2019 Green Bay Packers draft preview and predictions

I'll do the following projections for the rest of the draft.

 

2-44 - TE-Irv Smith Jr./Alabama

3-75 - ILB-Germaine Pratt/North Carolina State

5-150 - OT-Tyler Roemer/San Diego State

6-185 - WR-David Sills V/West Virginia

6-194 - CB-Ka'dar Hollman/Toledo

7-226 - S-Zedrick Woods/Mississippi

Four of the first day one/day two picks for Gutekunst have posted really good 40 times.

 

Jaire Alexander = 4.38

Josh Jackson = 4.56 (the exception)

Oren Burks = 4.59

Rashan Gary = 4.58

Darnell Savage, Jr. = 4.36

 

I have to wonder if this will be a long-term trend for Gutekunst? It almost seemed like at the end of Thompson's reign that the Packers used the 3-cone drill as a primary evaluating tool with the big men.

 

I think so. They had been drafting some glacially slow guys in Ted's last few years. It was obvious that none of their linebackers could cover as evidenced by the endless line of tight ends running free down the seam.

Greedy Williams definitely fills a need. They have Alexander, aging Williams, and often injured King.

point taken, my thought was they used their 1st 2 picks last year on corners. I wouldn't be upset if they get Williams as you can never not have enough at corners, but eventually you need to address the other side of the ball and give ARod some help.

Maybe. But scheme alone will improve an already good offense. Plus new coaching staff may like what they see in the young WRs. Doesn't mean they shouldn't get a slot or TE, just not sure they see it as a big need.

I think my preference would be Risner, A. J. Brown, Samuel, Little, Lock, Campbell, in that order. Can probably grab one of Sternberger, Knox, or Oliver in the 3rd to shore up TE.

That's a really good list. Risner is an almost ideal scheme fit. I know they only have two picks today, but I'd love to see them come out of the day with an O-lineman, slot receiver, TE or ILB. There's a lot of talent at those positions left.

A coworker of mine is a huge Michigan fan, and he gave me some thoughts on Gary this morning:

 

He confirmed the Packers' take on his lack of production- he was often the focus of the offense's blocking scheme, and a big reason for why guys like Winovich were able to make plays. Regarding the Wonderlic, as noted, he's a 2x Academic All-Big Ten and a film rat who put in the work off the field to improve his game. He had no concerns about his ability to adapt to the NFL or a shift to LB if that's the plan.

 

This coworker is also a Vikings fan, so he's not saying that through Green-and-Gold colored glasses either. Take it FWIW.

I hope so, maybe it was the way Michigan utilized him that prevented him from fully maximizing his talents and Chase Winovich benefited from that. Either way, I wish the kid nothing but the best of luck and hope he has years of success in GB.

This isn’t particularly noteworthy, but it looks like Josh Jones changed his jersey no. to 24 (from 27). Still waiting on jerseys numbers for the two rookies. Ted used to get those numbers out fast.

Taking Gary at 12 is a head scratcher to me. I don’t like taking a guy that really didn’t play that well in college and expect him to be a difference maker at the next level. I don’t see Gary having much of a positive impact for us anytime soon and would of preferred to see the Packers take Sweat or trade down with who was available at that time.

 

Savage is a solid pick that should help from Day 1. I was a little higher on Nasir Adderley and was hoping he would be the safety we would target with the number 30 pick, but you can’t teach speed and the type of instincts that Savage possesses. Savage is a nice addition to pair with Adrian Amos.

This is an interesting look at Gary, who clearly had a decent level of production but never really matched the expectation.

I was all for picking Gary last night and was willing to take the gamble on greatness. But the more I've read this morning, the more I wish the Packers wouldn't have taken him.
