Sproat is turning a corner...

Things are looking up for that young man!

The Miz, Harrison, Woodruff, and Sproat is a good looking top 4 if this continues.  Hopefully, Henderson comes back strong to fill out the rotation...

1.2 IP in back-to-back days is something for Patrick.  Very effective tonight.  Wonder if he makes the transition from kind-of-a long reliever to another Ashby rubber arm.

I really think this is a big turning point game for Sproat. This is the one where it’s kind of either “okay I really think he’s figured something out” or “it maybe was just a couple nice games.”

Sort of in-between the two, right? What impressed me the most about Sproat is that he endured through an outing where things didn't always come easy. The command wasn't what it was his last time out, and he had to work through the ridiculous number of foul balls & the resulting high pitch count. Maybe scaling those obstacles & making it through 5.1 innings was another box checked off in his development. A few of his earlier outings, I don't think overcomes what he did tonite.

He works after only one day off yesterday, then goes again tonite. And like you said, great results. Have to admit I'm shocked. Really nice to see.

I'll still take this version of Koenig in the pen but it was a bit disheartening to see his velo down a couple ticks below his season average today and his spin rate down about 200rpm across the board.

Looked to me like he was leaning on the changeup today, possibly as an equalizer to his not throwing in the upper 90s anymore. And it WAS a good changeup. We'll just have to wait to see where the velo settles in I guess, but after throwing an inning then a couple days off yeah I'd have liked to see the gun glowing a little brighter too.

I'm crossing my fingers this can be the Sproat we get moving forward. 5 innings plus of decent to good pitching.

The season really settled and 'advanced' this spring when Drohan and Patrick moved to the pen and provided so much coverage that we were not extending all of the other arms back there.

With Henderson coming back to the rotation, if Sproat can consistently just give us innings and be a relatively reliable 5th starter ... Drohan to the pen should give us so much more coverage that we can utilize everyone else in the roles they are needed and not have to have days where "I guess it is Anderson and Kuhnel and a handful of hope tonight..."

I think this was his best "pitching" of the season. Obviously not as dominant as his last start but facing the same team two starts in a row and running into some trouble early then completely flipping the gameplan and putting together a really solid start is just so impressive. First time through the order he threw his two breaking balls 13% of the time. Second time through the order he upped that to 39%! Just completely flipped the gameplan on it's head. I thought that backdoor sweeper to Bleday to end his day was the best pitch he's thrown all season.

has never been a favorite of mine. To me he comes off as the cool kid who wants everyone to see that he gets to hang out with ex-major-leaguers.

If Ohtani was with the Brewers he'd know every player on the team, what they had for lunch, favorite color, pets............

BTW For anyone not aware, Rengifo was signed by the Padres. Not currently active though.

I heard that on the radio after work tonight and I thought maybe I was just stupid, but yeah......

Me: I really need to watch the game tonight. Brandon Sproat is pitching.

Spouse: Oh, is he their best pitcher?

Me: No, no. He’s like their fifth-best pitcher.

Spouse: Then why are you so eager to watch him?

Me: There’s a real chance that he’s turning a corner to possibly becoming their fourth-best pitcher.

Spouse: Get help.

Difficult pitching match up tonight as Abbott has improved as the season has gone on and de la Cruz looks really good right now but I think we will just have enough to beat them again

If Sproat is mostly over that mental barrier and is going to generally go 5 or 6 innings along with Woodruff being back things definitely start to come together. The team is uniquely equipped in my opinion to have a number of guys at the backend of the bullpen who can all give 1-2 innings fairly often and from time to time go more if needed. Free the manager from the perceived need to have a long man to dump hopeless innings on and focus on getting guys a mixture of rest and regular work.

has sproat's spin rate/advanced metrics improved in this stretch where he's pitched much better?

He simply needs to fill the zone.  His pitches move so much, that it seems like he is still finding his release point.  It is almost like Ashby -- when he finds the correct release point(s), he is unhittable.

His Cruyff turn was outstanding.

Have not heard that term since my boys were in Soccer 30 years ago.
