This is a good decision

Wiemer was given plenty of opportunities to work out his hitting woes

Hopefully he’ll address all the movement in his batting stance before next season or he’ll be a distant memory soon enough - a talented player with terrible mechanics

The minor league coaches have to take responsibility for not addressing this issue in his first few years

Wiemer’s current approach will never play in MLB

Given the technical changes needed, if you'd like him to work and develop and his recent lack of game time, I wonder if there's a remote possibility of the AFL for Wiemer

Not likely by any stretch, but a possibility if you're looking for him to be in a better position technically to start next season

Good news. Perkins got pulled after his first AB in Nashville last night so I figured he tweaked something, but guess they just wanted to get him on a plane ASAP.

Wiemer switching to a version of his current set up is what triggered his prospect ascent in the first place.

Before that he was a guy with all the physical tools that hit too many ground balls to tap into his raw power.

At this point it looks like changes will need to be made, but Joey posted an 848 OPS as recently as June.

There was no need to fix it earlier because it was working up until the last couple months.

Wiemer will fix it and become a 30-30 guy, so long as he avoids major injuries. And I believe he'll also be on the 2023 post-season roster as our preferred CF with a late lead.

Optioning him now gives us an extra year of control (just like how we optioned Turang mid-season), while also giving him a chance to potentially never be optioned again (if he fixes his swing by March 2024).

Isn't it 3 weeks? Turang was down 23 days and there are only 15 days left in the MLB season.

The season is 187, subtract the next 15 days and the day to start the year would get him slightly below 172 needed.

Well that's a nice added bonus.

This is good to know … I had forgotten this benefit to the Brewers

Hopefully, he addresses his batting issues that have worked prior to the big league club (& even in Milwaukee for a short while) so he can return & be part of our bright future

He could also be part of a trade to bring back a 3B or 1B this offseason … since we have several quality OF in addition to Wiemer

Like so many other Brewers fans, I like his personality & appreciate his talent

I want him to do well & would love for that to be in a Brewers uniform

Really hope we spend real $$ on a first baseman this offseason. Even Santana might be okay, but the age is a little scary.

As to trading from our surplus OF, I’m mentally prepared for 6 months of stories about it, but no actual move. Not gonna pay cash for someone else to take Yelich. Mitchell’s probably considered our best CF defender. Frelick is a hitting machine, future leadoff man and decent defender. We’d fear we’re selling low after Wiemer’s hitting struggles. Even Taylor’s not expensive and decent in many ways. And somebody usually gets hurt. There’s zero pressure to start Chourio’s clock. Perkins is an an optionable depth piece…

We have a great problem … quality major-league OF depth

It will be interesting to see how the Brewers treat this luxury & if a trade would bring back starting pitching or potential corner infielders

Yeah, Brewers needed all that depth & more this year, don’t see them moving anyone from the OF group unless someone really blows them away.

Despite hitting for just a 97 wRC+ as a group, Brewers OF have still posted 7.9 WAR (11th in MLB) on the strength of being +12.8 runs on each of defense and the bases.

Seasonal plate appearance breakdown to date is Yelich (509), Wiemer (408), Taylor (202), Frelick (171), Anderson (133), Perkins (131), Canha (81), Mitchell (60), Tapia (57), Miller (21), Winker (2)

Really good hitting coaches would look at him for about 30 seconds and say either you make changes or you'll never reach your potential. It didn't take a baseball savant to see his mechanics and know that wasn't going to work.

That Wiemer had by far the second most plate appearances speaks volumes about the patchwork job and little that Counsell had to work with in the OF this year, primarily due to injury.

Yelich, (hopefully a healthy) Mitchell, and Frelick should be the OF next year with Taylor and either Perkins or Canha as the backups with Wiemer, Chourio at AAA.  My guess is that Canha is back as the primary 1B next year.

The issue is no one knows what Mitchell is.  Can he come back?  Even if he can, what is he?  Brewerfan usually goes into fits about strikeouts. Well Mitchell's K-rate is 40%. His offense is all his .468 BABIP.

That's on only 130 PA's, so it's still a small sample.  You're correct in that no one knows yet.  His K rate in the minors is 26% and he was pushed fairly aggressively (AA in his first full season, majors in his second full season).  He was only drafted three years ago, and no minor league season and minimal college season in 2020.

But that's why you have Wiemer and Chourio at AAA next year.

This was as calculated as sending Hardy down to get another year of control.

Not surprising at all.

I agree with most others. He's completely lost at the plate, and it needed to be done.

My gut still thinks Wiemer will be involved in a trade during the off-season. Possibly at the winter meetings.? 🤷‍♂️

Except, I mean, he's been really really bad. It's completely justified.
