From the moment I saw MLBtr's projected 2/$36 contract, Hoskins became the #1 guy I wanted the Brewers to target. This is a great fit for the Brewers, and the opt out makes a ton of sense for him.

Putting a RH bat like this in the middle of our LH-heavy lineup should really help, and he doesn't block anyone, as we didn't have a real 1B option on the roster.

In a dream scenario, we'd add a Soler or Martinez for DH, but realistically DH will be used to keep our OFs in the lineup and rested.

Let's see what other moves are coming, but right now I'd say the Brewers should be the odds-on favorite to win the division.

So hopefully this means Black is our OD 3B now... Really liking our lineup now with adding the thunder bat of Rhys!

I was hoping to see this here! I was going to request it if it wasn't.

I guess we can cross out trade any of burnes, adames, and Williams off the off season to do list.  Now really excited to see what this team can do!

The Mlbtr writeup mentioned Philly thought Hoskins would be ready for the WS roster if they made it. So I would think he's more than ready come OD.  You look at his defense stats on BRef, 2 seasons at 1b over 1200 innings They give him -1 and +1/+3 runs both.  2 seasons under 850 innings. -7/-7 (855)  -5/-20 (334)

Smaller sample sizes grade low. Larger more average.  He graded at MLB avg for range or slightly higher every season. Better than Tellez' time as a Brewer.

The bat has a +16-17 run avg per season which is is 4-5games worth every season. In the Brewers lineup and how well it fills what they need, thinking +6 wins offensively.  Which is like 9 wins with 1b performance last season.  This all just depends that his ACL doesn't remove this ability he had priority to it.

It's a small sample size but Hoskins has absolutely been a beast in Miller/AAF.  .342/.405/.790 5 HR in 9 games

What a crazy Wisconsin sports day. Brewers sign Hoskins, Bucks fire Griffin, Packers just fired Joe Berry (and Jaire Alexander posted a thank you to Green Bay assuming he is going to be traded).

So happy to be wrong on this one...I gave it a 1% chance and I thought that was being generous.

A couple of thoughts:

1. This is probably the reason we haven't been in on Santana, this was probably in the works for a while.

2. I wish that opt out was not in the contract, but beggars can't be choosers!

3. It feels like Burnes, Adames and Williams just left the trade market.  Will be fun to have a true all in year, especially if we can add just one more big bat somehow!  Burnes and Adames will be playing for a contract, so hopefully they are on point all season!

4. This makes the Jake Bauers trade even more sucky.  Just giving guys away for nothing...

5. It's funny how one big signing (by our standards) can renew our hopes and dreams for a BIG season!

Yep, the chances of a Burnes/Adames trade this offseason just went from 5% to basically no chance in hell. They’re all in.

I'm curious why Philadelphia didn't offer a similar deal to him. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled to have him, but I just don't get it. Note, I'm not up to date with Philly's roster so I don't know if they decided they have a replacement already and felt he was expendable.

Is there a lineup thread somewhere and I missed it?

I'll be interested to see what Murphy does.  It all kinda hinges on where he puts Chourio.

My guess right now:

Frelick

Contreras

Yelich

Hoskins

Black

Adames

Chourio

Turang

Mitchell

That may be way off, idk.

I believe they're moving Harper to 1st and would probably prefer Schwarber in the DH spot instead of the OF

Bryce Harper moved to 1B and they already have Schwarber and Castellanos who are awful in the OF and will likely spend a lot of time at DH. So basically just nowhere for Hoskins to play unless you want Schwarber and Castellanos in the OF every day.

Great day indeed. I saw a few comments about this being an all in move. I disagree. They've made the present better which they've always done. We have a young team with a loaded farm system so there really isn't a need to sell to rebuild. Not Sacrificing the present for the future isn't the same as going all in.

Soooo......do we know yet if we will or won't be able to make a QO to Rhys after his first year?  I guess I don't know how that works with an opt-out.  It would be HUGE if we can at least get a comp pick after year 1 if he does indeed choose to opt out - which I think we are all expecting him to do if he does stay healthy and put up good numbers this season.

I think that "all in" comments are in reference to keeping Burnes and Adames, even though their contracts are up after this season...By not trading them, it feels like we are all in on one last run with them!

Aren’t we obligated to bat Adames 3 or 4? Or, was that just a Counsell thing? 🙂

That would be managerial misconduct given the guys they have now.

Adding Hoskins really helps this lineup - as people have noted. I'm guessing the DH will rotate between the extra outfielders (especially Yelich) and maybe Black and Contreras on occasion. Yelich at DH will help the OF defense (the foursome of Mitchell, Wiemer, Chourio, Frelick would make one of the best defensive OFs in baseball).

Our offense could, potentially, be so much better in 2024. So much depends on the young guys - Chourio, Black, Mitchell, Frelick, Wiemer, Turang. I mean, a big chunk of these guys need to step up this year. Let's hope it happens.
