Esteury Ruiz is a legit prospect, but I also wonder if he's in danger of being flipped as part of another trade prior to tomorrow's deadline.

The SB numbers are eye-popping.

Not sure how he fits.

Edit:  I guess they think he can play CF.  RHH though.

Not shocked given how well Williams has been pitching as a set-up man & Hader's contract, but I need to hear from prospects people about the players we're bringing in, and what their ETA is to helping this team.

Pretty underwhelming return IMO. Some lightning in a bottle pieces I guess but nothing that I see as really enticing enough to have overwhelmed us. Looks like we just took the best offer on the table.

First Brewers trade in a long time where I'm not sure what to think.

Same here. It's like I feel completely neutral but know I shouldn't.

Scouting reports on Ruiz and Gasser from Baseball America (both ranked inside the Padres updated top ten):

8. Esteury Ruiz | OF

Track Record: Ruiz signed with the Royals for $100,000 and broke out when he won the 2017 Arizona League MVP award. The Padres acquired him in the middle of that season in the trade that sent Trevor Cahill and Brandon Maurer to Kansas City. Ruiz struggled with strikeouts and moved from second base to the outfield over three difficult seasons following the trade, but he re-emerged as a prospect at Double-A San Antonio in 2022.

Scouting Report: Ruiz is a sleek, athletic player with plenty of tools. He has surprising plus raw power for his frame and possesses elite instincts that make him a prolific basestealer despite average speed. Ruiz’s power-speed combination is enticing, but he long struggled to make contact with a long, uphill swing and poor strike-zone discipline. He overhauled his approach in 2022 and improved his pitch selection, cut down his chases and increased the number of pitches he was seeing, resulting in a rebound campaign. Ruiz is still learning to play center field after his hard hands made him unplayable in the infield. His reads and jumps are only fair but could improve with more experience. His arm is below-average.

The Future: Ruiz’s improved approach has made him an unexpected callup option. If his improvements hold, he may hit enough to play every day.

Scouting Grades: Hit: 45. Power: 55. Speed: 60. Fielding: 40. Arm: 45.

9. Robert Gasser | LHP

Track Record: A lefty with an 88-91 mph fastball in Houston’s bullpen in 2020, Gasser hit the weights hard during the coronavirus shutdown and returned in 2021 throwing harder to emerge as the Cougars’ staff ace. He logged a 2.63 ERA with 105 strikeouts in 85.2 innings to transform himself from a draft afterthought into a fast-riser, and the Padres drafted him 71st overall and signed him for $884,200. Gasser quickly moved to Low-A Lake Elsinore after signing and hit the ground running with a 1.20 ERA in 15 innings pitched.

Scouting Report: Gasser’s weight room gains improved his entire arsenal. His fastball now sits 90-93 mph with late run and can bump up to 95 when needed. His newly-sharpened slider is now an above-average pitch he can bury for swings and misses and he spots his average changeup well to give him a third quality offering. He is also developing a curveball, but it’s more of a show-me pitch at this point. Gasser’s best attribute is his plus control. He’s able to spot his four-seam fastball up in the zone and can put his secondary pitches where he needs to get swings and misses. His stuff further plays up with a pause in his delivery he devised to throw off hitters’ timing.

The Future: Without overwhelming velocity or an imposing stature, Gasser could be a No. 4 or No. 5 starter. Because he’s a polished lefty with pitchability, he’s also a fair bet to reach that ceiling. He is set to open the 2022 season at High-A Fort Wayne and could pitch his way to Double-A San Antonio.

Scouting Grades: Fastball: 50. Slider: 55. Curveball: 30. Changeup: 50. Control: 60.

Considering is 12.54 July ERA and 1 season and 2 months of control the haul was only going to be so large.

Yeah I'm definitely disappointed in the return. Rodgers is good but a rental. We save salary, gassers scouting report seems like a back end rotation guy. Lamet I recognize the name but he's not been good lately. Ruiz I'm not sure on.

All that said, hader has blown it twice in the post season now. I don't think he's the guy for that situation

Yes yes yes!!! I love that we're going full Tampa Bay Rays and not giving up on being competitive after 2024.

Small sample, but Hader hasn't been very good in the postseason. I don't think he will be missed as much as we may fear.

Yeah, I get that, I expected to be underwhelmed, I would have just rather hung onto him. They've dug their heels in on Hader the last couple seasons and refused to just take what they could get and now they finally gave in.

For me, Williams moves to closer and Rogers goes into the 8th. Lamet fits our guys that can pitch from the pen or start profile that we seem to like. Ruiz is interesting, worst case fills a gap at AAA but I think he could be a playoff add on the basis of his running alone. Gasser obviously has the interesting tools and whether or not he continues to develop probably determines the success or failure of this deal.

I was not one for holding on to him until his dead was done and we were not going to pay him so I see this as a deal that keeps us competitive short term while adding a couple interesting prospects long term.

So that happened. Wow.

I just saw that it happened and my first thought was they probably couldn't have traded him to a better team considering the quality of the Padres farm. I haven't even read the thread yet so I don't know who they got lol.

three of the four players are on major league contracts. the subtraction of josh hader puts the roster at 38, but the addition of three means another spot needs to be opened up on the 40-man.

taylor rogers appears to have two minor league options remaining, but has enough service time to refuse any minor league assignment.

dinelson lamet has two minor league options remaining entering spring training 2023. he has never been outrighted to the minor leagues. since 2 may, he has been sent on optional assignment twice, and has already spent at least 20 days on optional assignment this season.

esteury ruiz has three minor league options remaining. he has never been optioned or outrighted to the minor leagues.

Looks like a completely underwhelming return but I admit to not following the minors much at all. To not even get a top 6 prospect from San Diego is not great.
