New year, new MLB misc news thread.

New Orioles owners finally?

Looks like Angelos family is cashing out the tune of 1.725 Billion Dollars.

Sale needs to be approved at the upcoming owners meetings, and sounds like it might be more of a gradual transfer for tax purposes, but maybe now they’ll start locking up and adding to their young core.

Yeah, I suppose better late than never. Adley-Henderson should have been locked already, extending them now is going to cost a fortune— but worth it.

The Orioles with a spending owner are a frightening team moving-forward.

Congrats to Bobby Whitt Jr…….happy for the Royals

This is why you extend Chourio before he has his 6 WAR breakout season.

I assume the Royals plan to get that investment back in taxpayer dollars for their new stadium.

Adam McCalvy on the IL for a few months with a sudden, serious eye problem. Had surgery, said he'll be ok, but it will take time.

If you haven't been to Kaufman Field yet go now, it's old and small but awesome. Worth the 10 hour drive. Friendly fans, awesome bbq tailgating, WW1 museum. Lots of cool stuff!

This is quite the kick to the balls after they went all-in on Burnes in an effort to build a World Series-caliber rotation. I know other pitchers have tried to pitch through UCL tears in the past, but it rarely ends without the dreaded TJ surgery and extended absence/rehab that goes along with it.

I haven't been to a ton of stadiums...but that is honestly #1 by far of the ones that I have gone to. Doesn't feel old, tailgating, concourses are fairly nice, great seats, affordable, incredible food, the fountains, and the outfield area for kids etc. is stellar.

It is like everything you could want in a stadium.

Time to start speculating what the Brewers need to pony up in terms of prospect capital to trade for Burnes at the deadline for a two month stretch run rental after the Orioles are stuck in a "step back" sort of season in that division.

Negro League Museum too.  Tons of great BBQ.   I did a random trip to KC for the first time last year, thought it was a underrated city and worth going for everyone.

Was going to note Brewers do play there in early May, pretty sure its a M-W though.

Rule change but not a rule change on obstruction.

https://theathletic.com/5279087/2024/02/15/mlb-obstruction-rule-enforcement-explainer/?source=user_shared_article

A quick overview of this.  If a player blocks a base then the player is awarded the base and if they are advancing they are rewarded the base they are advancing to.  So no more leg blocking a base as that is now ruled or was already as obstruction.  Umpires will be calling this during the season.

I'm not sure how I feel about the rule enforcement. My worry though are the close calls. Plays like the clip are super obvious but if a ball gets thrown to the runner side of the base, there could be an unintentional obstruction of the runner. Will that be called? So many plays are bang bang with hands and feet flying everywhere.

I believe it is the blocking of the base.  So dropping to a knee and placing your leg in front of the base.  If a fielder does this then it will be considered obstruction.  If the ball is going towards the runner side of the base that wouldn't be obstruction.

This is what MLB wants to stop.

If the infielders leg is blocking the base then that is obstruction.

From the article:

Quote

That rule – 6.01 (h) – specifically defines “obstruction” this way: “Obstruction is the act of a fielder who, while not in possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding the ball, impedes the progress of any runner.”

So when an infielder blocks a runner’s path to a base with his foot or his whole leg, that’s clearly “obstruction.” And umpires will be instructed to no longer allow it.

So if the ball is going towards the runners path that would be in the act of fielding the ball so it wouldn't be obstruction.  MLB has specifically called out the knee drop and the infielders leg blocking the base.  This is what umpires have been instructed to watch for and to call as obstruction.

Good, I never liked it in conjunction with other rules in place and felt that made it unfair, ie rules protecting the fielders and not being allowed to block home plate.

Remember what Yoda said:

This seems good, it is some serious BS when a runner can’t get to a base because there is a body part in the way.

I look forward to a couple of months of this being enforced maddeningly inconsistently.

Yeah MLB umpires are like instructions not clear call everyone safe for obstruction on non obvious calls and everyone out on obvious obstruction calls.
