That logic makes no sense. You are comparing a 21 year old being motivated after an extension versus a 31 year old past his prime. Lara is motivated to be the best he can be whether this contract has $1 of escalators of $100mil because he will be a max of like 31 years old at the end of it anyway. He is playing for another big contract either way.

I don’t think anyone lets off the gas because their contract is $10mil instead of $10mil plus another $5mil in incentives. If they have that thought process they probably wouldn’t have made it past varsity in high school.

1) Value extraction. If you are going to spend $79mil on a player without the guarantee of performance do you give $79mil cleanly to someone without clause or do you give $30mil to someone that can escalate to $79mil based on performance? Doesn't matter 21yo or 31yo - one of those contracts requires a player to work harder for it than the other in a vacuum.

2) We aren't talking $10mil -> $15mil .. we are talking $30mil -> $79mil.

deal seems more favorable to the brewers than the pratt deal. mostly a reflection of prospect value at this stage im sure.

so numbers wise….I’ll guess 7 years at 35 million….with an option at 12

Got close…

Love the deal. Low risk at 7/31 and the reward could be massive. Especially with the uncertainty of the new CBA these moves are great. Would love to lock up Made for something similar to Chourio's deal.

Payne is now a prime trade candidate methinks.

Solid deal which I am happy with. To be fair, this makes total sense for Lara though, too.

There’s no real value in the initial 7 years for the Brewers even though the AAV looks great — it’s still unlikely that Lara would exceed them — unless of course, there’s concerns of a loss of control in the new CBA which is a valid thought.

The real value is those three options years. Hard to say how they’re structured but it looks like an AAV of 16M per year. While that doesn’t sound cheap, that’s probably 4th outfielder money by 2033. And if he’s not even that, the Brewers just cut their losses. No real downside at all for the Brewers and little downside for Lara.

Lists the going Free Agent rate for bench players at 6.5 million per WAR.

Blake Perkins currently has 3.4 WAR.

So roughly speaking Perkins has produced 22 million in value for the Crew and that is probably about the worst case scenario for Lara at this stage, so yes this is a fantastic deal given the breakout he has had on offense this year.

I don't think this impacts Payne in the least bit. Payne is a long, 6'2 lefty with a lot of projection left, hitting for power, drawing walks, did I mention hitting for power, great speed, better plate discipline...

I love Lara and think he could be an outstanding CFer, but Payne's got a much higher ceiling(lower floor also) but... why give up on him now? I mean, it'd be one thing if you waited until after this year when I think he'll be the Brewers biggest riser and he's being valued as a top 50 prospect, but... I'd much rather see him get some time in AA and see if he's our RFer of the future.

Chourio/Lara/Payne?

Payne MAY end up the best of those 3. Probably not going to take any bets on that, but he has as much upside as anyone in our system outside of Made and Pena IMO.

I will take the Made extension however.

Outside of Yelich, will we have more long-term guaranteed money committed to the Nashville Sounds roster than Milwaukee? 🙂

Lets see if we can't add Biloxi to that list soon!

Adamczewski is also coming, and just lighting up A+ pitching.  To me, this is the kid to watch.  Man, what to do with all this talent.  I'm putting Mitchell on the block if he makes it through a full season healthy.

Those are some damn good names.  Especially at that contract with plus speed and plus defense at a premium position.

Honestly, this is a wining deal for the Brewers. Even if Lara struggles in MLB, it doesn't really set the team back. Also at worst in Milwaukee he will be a solid defensive late inning replacement. I think he will much better than that. but at about 4.5 million per year, this is a risk worth taking for the Brewers.

I would be hoping to deal either Sal or Mitchell don't trade Adamczewski or Payne

Frelick is quickly eroding whatever trade value he has. Mitchell due to his injury history and remaining team control has limited trade value to begin with.

I figured the value wouldn't be great. I am just saying those are the guys I'd prefer to move to make space. Sal probably still has a good bit of face value across the league. Preller has always loved him if I recall correctly.
