Grade the Deadline

Likely his 40%+ K rate is the culprit.

There are very few secrets anymore w/regards to player evaluation. I was expecting/hoping Hiura was involved as a trade piece over the last couple days, thinking some organization would lend a blind eye to the obvious flaws & see value somewhere in the analytics. Guess not.

Hiura needs to play DH about everyday in August. Tell him that ahead of time so that the man can get comfortable and will not be yanked for three or four games ( OR SENT DOWN AGAIN INEXCUSABLY). Give him at bats and Bat him 8th.

Also, he is not a great pinch hit candidate and he cannot play a position well. Make him the DH. Give him time. Put less pressure on him by batting him late. If he cannot produce this month with this treatment, send him down forever or just cut him.

Also, if he can put up his same numbers (.805 OPS, .350 OBP) and strike out the same rate, I’ll take it gladly. He’ll be a top 5 hitter on this team.

Late to the discussion.  This will probably be lengthy.

I would give the grade a B-.  I'm thinking Stearns believes that Rogers could be 90% of Hader.  So, he picked up two good prospects and a flier on Lament for Hader.  I do think it is funny how I come to the board and people want Hader to be traded.  When he is traded, then it is a horrible decision.  Maybe it is time for Devin Williams to put his big boy pants on.  He is good enough to be a closer.  If he performs like he has recently (without hitting large metal objects with his hand), it might be a push for the closer role.

I understand the acquiring a boat load full of arms.  However, what good is keeping the opponent to three runs or less when they cannot generate three or more runs consistently?  Is Counsel willing to try and manufacture runs?  Nope.  So a constant bat or two would have been nice.  I don't think Stearns should cater to the fans, but miniscule OPS and OBP rarely equates to success.

On another topic -- I hope Hiura does well... I really do.  If he does not perform for the rest of the year, it might be best to cut bait.

I was going to reduce my grade because they still had 3 catchers on the roster, and at least they could have improved the roster by waiving Severino.  Now I don't have to.

Everyone who thought Lamet was a key piece should now reduce their grade.

Grade-F+

Jorge Lopez got 4 prospects for his 1 single good season as a RP. At least 2 are "lottery ticket" types.

We took on money to help SD with their payroll to remain below a luxury tax. While that allowed them to add not only Soto but Bell.  By that account. 1+seasons of Hader+$5-12mil= RP rental(7mil+roster spot)  2 not top 100 prospects. Gave away value on lost comp if kept Hader.  How do we not get another lotto prospect? Or come away with one of the higher prospects used for Soto?

Bush-Kelly. Is the trade at least makes sense and why the plus exists.

Rosenthal-Peters is a joke of a trade. A not played in baseball due to injury and recovery should never see any player you selected in past 3 drafts.  Send the guy who's going to force you to add to 40man for rule 5 protection this offseason. Worse Peters excelled enough for AA promotion. Just robbed.

Failed to add a bat. Bell was a linked to having interest? Who went to the Padres whom you bailed out with payroll constraints. That team is vastly, significantly better to beat you in the playoffs than you are. Soto and Hader can be traded or kept for comps when lost. Nobody you acquired will you be giving a QO to or trading for some return on your investment of prospects.

I see an Epic collapse about to happen this team actually missing the Playoffs.

Being kind, I’ll say a D. Rosenthal hasn’t pitched this season and will…sometime. Rogers is a downgrade from Hader and the return for Hader was…not great.

Ruiz has been thrown out twice tonight trying to steal bases for Nashville after going 60-69 prior to joining the Brewers organization

What are the odds?

If we assume that his 60 for 69 attempts is his true ability, the probability of two CS  is about 1.7%.   Or if you want odds, 59-1 odds.

How many World Series titles did those two mortgaging the future moves get us? I know it got the Royals two appearances and one title but the Brewers? Not so much.

Well...the bigger part of that was trading Odorizzi for James Shields and Wade Davis. So I guess you could say the Royals went all in themselves. Not sure what other big moves they made outside of that.

It's really great having a website like brewerfanatic.com because without the posts here I NEVER would have known you have to make the playoffs to win the World Series.  That really got me thinking that Nashville will never win a World Series while they don't have a major league team.  There you go, I'm smarter than I used to be. You have to have a major league team to win a World Series (Poker and other sports aside),

Second, I learned that the playoffs are just a crapshoot.  I used to watch the games to see the outcome, but I've missed the crapshoot they do every series to determine the winner.  Can someone share when and what channel the crapshoot is televised or do you need to be part of a special secret society?  Is the crapshoot run by the Templers? The Freemasons?

Not sure how the "multi quote" works.  Wanted to respond to this and the post wondering if it was sarcastic.

Click the + next to Quote, scroll down and do it again for the second post you want to quote, then scroll to the reply window below the last post. Both posts should already be quoted in the window.

Can we add an enjoy/not enjoy filter so people can choose the experience they'd like to share with others during this stretch of multi-year Brewer playoff appearances?

Probably have to go with a D at this point.   Obviously it's only been two days so hopefully these Ps at least do ok and help out to make this not be as bad as it looks right now.

If that's true then you have to accept the all in approach leads to all out for years to come.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

The Minor League Report suggests one was razor close & the other was a missed call … so apparently - Ruiz is still lightning fast

I have been meaning to reply to this as I wasn't happy about giving up Kelly but maybe I should wait a few days to cool down after this series for a grade. Oof.

I'm considering downgrading the C+ I gave them to a "What The Hell, Man".

I think the crapshoot is what's ran in the back alley of the city and put on by the Peaky Blinders, or Newsies, whichever are available at crapshoot time.

LOL.

Melvin mentioned that the best time to trade a pitcher (especially a relief pitcher) is at the trade deadline. Every playoff hopeful team needs more pitching. During the winter there are multiple guys available to sign that lessons the trade value. So if we were going to trade Hader it made sense to do so either this year or next.

I'm not thrilled with the return but that was probably the best deal available. If a team is in the playoff hunt and wants to pick up an $11M closer they are not going to trade a major league bat. I think the trade was because the front office thinks we will be in playoff contention next year and may have a better team (and a better chance of winning in October). That would make trading Hader next July a harder pill to swallow. Also less years of control will get us less back in return.

Looking at what SD gave up I'm glad we didn't trade for Bell. It would have cost too much to overbid them. There weren't many other hitters that were significant enough upgrades that seemed to be available. Hopefully some are available this offseason for trades or free agents.
