I don' want to derail this but how does Henderson achieve his success? I'm not knowledgeable enough. I see a low 90s fastball and seemingly very good changeup. I don't recall seeing much else? Is he a two pitch pitcher or is there a cutter in there too?

It is a bridge cutter he is still trying to figure out how to spin a slider. In a small sample size it doesn't look that bad in all honesty. The main issue with Logan is his availability. He has had a litany of injuries throughout his short ML career. Can his body handle the workload? He is a good young pitcher that has only performed when available. Would you trade 6 years of that for a couple months. Oh and that is before even factoring what I think is a top 50s range prospect in Adamczewski and the highest upside lotto ticket we have in Moneys (nobody is untouchable in the DSL but he is getting there) per the batted ball data Spencer shared.

Yet if it were the Yankees or Dodgers mocked to trade for Skubal, the packages would center around MLB roster fillers and 17-year-old rookie league prospects.

It’s the tax the Brewers must pay for having the audacity to compete against big market teams.

We shouldn't be shopping for Skubal. It's ridiculous to even think about if that is truly the cost. Everytime I read an article from the media or BSPN it is basically an open letter to Milwaukee's FO with the subtext of trying to coerce them to make a massive overpay. It is a joke. ESPN can rot for what they are.

someone said the quiet thing out loud. Same goes for a lot of "top 100" lists.

I wouldn't trade Henderson for Skubal straight up right now.

Henderson's performances have certainly narrowed that gap between what one could expect in a playoff start from the two players. Then you add the years...

I have the same reservations about including Henderson in a trade for Skubal. If they did I wouldn't include either Adamczewski or Moneys but rather something like Brett Wichrowski and Handelfry Encarnacion.

I'm definitely not a prospect hugger and I am certainly more liberal about moving guys that many here but Henderson, Adamczewski AND Moneys for a rental? I'm sorry, what?

If it were me, you either get Henderson and a risky bat prospect or Adamczewski and a much lower ceiling pitcher. And Moneys is too young and promising as a throw in.

I think I would do Skubal for Henderson and Moneys plus filler. Henderson is worth enough that we shouldn’t have to give up another top-10.

My prediction is that Skubal goes to Tampa though. I think they are going to be willing to overpay because of the political implications with their new stadium push. That makes us a prime candidate for Mason Miller if he is available since the Padres won’t trade him to LA. And what position has been responsible for more of our postseason failures than closer?

Moneys is gonna be a star I have deep conviction that he is on the Pena Made path. No I would not give up any prospects like that when by the team's own definition they win on the periphery. Mason Miller just makes zero sense for what he will cost. Only if you can convert him to a starter again in subsequent years.

If the Brewers could achieve the exact prospect price that landed them CC Sabathia I would do the trade in a heartbeat. The problem with that is not knowing until years later that the Brewers "only" gave up the equivalent of Michael Brantley in the trade.

I don't know who the Matt LaPorta, Zach Jackson and Rob Bryson equivalents are in their system right now. LaPorta felt like a huge spend at the time and Brantley was definitely not a throw in. I have zero recollection of who Jackson or Bryson were at all.

In any event, I feel like the price will be higher for Skubal than it was for CC. I don't think I'm for that. I just don't buy that it would make that much of a difference. The prospects that are coming in the next year or two feel much more impactful to me.

LA can throw their prospects away and not really feel it, they can just buy free agents to replace them. I think they win this sweepstakes pretty easily if they are determined to get Skubal. It's in their best interests to not allow the Braves or Brewers to get him, they can afford to get him just to deprive other teams the opportunity.

Miz is a generational talent, at least pitching like one. Of course, how many years will we get of that level? 1, 2, 5?

We have the deepest farm in baseball, you could trade for Skubal and still a top farm system.

The combination of Miz and Skubal would likely make this team arguably the best chance to win a World Series in team history. Especially if a healthy Harrison is also still on the team. It also would increase our odds of getting the #1 seed exponentially too.

Whine about the Dodgers spending money and then whine when they get Skubal when we clearly have the trade capital to do it? I mean, at that point stop pretending like you are trying to win.  If we cry poor hoarding prospects then Attanasio needs to refuse to field another team until MLB evens the playing field if it is really that bad.

And yah, the reality is we could trade for Skubal and it will likely not result in a World Series. Just like the litany of trades we have made before that resulted in no ring. But that’s sports and a change of attempt trying to win may be welcomed. It’s been almost a decade and we haven’t even made it to the WS. We can hoard all the prospects, but in 5 years when Miz is a more normal pitcher (or a crippled mess like DeGrom) and we suddenly do t have the pitching to win…well, what ifs will be made.

It is fun to put your chips in at the casino. Most people leave disappointed. The dopamine rush fades and you're left with the losses.

I'm not against a trade at face value it just depends on the price. My feeling is the price wouldn't be worth it. Maybe I'll be proven wrong.

The price is almost never worth it, because as we can see after over 50 years as a franchise, we have no rings. Winning the World Series is a lot like winning the lottery, can’t win the lottery without gambling.

I don’t know if there is a right or wrong answer in this dilemma of a trade deadline, to be honest. If 1/10 years biting the apple we gambled at a bigger bite, I think I respect that decision regardless of the outcome.

The Brewers are gambling whether or not they push the chips for a Skubal trade so it's not like they aren't still trying they're just placing different wagers.

To me the only way a big pay to get Skubal is worth it is by winning the WS. All or nothing doesn't feel like a smart move. That's not to say that there isn't a way to get Skubal and not have it be the big pay that I fear. It's all just unknown right now. You have a level of risk you're comfortable with and I have my own.

The rest of this is just rambling thoughts... feel free to stop here lol.

I think of the Bucks a lot in this scenario. Thank god they won a championship. I can not imagine the pain of doing all the things they've done and to have gotten to the point they got to this off season and not have that championship. I already checked out on them before last season their future looked so bad, there's a little hope there now but it's going to be a long road.

I don't think the Brewers are really close to that even if they did a really stupid trade but if they get reckless and don't make it it can be devastating, not just in the present but in the future.

The other problem with the "go for it no matter what" mentality is that it comes back again the next season, and the next season, and the next season. Fans don't care if it worked or not they want you to do the thing, especially if you did the thing last season why not do it again? It's sure to work this time right?

I think this is a totally reasonable perspective. And maybe actually shifted my thought process on pursuing him.

this is a unique situation that rarely ever comes up. One of the best 3-4 SP in all of baseball is available and we likely have the players to get a deal done. Literally any team can use an ace level pitcher. Skubal is the type of player who could single handedly increase our odds of winning a World Series due to his role and skill.

im not expecting it to happen and I’ve even said in other comments that I probably wouldn’t want to give up what it would take to get him. However, as the deadline draws nearer and the likelihood of Skubal being traded increased… I can’t help but throw caution to the wind and change my tune of wanting to acquire him.

Steve Phillips is a moron…..lol

This is one of the most asinine trade proposals I have ever seen in my life. Surely he can't be serious.

Craziness. Who are the Brewers bidding agains in a scenario where they give up the #1 prospect plus a few top 50?

Posted

my guess is Detroit wanted Henderson, Brewers said no. Brewers countered with Fischer plus Hardin or similar.

Being that he is the whole reason behind Bobby Bonilla Day, it is very difficult for me to take anything Steve Phillips says seriously. He is also widely known for gutting the Mets farm system with overpay trades for Mike Piazza, Al Leiter and Armando Benitez. He did luck himself into David Wright, but that wasn't enough to save his legacy.
