Bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, bases loaded, down by 3 runs, right handed pitcher on the mound... Who do you want coming to the plate?

Doesn't matter who started the game, this is not a pinch hitting situation, just a simple question, who do you want hitting in that scenario?

Vaughn or Frelick

So your answer is Frelick.  Cool.

It's not rocket science, just answer the question.

Maybe a stats guy could really dig in and find out which player has had the most success with bases loaded vs a right handed pitcher in their career?

No my answer is it's way too close for anyone to say one or the other is the clear choice. These are very similar level hitters against RHP both in their careers and since Vaughn became a Brewer.

So you just can't answer the question?  You don't have a gut reaction?
It's an interesting scenario, and you are arguing just for the sake of arguing if you can't answer the question.

There is no right or wrong answer, no prizes, you won't even be ridiculed for your answer.

Why waste time in this thread if you refuse to answer one simple question?

Meh, ok then, you do you.

All I was doing was sharing stats that add context to a question. That's it. You just don't like what the stats say.

Not true, I'm not asking for stat comparison, I just want to know who people would want coming to the plate in that given scenario.

It's odd that the only two people on the site that engaged in the conversation in today's IGT will not answer a simple question that has no consequences.

Who would you want hitting in that situation?  It's really that simple.

Would depend on who's pitching, and who is due up next. If its nasty sinker/slider righty, give me Sal no matter what, if its a splits neutral type pitcher probably Vaughn. If Chourio was due up next, id weigh OBP more heavily, whereas if Ortiz was up next im probably going with Vaughn.

TL;DR, no clue.

LOL, pinch hit Sanchez. Kidding😁

I would have to go with Sal, he's been ok the past month. .250 avg.

Pot, meet kettle

No, it isn't.

1) How often does this scenario happen?  Extremely rare.  So why are you getting all bent about it?

B) Who is up next?  If it's one of their better LH hitters, then I go with the guy who is least likely to make an out because HRs are rare.  Vaughn has hit 1 HR in 66 PAs vs RHP this season, so I'm not counting on him to hit a HR.  Nor Frelick, because he's hit 2 HR in 164 PAs vs RHP this season.  But, if someone like Ortiz or Perkins is up next, then I might take more of a chance on that rare HR.

3) Who is available to PH?  If Yelich or Bauers or Turang is available to PH, the answer is neither.

In your rare instance that happens in a vacuum with no good LHH to pinch hit, Vaughn OBP vs RHP in 2026: .273

Frelick OBP vs RHP in 2026: .334

So, given that I can't count on either to hit a HR vs RHP, I go with the guy who is most likely to extend the inning, which is Frelick.

Now, go relax and have a cream soda, do something to chill out.

Down by 3 runs I think its pretty clear you go with Vaughn due to HR pop that Frelick doesn't have.   If its down by 1 run, then I think its where it becomes debatable and probably what the spirit of the question is getting at imo.

Vaughn has career .830 OPS with bases loaded and two outs (24 PA) source

Frelick has career .321 OPS with bases loaded and two outs (13 PA) source

Vaughn has .686 career OPS in ‘high leverage’ situations compared to Frelick’s .652 OPS. Sal has higher OBP

Vaughn is better in 9th inning and ‘late and close’ situations compared to Sal’s career numbers

I’ll take Vaughn in 2026 in most situations

Conclusion: Frelick should be sent to Nashville to work on things 🙂
