  1. Looks like the Fresh Prince won't be pitching for the Men in Black (& Orange) next year. Leaving the Wild Wild West for Atlanta should provide ample opportunity to get jiggy wit it, as it were. I guess after six years he's finally earned his own personal Independence Day, so can't really fault his choice & can only wish him well in his Pursuit of Happyness.
  2. I'm hinting towards believing that I wouldn't entirely discount the Brewers (or any other organization) from trying to do whatever they can to gain a competitive edge & that Fiers hasn't been here since the current regime took over so he wouldn't have any first hand insight into what they may or may not be doing. Looking at the 2016/2017 Astros it looks like their massive improvement in K% was primarily driven by a change in personnel & playing time... Among players with at least 100 PAs, you have Colby Rasmus (417 PAs, 29.0 K%), Jason Castro (376 PAs, 32.7 K%), Luis Valbuena (342 PAs, 23.7 K%), Carlos Gomez (323 PAs, 31.0 K%), Tyler White (276 PAs, 23.6 K%), Tony Kemp (136 PAs, 19.9 K%) & Teoscar Hernandez (112 PAs, 25.0 K%) in 2016 being replaced by... Carlos Beltran (509 PAs, 20.0 K%), Brian McCann (399 PAs, 19.2 K%) & Nori Aoki (224 PAs, 12.9 K%) along with Alex Bregman (15.5 K%) & Yuli Gurriel (11.1 K%) combining for 1,190 PAs in 2017 vs only 350 PAs in 2016. League average K% at home in 2017 was 21.3 vs 22.0 on the road for a 0.7% difference. Astros K% at home in 2017 was 16.7 vs 17.9 on the road for a 1.2% difference, so it's not like they had some crazy split compared to the league as a whole.
  3. Maybe the Brewers weren't doing it when Fiers was here & Melvin was GM. Fiers was traded before Stearns was hired though, so he likely wouldn't have any knowledge of anything covert going on since then.
  4. Crazy to think of how bad our defense was....Weeks at 2b, Fielder at 1b. Remember all those times we justified Fielder's D by saying "he's surprisingly nimble for a guy his size!?" At least he played 1b. I had a running bet with a friend that I lost....I bet him that one time Fielder would whiff on a routine throw from an infielder, having it bounce off his face. Then throw Braun in there at 3rd....might have been the worst third baseman in the history of baseball. Jack Z really didn't give a lick about defense, did he In 2007 we had Braun (-32/-28.5), Weeks (-10/-2.4) & Fielder (-15/-8.1) combine for -57 DRS & -39 UZR, or around 4-6 wins losses. Pitchers probably prayed every ball was hit to Hardy (+9 DRS/+12.8 UZR). JJ ranks favorably by the advanced metrics coming in at 7th in DRS (+88) & 2nd in UZR (+94.5) since they've been tracked, 2002/2003.
  5. There are 44 second basemen with at least 5,000 innings over the last 20 years. Scooter ranks 34th in DRS (-14) & 36th in UZR (-14.6). Weeks ranks 44th in DRS (-112!!) with Daniel Murphy (-83) & Dan Uggla (-69) next worse & also last in UZR (-45.8). Rickie has been thee worst 2B of the last 20 years, so I hope that is a bar Keston can clear.
  6. Yeah, I'm 41 (born 1978) & have always felt too young for Gen X & too old for the Millenials. Like when I watched Singles or Reality Bites I was too young to really identify with any of the characters, but I also didn't even have email until I got to college so I didn't really grow up on a computer. I like to think of people caught in between like myself as Generation Why?
  7. This is exactly where I am at. Also still trying to figure out why the original had the weird Pepsi seam instead of actual seams in the first place.
  8. The olds complaining about the kids these days were once the kids these days that the now dead olds used to complain about & the kids these days will one day be the olds that the as of yet unborn kids these days will be complaining about someday (if we make it that long). I personally don't see how making negative generalizations about large swaths of people based on the year they were born is any better or less divisive than doing the same thing based on race, gender, or any other number of things people have no control over...but maybe I'm a weirdo.
  9. Arcia & Iglesias will probably cost a relatively cheap 6-7 million combined & you get both a high floor with Jose (1.5+ WAR each of last five seasons) & the possibility of maybe some magic with Orlando.
  10. Here's what the lineup tool at Baseball Musings thought our best & worst lineups would have been in 2019... https://bit.ly/32doolO The main takeaway is that the difference between our best & 30th best lineup, in their estimation, would have been about .014 runs per game, or 1 run every 72 games, if you prefer. As long as we don't bat the pitcher leadoff with Hiura & Yelich 8th/9th, the difference is miniscule.
  11. Hader will probably make around 5 million in Arby's this year. His salary will maybe go to 18 million in 3 or 4 years if he remains healthy & elite. Any team in MLB can sign Drew Pomeranz just as easily (if not more easily since many contenders have more money than us) as we can. QTC, Clayton Andrews & Angel Perdomo are extreme long shots to provide significant MLB value in 2020. Suter is fun.
  12. Also, one large second half defecit overcome, on the road, against a likely WC playoff team. So far they've won 2 games they should have won, lost 2 games they should have won & won 1 game they should have lost. They could be 5-0, should be 4-1 & actually are 3-2. After 5 games I still see high 50 wins & the 1/2 seed in our future. Toronto on the back to back should be fun.
  13. The only SS that played above Brice on the ladder this year were... Devin Hairston, Luis Aviles, Bruce Caldwell, Jake Hager & Saladino. Turang's numbers (especially considering age & scouting reports) are in a whole other dimension as those guys. I guess you could make a case for Eduardo Garcia but he's 17 & yet to play stateside.
  14. Agreed. He essentially had the same year in 2019 as he had in 2018, except now he is one year older. I’d be fine with something around 3/50. There is considerable risk, no doubt, but no other catcher offers remotely similar reward.
  15. I’m guessing the overwhelming majority of baseball fans will not even notice the changes to the ball in glove itself. I never noticed the original had the Pepsi seam instead of actual seams until it was pointed out & now kind of wonder why it never had actual seams in the first place.
  16. The Astros had the 4th best bullpen in MLB by runs allowed based WAR over the course of 555 innings during the 162 game regular season, that is far more telling than their results over the last 22 innings / 7 games. I mean Verlander went 0-2 with a 5.73 ERA in the World Series, were his shortcomings made abundantly clear?
  17. I don't think any of Lindor, Seager, Hader or Lux get moved this offseason because they are all incredibly valuable assets & teams are largely risk averse. That said... The reason the Dodgers would hypothetically want to replace Seager with Lindor is because, while both are elite talents, Francisco's projection brings more certainty given Corey's injury history. The reason the Brewers would possibly be interested in Seager is because we've gotten thee worst SS production in MLB over the last two years. I think the Brewers would rather just spend money for Didi or Iglesias to address SS rather than surrendering assets to try & fix it, but if they feel they can approximate Hader's production with some combination of Knebel returning &/or signing Pomeranz or another FA reliever, & the Dodgers want to sacrifice some of their coveted depth for near term gains, then who knows?
  18. Yeah, I feel like it was pretty clear Yelich was the best hitter in the NL this year, even with the missed time. 580 PAs @ 174 wRC+ > 660 PAs @ 162 wRC+ Agree that being the best hitter in the league will only be enough to get him second or third in the MVP voting given all the other factors that get consideration there, defense, team record, narrative, etc
  19. Agree 100%. Really hope the Nats can hold on so it doesn't matter. Rendon just got some Badger Mutual Insurance Runs, so that helps.
  20. My first impression, too. Would prefer just the updated (nice observations, Eye Black) ball & glove without the circle & text, but it seems like that is the direction MLB is heading. NBA has a bunch of teams with the name-in-circle-around-logo format also. NFL has none though.
  21. Something built around Hader for Seager seems to add up more than something built around Hader for Lux, in this internet commenter's opinion.
  22. My argument against that is that it wasn't "the best relief pitcher on a good team" award. Never thought I'd say this, but a relief pitcher playing for the Milwaukee Brewers probably has a larger national audience and greater following than one playing in big market San Diego. It has to be something like that, because solely based on stats, Yates should have gotten it. Yup. From what I could find it appears as though the award is voted on by a panel of eight ex-MLB relievers... Mariano Rivera, Trevor Hoffman, Dennis Eckersley, Rollie Fingers, Bruce Sutter, Lee Smith, John Franco and Billy Wagner. I'm guessing the eight of them aren't looking too closely at things like fWAR, bWAR, ERA-, FIP- or Win Probability Added.
  23. Over the last two years we have gotten an MLB worst -1.2 fWAR out of SS, second worst is PIT at +1.4 fWAR. Shaw at 3B & Pina at C likely project for more value than Arcia does at SS next year so I would be pretty surprised if Stearns considers it any less of a priority. Also, with regards to Iglesias, in 2018 he hit for an 89 wRC+ & came in at 2.5 fWAR/2.2 bWAR. He signed for one year, 2.5 million. This year he hit for an 84 wRC+ & came in at 1.6 fWAR/1.5 bWAR. I'll take the under on him getting two years & 10-12 million.
  24. Average MLB pace for pitchers in 2019 was 24.9 seconds. Instituting a 20 second pitch clock like they have in the minors would cut about 24-25 minutes off of every game. Just. Like. That.
  25. Two years, sixty four million buckaroos.
