I keep forgetting we should have Miley back soon. I guess he would be the 6th starter when he is back.

I wouldnt mind Grienke if someone gets injured, I wouldn't think it would take more than 2 million after Clevinger signed for 3. He is also close to 3k k's so that adds a bit to getting him.

The issue early can’t have our starters on go 4 innings

Agree, it is early and with 3 days off early, I get letting the bullpen soak up some but it is worrisome. I wonder if we are going to be strict on Junis only going through the lineup 2 times. The Giants did that at some point last year and he was better but if he only goes 4 innings every time it will eat into the pen quickly. Being cautious with Ross and Hall early makes sense but hopefully can get pitch count up in a start or two.

Look at Grienke's numbers the past 2 years.  He's done.

Why not just piggyback Junis with someone else?  He doesn't have to start games, he could come in in the 5th or 6th...  I mean, if all he can do is 4 innings every start, we need to plan for that, and a good plan is NOT to have the bullpen pitch 5 innings every time the guy is starting...

Not sure what the answer is, but I don't get paid to figure such things out.  The bullpen is going to be overworked from opening day until the final game of the season if we don't come up with some kind of plan for our starting pitching.  That won't end well.

Junis only went 4 because they were being careful of his "scratchy" shoulder. Presumably they will let him go longer in subsequent outings (assuming the shoulder is fine).

He wasn't great last year but in 2022 he had a 3.68 ERA. Last year we had to go to Julio Teheran who had a era over 5 in AAA and hadn't been good for like 4 years. I wouldn't think Greinke would be a full time all year answer, just as a vet bridge for 5-8 starts and he could get his 3k k's. There isn't much left at this point on the free agent market and anyone we could get in a trade would be a fringe roster player anyway.

Judging by the comment of another poster in another thread, since none of the other teams in MLB have signed him, there must be a reason.  I guess that means that any player not signed yet is completely useless.  Maybe the White Sox will add him too?

Greinke is 40 years old and has been leaking oil for 3-4 years. Hard pass.

  • Jesús G. Luzardo is a pitcher the Brewers should be looking at.

I wouldn't be against trading for him at the deadline he is for sure the type of pitcher we need and have the prospects for. I wonder if a similar package as Cease got would work?

Black, CRod, Weimer/Mitchell is a package close to what Cease was traded for. It seems like a lot but we could get by and still have a strong farm system.

The hits just keep coming…Miley done for Tommy John surgery & Junis to the bullpen upon return (maybe).

Who are the guys at AAA with opt out possibilities?  Is a guy like Chad Kuhl with the WhiteSox an upgrade? Sounds like his wife’s cancer treatment played greatly into his struggles last year.

Zach Davies could be another guy with the Royals ,stats looked ugly last year with a 7.00 ERA , high whip, but FIP was 4.58

I for one am keenly looking forward to seeing what 7-10 starts a piece look like for Gasser and Myers. If Junis does indeed come back to the bullpen, perhaps they can stretch him out slowly if need be.

Its really a bummer about Rodriguez so far this year. Would have loved to see him take that next step and be available for spot starts. He still may yet.

Sure, but they just keep finding guys. Tobias Myers? He looked REALLY good. Gasser and Ashby on their ways back.

I think they'll need to address it, but I still like how this team is built.

Desperation is about to set in...

Time to do some wheeling and dealing I'm afraid.

I think we might be ok provided no new starter injuries. Off-day Thursday so we can get back to 5 rest days when Gasser joins the rotation in 8 or so days as the sixth starter. Both he and Wilson should be fully stretched well before Memorial Day.

Just need to gut it out a few more weeks.

If the Astros keep stinking I would love to make a move for Christian Javier or Frambar Valdez. Javier has an affordable contract through 27' and Valdez has 1 more arby year. My guess is both would cost 3ish prospects, maybe 1 higher end for Javier. Jesus Luzardo is still the only obvious proven top of the rotation at this point.

Erick Fedde has looked good for the White Sox...

Fedde would be great, the White Sox have been so bad maybe even an early season deal is possible with his value up. Would something like EBJ and a lower value pitcher (like James Meeker) be to much to give up for him for 6 good starts.

I'm not a GM, or don't have a connection to the Astros GM, but there is not a chance in hell the Astros are going to go into sell mode.  They will right the ship and be a factor before all is said and done.

I agree they shouldn't sell off but they are at a bit of a crossroad. Currently their salary is around 230 million, Bregman and Verlander are free agents and Tucker, Valdez, Pressley (option),and Urquidy in 2 years. They can afford to keep a couple but then will still likely be paying their bats a massive amount compared to the starting pitchers (pen makes a lot with Hader, Montero, Graveman, and Pressly). I don't think they would sell the farm but at some point the Astros will have some hard financial questions to solve. If they continue to have pitching issues (injuries) and end up under .500 and are paying Abreu, McCullers, Hader, and Pressley large amounts for little production. Add on top of that one of the worst farm systems in the league and they will be forced to do something sooner rather than later.

What about sending an OF to KC? They currently have an OF of Melendez (.195/.275/.677) Isbal (.211/.250/.592), Renfroe (.149/.213/.483) and Velasquez (.222/.292/.638) and could really use an upgrade or two. Obviously I am looking at a trade when Mitchell and Yeli get healthy, By then Weimer will have hopefully regained some value and net a top Royals prospect, they could also use 2B/3B help IE Miller or Monesario. Could be a solid win/win.

I think it's going to take more than a few months of Wiemer hitting at AAA to restore any trade value... can't imagine he has that much value at this point being 25 and his MLB production to date.

As much as I'm pulling for the kid.... he looks lost and there isn't much to hang your hat on right now, I don't think it's gonna be a quick fix.

Injuries/40 man forced the Brewers hand with bringing him up.... he really needs extended time at AAA to see if he can figure it out.
