Greatest Catch in Team's 50 Year History

Just watching the 1982 Harvey Wallbangers Highlight DVD (like I do every spring), and I saw the Oglivie catch in the corner during the last game of season against the Orioles. I tried to think of a, not only better catch, but also a more meaningful catch. I came up empty on both accounts.

 

I really don't know how he made that catch. Most do not even attempt to catch it because of how close it was to the wall and the the slide into it is an injury waiting to happen. Also, if he doesn't make that catch, the bases clear and the Brewers possibly or even probably lose that game. Although incomprehendable to me, 1982 could have turned from a crown jewel in the franchise's 50 year history to another 2014 and 2017 ultra collapse.

 

Cain had a few big ones to save games, but the Oglivie one meant more and was still more difficult, IMO. I'm partly drawing a blank for other catches, but it's tough to beat Spider-Man's catch.

It wasn't very meaningful, other than I was stoked to have this kid on the team, but when I think of great catches I always think of Dave Krynzel robbing this homerun:

 

 

He started in right center field and legit robbed a homerun over the left centerfield wall. He had so far to go he was barely even in the camera's view when it cut to tracking the ball in the outfield. Unbelievable.

Can't find video to confirm the awesomeness I remember, but I always think of Gabe Kapler's leaping catch into the stands to rob a home run.

There’s a great Yount one that I cannot find. Hit in front of him he’s sprinting off the crack of the bat and makes the diving catch fully extended. I’m sure many remember it, thanks in advance if anyone manages to find it.

I would.probably say the Yount catch since it is the team's only no hitter with Gomez robbing Votto second and Jeffress Matrix like catch against the Twins 3rd.

The Yount/Nieves catch was really memorable, but I wouldn't call it "greatest" as in "most difficult". I almost (almost) feel like Yount hot-dogged it with the dive a little bit, maybe, perhaps, possibly. It was a really good catch, but I've definitely seen guys make harder, greater catches. Just the context of that play really makes it stand out in Brewers history.

I remember Yount even admitted in an interview on ESPN that he didn't need to dive for the ball.

Well he stated that it was about being most meaningful not necessarily best. A big catch late in the game that saved the only no hitter in the franchise history is pretty meaningful.

REALLY tough call. IMO Oglivies catch was more important team wise, while Yount/Nieves was more important singularly (Nieves).

The Yount catch is #1. It is the most memorable catch in the teams history. As someone who certainly wasn’t around to watch the early 80s I have never heard about or seen Oglivi’s catch until this thread. However, I have seen and heard about the no hitter catch a trillion times (thank you weather delays).

 

The other two catches I am fond of are the Cain rookie year catch where he donated his body to chain link fence and the Gomez Tal’s hill catch. Tal’s hill catch is a personal favorite.

It was the most memorable but I agree he should have just kept running. Not taking anything away as I jumped through the ceiling when he caught it.

I haven't seen the catch in a long time (I don't know if I've seen a replay of it since it was shown on the day it happened), so I don't remember if it's as great as I recall, but Brady Clark had a crazy catch at Coors Field going back in center field. That one was jaw-dropping. Does anyone else remember that catch?

I can't debate some of these catches I can't remember, but I will have to look them up. The one that comes to mind right away was Cain robbing the, what would have been game tying home run in the bottom of the 7th, at Coors. We still ended up losing the game, so I don't know if it makes it as big, but at the time it 2-0 Brewers and we were in the thick of a playoff chase. That felt huge when it happened! I remember going crazy.

Can't find on the internet but I always liked the catch made by Bill Hall in the play were Corey Koskie got injured, that is a play I always remember.
