The question that remains is how the heck was he allowed to play in the all-star game?

That's my question. I read in the JS that he experienced a flareup leading up to the all-star break. How is the heck does he not know better than to play in a meaningless game when he not only knows he has a troublesome back but also was experiencing a flareup? That's on him.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Is it possible there’s an incentive in Yelich’s contract about playing in the All-Star game? That used to be pretty common, but mostly it was for *making* the All-Star game.

Rosenthal weighs in

The Milwaukee Brewers got good news Thursday when Christian Yelichchose rest and rehabilitation rather than season-ending back surgery. But Yelich is on the injured list and what he might contribute the rest of the season is in question. So, the Brewers are seeking a left-handed hitter in addition to starting pitching, according to sources briefed on their plans.

Yelich leads the National League in batting average and on-base percentage. The Brewers obviously cannot replace him. But from the left side, they’re down to Brice Turang, Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell and Jake Bauers, along with Blake Perkins, a switch-hitter. Another left-handed hitting option, corner infielder Tyler Black, is at Triple A.

Maybe he watches re-broadcasts of all the games & learned how important the ASG was from the Leverings, Andersons & Minnaerts of the world.

Sitting may not have made much difference but yeah, it bothers me, too.

IIRC there were cases where a player was incentivized (read: paid) to stay home from an ASG. I wouldn't be surprised if that is now discouraged in MLB. If that's the case & Yelich played based on that, shame on him AND the team.

I'm fine with them checking the market, but I really don't think it necessarily needs to be a LHH.

If they don't find a trade partner it could mean another go-round for Black, since Yelich was DHing & that's a position Black fields really, really well.

I don't think that it would be a good look for the Brewers to discourage him from playing.  The league wants to make sure that the best players are showcased.  That's why the league gives the day before off and 2-3 days after off.  Discouraging him would be frowned upon by the league and by the players.  Milwaukee has tried very hard to create a positive impression with the players, because they know they can't win the payroll game, and restricting a player's choice would hurt that impression.

Yelich may have realized that with his ongoing injury issues this might be his last opportunity to play in an All-Star game.  If so, I can't blame him.

If it didn't flare up now, it would flare up a month or two from now.  An extra day's rest wouldn't have mattered that much.  Better now and get rest/rehab and have a chance to be ready for the playoffs than have it flare up in September or October and be done for the year.

Let's update the load management scorecard according to Brewerfan.

Yelich: played the ASG when he should have sat. Bad.

Chourio: sat too much earlier this season. Bad.

Contreras: didn't sit enough, ruined him. Bad.

People are fooling themselves if they really think Yelich playing in 5 innings of the ASG is the problem here. It sucks he's hurt. Scapegoating doesn't change anything.

I mean I don't know how you couldn't raise questions when it was already reportedly flaring up around the time of the all-star break.....

Did the all-star game do anything to make it worse? Obviously, we don't know the answer to that, but it interfered with what otherwise would have been a full six day rest period, and he subsequently had to sit for back rest a mere one game into the second half. It's not scapegoating; it's raising reasonable questions about our best player participating in a meaningless exhibition game in the midst of a flareup of a chronic back issue when other guys have sat out for less.

Nothing's going to change at this point, but it is worth asking I believe.

I agree 100%, The Monday Morning Quarterback view is not legit.  I'm sure this will be happening on and off the rest of his career.  Lets just hope it is minor and he can be back in a month or two for the playoffs.  Also I was very surprised at how well Jessie Winker is playing this year.

5 days, not 6. He played the Sunday before the break and the Saturday after, then was given Sunday off. So he played 5 innings of fairly uneventful baseball (hitting into two groundouts and making one defensive play on a base hit to right field) sandwiched between 4 off days.

I think he played because he felt well enough to play, just like he played after the break up until he didn't feel well enough to play. It feels to me like it got worse in that 2nd Cubs game when he was removed from the game in the 8th inning.

I get Yelich's back issue is a big deal but pro athletes play through their aches and pains until it gets to a point where they just can't anymore. I think that has to apply to Yelich just like anyone else. He can have a sore back that he can play through, there's no known timeframe to take time off for rest so that it doesn't get worse, it could easily go as long as a typical trip to the IL anyway or longer. At least playing through it until he can't lets everyone know for sure that he has to shut it down so you're not playing the "what if" game. That's how I feel about it anyway. I'm sure there's room for disagreement there.

Yeah. I agree there's some nuance here as back issues are notoriously unpredictable. And he very well may have felt good enough to play at that time. I guess I just would've preferred that he played it safe and used the full rest period given his history and importance to the team. I would've had no issues with him playing if he was feeling normal.

I get it but at the same time if he wasn't playing baseball he'd very likely be doing something else. That's 5 days off in the middle of the season, very precious time for a baseball player. He'd be traveling or visiting friends and family and still working his body even if it's off the field. It'd be really hard to ask him to just stay in bed for 5 days and not strain himself.

Expected a minimum 6 week stint for Hudson with past oblique injuries.  Big if it's more like 3.

JB Bukauskas back to Nashville on his rehab assignment.
