Oh! A one year $16 million deal with a TEAM option for $16 million for next season. Am I reading this right?

That has to be a mutual option, right???

Interesting details here. Grandal's contract not merely one-year deal. It's one-year with a club option for 2020, with a buyout that increases guarantee to $18.25 million. So, Grandal will not be highest-paid #Brewers player in 2019. That goes to Ryan Braun at $18 million.

Yasmani Grandal's deal with the Milwaukee Brewers is actually a one-year deal that includes a mutual 2020 option, league sources tell ESPN. The deal has a $16 million base and $2.25 million buyout on a $16 million option.

Mutual options rarely, if ever, get exercised.

The #Brewers are actually paying Yasmani Grandal just $16 million this year but there’s a $16 million club option in 2020 or a $2.25 million buyout

STILL SOME CONFUSION

Let's wait a bit, there have been instances recently where the team option did end up being a mutual option. It does sound better already, but I want to see the official details.

So if all goes well it's a 2/$32 + award bonuses. If it goes poorly in 2019, it's the 1/$18.25 we expected.

I don't see how this is anything other than a great deal for the Brewers.

Edit: Passan and Rosenthal reporting it's a mutual option. So that's unlikely to be to actually be exercised by both sides so it's basically the original deal we thought it was.

Yeah there's no way or reason he would have taken a club option.

A mutual option makes more sense because it basically replicates a qualifying offer without the negative effects if he declines.

On a "Mutual Option", if the Team exercises the option and the player decline is the team still in the hook for the "buyout"?

Yes, I believe so

Source confirms: Grandal’s option with #Brewers is indeed a mutual option, as @JeffPassan said.

Even with the mutual option, it's still generally beneficial that the buyout is a 2020 item and not 2019. That $2 million could still not us a decent bounceback candidate or low end 2b option pending the market.

I'm shocked I tell you.

I'm really excited for his bat. Such a great annual candidate for "left handed hitter who comes to Miller Park and power numbers jump" (see: Shaw, Yelich, Lind, Thames, etc etc)

27, 22, 24 HR's the last 3 seasons hitting in Dodgers Stadium... we just added a 30HR bat at the catcher position hitting in Miller Park. Pretty awesome.

A .245/.345/.475 with 30 HRs isn't an unreasonable estimate if he stays healthy, correct? Let's gooo!

.790

.824

Yes please. Very excited about this add.

Might want to fix the title of the thread. Passan didn't confuse anyone - he was correct and the others are wrong (Haudricourt and Rosenthal have both sent corrected tweets to reflect "Mutual Option")...

I thought they were not on the hook if the player declined but the team did not.
