Orioles Acquire Corbin Burnes for INF Joey Ortiz, LHP DL Hall and 2024 Competitive Balance Pick

Posted

Where is Ortiz going to play? Is he a 3rd baseman on our current roster or a 2nd baseman? Or does this mean Willy is getting traded soon. There is a lot to unpack here.

Ortiz seems like what we want Turang to be.  Good defensive player who actually can hit.  Not going to be a homer guy, but a doubles hitter mainly.  Almost like taking Frelick's bat with Turang's D.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

If the Brewers kept Burnes all year - we would have gotten a comp pick.

Getting the comp pick a year early, but losing a season of Burnes for Hall/ortiz. That's really the trade off.

Don't know if the trade deadline value is higher - could have a more desperate team, but then only paying for a few months. Burnes was leaving in 2024 just not sure what month.

Time will tell. Could be a good value, or could be a waste of a season.

With his defense he sounds like a shortstop all the way.

One reason for Ortiz's age was he was a college player - and thus didn't reach pro ball until he was 21. He then missed all of 2020 due to the COVID stuff. And then most of the next season due to injury. So he's a bit behind most players - developmentally.

I agree but I would be shocked if Willy moved off of SS.

I think Ortiz can pretty much play anywhere in the IF. May be 2B or 3B. Maybe SS (if we deal Adamas). I think he profiles as a better hitter than Turang - but we shall see.

Maybe the team will take things to camp and play those that step up between Black, Turang and Ortiz.

Turang has a wRC+ projection of 80 and Ortiz of 85. They are basically the same player.

A 25 year old who’s still in the minor leagues doesn’t strike me as a likely prospect.

Just glad most scouts disagree

Corbin Burnes looked like a complete bust and wasn't allowed to start games in the majors until his breakout at 25.

All year: If the Brewers don't trade Burnes it's an embarrassment

Brewers trade Burnes for a fair return: This is all they're getting??

lol, I think a lot of people had unrealistic expectations on a possible Burnes return. We'll see how this goes, I'm just surprised they decided to do it so late in the offseason right after plugging their biggest hole on the roster.

Let's see what happens next! Adames trade? Free agent pitcher signing? Nothing?

Don't think I ever saw ONE person say if they don't trade Burnes it's an "embarrassment." In fact, I think most people said hold until a team meets your asking price.

And THEN they went out and got one of the top hitters on the market. A player the Giants, among other teams, were trying to sign. They shored up their lineup! And then it looked as though they would comp...-and they traded Burnes for a very underwhelming *return.

Also...can we please not act like there was just ONE opinion on trading Burnes like the fanbase is monolithic? Not everyone blindly defends them and not everyone begs for a player to be signed and then complains they didn't pay more and sign him for more years. There's a happy medium. And not liking a trade doesn't mean you had "unrealistic" expectations.

The only way this trade makes sense is if Ortiz is going to be the starting shortstop opening day and Adames brings in a couple more prospects. If so I'm sure an infield of Contreas Black Ortiz Turang and Hoskins will be exciting at least. Frelick Mitchell Chourio in the outfield with Yelich dh is nice. Bullpen should be good. Just gotta get some starting pitching.

Amazing to me how many people thought we were just going to get a king's ransom for one year of Burnes. That ship sailed a year or two ago.

Generally, they love the deal for Baltimore since they are getting an ace - which they need. And they love that they didn't give up any premium prospects. Ortiz is blocked and Hall was probably bound for the bullpen.

For Milwaukee, it's a mixed review. They don't dislike the players - just that it's not really doing much for the team - especially in 2024. And especially after signing Hoskins, which most everyone thinks signaled were 'all in' for 2024 and planning on running back Burnes and Adamas and so forth. We are worse for the move - Baltimore is better - and didn't have to lose a player like Mayo to make the move.

lol, fair, there were definitely people frustrated with them not trading him, but I can't say if they're the same ones complaining now or not. 🫡

Well, I was comparing scouting reports and MILB results.  Even if they only hit that this year... we have both for several more.

That’s a bit slanted……one guy said he wouldn’t be surprised if Hall was an All Star in 2024.

The deal is fair, and if the Brewers were a 75 win team it would make perfect sense to do it.  But taking 4.5 wins from a 85-88 win team for guys who may not make it to their second arbitration year doesn't make much sense.

The grades the Brewers got were B, B, C+ and B-.

Doesn't mean there are nice things about the deal. As I noted, they don't dislike the players. Lots of potential. Just that Baltimore did great.

Orioles got A, A, A, and A.

But taking 4.5 wins from a 85-88 win team

ZiPS is currently showing Ortiz (1.8 WAR), Hall (1.1 WAR) and Burnes (4.4 WAR) on their FG player pages.

Isn’t that more like 1.5 wins?
