable.

Wait!!! Do I need the rabbit ears for that?

Will I still be able to get Wheel of Fortune?

The solution for more parity in baseball lies with these local tv contracts.  Getting something collectively done so more dollars are spent in FA for all teams would be my focus….somehow tie this money with small markets using it on the FA market might be the way for bigger markets  to ok more revenue sharing.

As someone who loves the NHL and MLB this would be awesome for me.
