All these extensions could be the brewers thinking there will be a lot less years of control after the new cba.  It may be less about getting a good deal and more about ensuring 6-8 years of cost controlled players they have high confidence will be at least an average starter.

It's possible but I doubt there would be an agreement to reduce years of control without more shared revenue. I think they just want to have some cost certainty going into an uncertain time.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

A lot to think about. Unlike Pratt I'm not sure what is left to prove in AAA - I imagine this contract and 40 man spot comes with MLB playing time. There is plenty of at bats for him to take against LHP from Sal and Mitchell.

I cannot believe it’s about an extension….but ok. Seems odd to sit a week to get an extension de midseason.

The way Lara is playing right now, I don't think there's much more up side (contract-wise), this year, anyway.  I'd bet he and his agent realize that now is probably the time.  He can't play much better, and any regression hurts his position.

His defense is elite. The hit tool is plus. Even at his absolute floor, the WAR and surplus value he’ll provide over the life of this contract easily exceeds the total cost. I’m incredibly stoked on this signing

This would be fine if all he becomes is a 4th outfielder. Even if you don't like the player a ton, this is great

Nice!  I'd bet the "incentives/escalators" are what took so long to hammer out.

Will wait for final word and I know the Brewers aren't the first team to do this ... but they may be changing baseball right now with whom they are targeting.

Bazillions of dollars handed out to guys like Bichette and Bregman and Swanson and (insert 200 names here) only to have them underwhelm. There are so few guarantees anymore with even the stars that they will consistently produce.

If you are going to 'waste' money on guys... why not take a chance on your own? This goes beyond the Made and Chourio and top prospects that are on a rocketship to stardom ... but your "Tier 2" stars - Fringe Top 50 and low Top 100 guys. Be selective but aggressive to lock them up. Hit on a couple, break even with a couple. The couple you miss on it will be so much easier to cut bait or have a tradeable contract so you are not stuck paying a fortune for someone you can't move.

This. 100 times this.

If the 8 yrs ~30m is even in the ballpark, it's hard to see how this could turn out badly. There is a chance, sure, that he'll not be a major leaguer at all. But it's pretty slim. Projection systems (Unclear exactly how up to date the projections are) for this year has two outliers; ZiPS (71 wRC+) and ATC (101 wRC+). OOPSY, The Bat and Steamer are between 82 and 91. (Keep in mind, this is just for this, age 21 season) With his defense and baserunning, even the low end of this isn't a terrible outcome. Of course, that would be disappointing, but you're weighing that risk against the possibility of a lot more. If he's a league average hitter, this is a steal. Kevin Kiermaier had a 95 wRC+, Lorenzo Cain and PCA are at 103 wRC+, JBJ 82 wRC+, Billy Hamilton (21st centurý edition) had a 66 wRC+. To give some context as far as glove-first CFs in that range of offensive output goes. And none of them put up the kind of offensive numbers in AAA that Lara did at that age. Only one close was JBJ, at 25, when he already had MLB experience.

Passan says the deal maxes out at 10 years for $79 million. This is absolutely absurd for the Brewers.

If he gets this we'll be absolutely thrilled.

Does this feel like it is happening so much recently because the owners know the length of contracts will be changed as part of the new CBA?

What an awesome deal, wonder if made gets a contract this summer too 🤣
