Edman already had a $9.5M salary on the books for 2025, so $64.5M in new money over the additional four years (before all the accounting tricks).

I think they somehow retroactively pay him $64M of that new money based on his 2024 postseason contributions and then have him count like ~$2.5M per year the next 5 against the luxury tax.

A 5 year contract for a utility man that rounds up to 9 figures in guaranteed money...because, the Dodgers.

Edman is a “utility man”, sure, but his 16.0 WAR since debuting in 2019 is 47th in MLB over that stretch.

Even discounting 2019 with the juiced ball he’s still at 3.3 WAR/600 PAs for the rest of his career.

If he can maintain that pace over the next five years, heck even if he just notches 10 WAR. he’ll still be a steal for the Dodgers even before the deferrals push down his CBT hit.

The only reason it's a steal now is teams like the Dodgers overpaid so much for other players in the past.

I dunno, the first player that popped to mind as a comp for me was somebody that signed with a small market…

Edman (2578 PAs)
263/317/408 (99 wRC+)
59 HR | 112 SB / 17 CS
6.3 BB% | 16.6 K%
+24.0 BSR | +49.1 DEF

LoCain 2013-17 (2672 PAs)
291/345/423 (108 wRC+)
49 HR | 110 SB / 24 CS
6.8 BB% | 18.3 K%
+20.7 BSR | +55.1 DEF

Pretty close across the board. Lorenzo was a better hitter entering FA but Edman is two years younger, can play SS/2B in addition to CF, and still didn’t beat the 5/80 Cain got all the way back in 2018.

He hasn't maintained that pace the last 2 years 1.5 war

Not sure where you're pulling your numbers from, but I was looking at FanGraphs who have him pegged for 2.4 WAR over 528 PAs in 2023 and another 0.9 WAR last year in only 153 PAs after missing the first four plus months on account of injury.

Or...were you using Baseball Reference? 2.1 WAR in '22, .9 in '23. 3.0 WAR, 1.5 WAR pace.

Your Math was alright if you're using BRef...not if you're using Fangraphs. I'm not sure if one is more reliable, but Edman's been trending pretty strongly in the wrong direction whereas Cain was not.

Cain was a GG CFer still playing at a very high level, Edman was a poor fielder last year with little power, didn't walk and hit for a poor average...

The Dodgers also spent a billion dollars last year and are spending quite a bit again this year, so if we're talking about who drove up the prices in free agency, I'm not sure using the biggest FA contract the Brewers have ever signed is...really an accurate representation of why/how Tommy Edman's value became as inflated as it has.

This is more like the Chris Taylor signing...but even there, Taylor had played better more recently than Edman.

But, that's life as a small market team. Juan Soto is lining up a 500-600M(hell, maybe larger) contract and we've got Chourio locked up, hopefully we'll follow suit with Pratt and Made after they follow Chourio's performance.

I'd hold off for a while on both guys. Made didn't even make low A yet. Far too many guys have looked great in Rk ball and fizzled out badly as the pitching gets better when they move up. Pratt struggled in Appleton in a limited amount of time. Let things play out more until offering millions to both those guys.

If things progress as they are currently, both will likely be offered extentions at some point ahead. Made could take the Chourio path and be our OD 3B in ‘27 with a 8-10 year contract.

The Mets signed Montas 2/34 and the Cubs signed Matthew Boyd 2/29. That is crazy money for 2 guys that have had major injury issue, and neither have been very effective (Boyd made 8 solid starts last year). If that value holds firm I kind of am more inclined to trade Civale, Civale has been way better than either the past 2 years, is younger, cheaper, and more durable. I thought we would only get a player like Barrios that we gave up but the value of those two deals gives Civale like a 8-10 million surplus value which is nearly a top 100 prospect.

MLB looking to add a Golden AB.  With this golden AB a team could switch a hitter with anyone who isn’t on the bases already.  Basically a pinch hitter but anyone can be the pinch hitter.  This would be a one time use only.

So for example if the bases are loaded and Turang is up and Chourio is the next batter you could have Chourio bat twice in one inning.

This is a somewhat dumb idea.  But I like it for extra inning games.  I would rather see a shootout style select 4 batters and you get 9 outs to get as many runs as possible with the home team deciding if they want to bat first or last.  If no runs are scored it goes to a walk off choose 3 hitters and only 1 hitter can be from the previous 4 selected.  In the walk off there are only 3 outs and strike outs count as 2 outs and walks are 2 bases.  Team with the most runs wins the walk off.  Home team always bats last in the walk off.

I'm holding off plenty.

Literally nobody is saying hand out tens of millions to Made or Pratt right now.

AFTER they become one of, if not the top prospect(s) in the game and before we call them up(which would be following Chourio's performance and once or even immediately before they're set to get promoted) they are guys I'd like to sign. It's obviously dependent upon them actually becoming those types of players.

I thought Montas would be a nice guy to bring back on...2/15 maybe. He throws in the upper 90s, obviously the Brewers liked him and probably thought they could get more out of him, but 17M over 2 years? Insane.

@Team Canada...that's the most absurd idea I think I've heard discussed.

If you did do that...I'd imagine Soto's value would go up significantly. Bases loaded, big spot, he may be the player I want up more than anyone else in the game.

A guy like that should absolutely take that kind of contract. Odds of him getting traded to a contender at some point is relatively high.
