A quick Wes Clarke update. 0-2 with 2 Ks today. In 26 spring ABs he has 13 Ks. Some quick math tells me…

Thinking Think GIF by Rodney Dangerfield

…that’s a 50% K rate, which is not good.

Good news is he does have 4 bombs and an OPS of 1.027.

Saw an interview with Murphy after today’s game…..apparently another ball fell in front of Chourio that irked Pat……” This is the major leagues….that ball has to be caught”

Might not be word for word but that was the gist.

Chourio seems to be singled out publicly for every mistake he makes by Murphy and he's the only one who seems to get that treatment. I remember after Dunn's 2 error game earlier this Spring Murphy brushed it off and complimented Dunn.

My take on the "Chourio not making the catch" thing is this:  (please note that I have no actual knowledge of whether or not this is true.  It is merely conjecture.)  I kind of feel he has been playing carefully out in the outfield so as not to risk an injury in a meaningless spring training game.  Perhaps, he's even been "coached" a bit (maybe by a teammate or member of the coaching staff?) to not risk a serious injury in spring training.

I can understand how the kid probably feels.  He has immense pressure on his just-turned twenty-year old body to be the team's present and long-term future superstar.  If he dives in a meaningless spring training game and separates his shoulder, for instance, wowzers that would be slightly devastating in the short term and could be something that bothers him his entire career.

Once Opening Day hits, I would expect that, assuming he makes the Opening Day roster, that he will flip the switch and play balls-to-the-wall in most situations.  An injury similar to what I described above would still be devastating but I would be quite forgiving because it happened in the regular season when the games actually matter.  Injuries happen--it's a fact of life.  If a player, who is now financially set for life, feels that he should not risk the huge investment by the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club in a meaningless spring training game, I don't blame him one bit.

Of course, if he was battling for a roster spot and was just some ordinary minor league player with a decent (or worse) prospect rating, yeah, then I could see it as a slight problem that he's not out on the field making plays and trying to improve his chances of making the big club.  But he's not.  He's the #2 prospect in all of baseball.  And that merits, in my mind, a bit of caution to make sure he can actually play in meaningful baseball games.

Okay, there's my thoughts.  Again, it's just an opinion.  You may disagree or feel otherwise, and that is totally fine.

I think this makes a lot of sense.  And it may just be Murphy joking around about Chourio not getting to the balls he should be getting to.  Murphy has a weird sense of humor.  He once told Thames he should have used his tennis racket after striking out for the third time in a game.  That is the type of humor that Murphy has so I wouldn't be surprised if Murphy is just joking around abut this.

I’m watching the game today……..Chourio just let a single get by him for an error…..runner ended up on 3rd. He’s playing right today..

Then with one out…..fly ball to shallow/medium right….runner tagged and stopped as he threw a strike to the plate.

ps Hall pitched out of it stranding runner at 3rd.

And now a throwing error that should never have been attempted. First real look for me and he has a lot of growing up to do on defense. Personally, I'd send him down for a bit.

That would be a pretty strange thing to joke about.  I think Murphy meant what he said.

Bubble wrap Yeli.

On Chourio, I think the contract really incentivizes you to let him work everything out in the majors. Unless he’s absolutely getting overwhelmed with major league pitching, which he hasn’t been (20% k rate), you let him figure things out in the big leagues.

Chourio is the worst defensive OF in the mix right now. I wouldn't hate if he was a part time DH.

I saw him quite a bit last year in Biloxi and he was fine defensively. I think he might just be pressing a bit with the managers attention on his D. He will get it turned around, he is a very good athlete.

Yes, he has a great arm and is a good athlete. The team has playoff aspirations and have really great OF options at the moment. He has been brutal when I have seen him this spring.

In Phoenix. My friend arrives this afternoon, so we are going to Surprise to see Angels-Royals at 6. It's the only night game. Then tomorrow Cubs-Rockies at 1, Brewers-Giants at 6. Friday we haven't decided, then ending it with Brewers-Cubs on Saturday. Can't wait!

Regarding Friday's TBD, I want to go to a park I haven't seen, so the park choices are Angels, Giants, A's, Mariners. Any advice?

Tempe is a pain to get out of after 4pm.  Heavy traffic on the 101, 202 and 10 around that time.  Anytime before that and you should be fine.

I would go with the Giants or the Mariners.  The Angels spring training facility is the worst.

Also this weekend is the air show at Luke Air Force base.
