33-year-old lefty Kyle Freeland takes the mound for Colorado. Freeland owns the worst ERA among starting pitchers in baseball this season, and his home/road splits are similar. On a brighter note, he limits walks and generates a strong chase rate.

Shane Drohan starts for Milwaukee. Drohan’s 2.78 FIP is #20 in MLB (min: 30 IP).

Miz going 7 again a nice help for the pen. And of course Hamilton showing some level of power again is very nice. His career high is 8HR, so he always had more power than he was showing the first 2 months. I'd love to see a break down on his approach the last few weeks. He seems to be balancing taking some better swings to do some damage while still being willing to slap it around and use his speed.

Freeland is someone we’ve heard of, anyways. I couldn’t name a single Rocky before Friday’s game.

Would like to get Chourio going again. It’s only two games removed from his two homer game in the last game of the Giants series, but 0-10 since, including in some big spots. I wonder if he fell in love with trying to swing for the fences - kinda human nature. We need his power, but I rather him be a tough out first.

Team has done a nice job of getting the bullpen rested up. Between Miz/Harrison length and the piggybacking even Ashby is rested. About to get tougher heading into All Star break so nice to have pen in a strong position.

Yes, nice to have more than a one run lead going into the late innings.

We have the 3rd best record in baseball.

Yet if the season ended today, we’d host the Padres for a series at AmFam in the Wild Card round and if they simply won a short 3 game series from us, our season would be over.

Baseball’s playoff format sucks.

Agreed.

I know folks are unimpressed by division titles these days, but that's always the number one goal for me.

I imagine it's a Drohan-Patrick day, with Uribe and Megill and maybe Ashby around for leverage.

Division title for sure, but really you need to make moves with being a top 2 seed in mind. Don’t want to be the 3rd division winner. Just makes such a big difference in your WS odds to not have to go through the extra crapshoot round.

Maybe a good time to give Yelich a day off.

I was thinking that too. Give Contreras the whole day off and let Vaughn be DH with Bauers at 1B.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Perkins in the starting lineup today.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Hitting a couple HRs Thursday, then going into Coors.........I think you nailed it. If we could only inject a little bit of the Bauers approach into him. We need to be reminded sometimes how young he is; once the better approach kicks in, look out.

I would love for MLB to go with A) The division winners & one WC or B) two WCs that play each other in either a winner-take-all to advance or a best of three. That to me would be best, but there's no sense railing about it because it'll never happen. $$$$$$$$.

The question is who is more likely to be caught Braves or Dodgers?

Yeah, I was going to say the odds of that happening were next to none because the NL Central is easily the best division in the league, if not all MLB and the Braves and Dodgers would cruise to the two best records, but now I'm not so sure now that the Cubs are slumping bad and the Reds are now an unmitigated disaster, so there is hope for a first round bye.

Once they felt they could expand the ncaa tournament to 76 teams which may have been the most perfect tournament in sports history they’ve pretty much ruined anything that has to do with sports and competition.    Nothing is sacred and at some point people are just not going to care as much.    Or care about it in a different way

I’d say the clear goal should be the #1 seed.  If we don’t get that, we’ll need to likely win a best of 3 WC series, and then beat BOTH Atlanta and Los Angeles.

with the 1 seed, we only need to beat a WC team in a best of 5 divisional round and then either LA or ATL.   We might get lucky and ATL beats LA.

I think last year proved how important the 1 seed is, not just the bye.  Given how hot the Phillies were at the end, I’m pretty confident LA would have eliminated us in the divisional round last year

I can’t tell you how much I hated playing the cubs last year.    Hated it.  Thank god we won.   What would have been the point of last year if you lost the playoffs to a rival division team you finished a billion games ahead of

Same actually. I am curious about Sal, he took that pitch to the foot last night and looked like it didn't feel great. Toughed out the game but I wouldn't be surprised if he woke up today feeling it.  Against the lefty maybe he gets a day off and Perkins plays but if Contreras is going to catch then Bauers will be in RF I would assume. If Bill sits then Vaughn/Bauers can DH and maybe Perk is given his bat back if we want Yeli to chill as well.
