Josh Hader Traded to the Padres

One other thing to keep in mind is the Brewers used Hader solely as the closer/9th inning role the past couple of years and my speculative reason is that it had something to do with a request from Hader and/or his agent. I'm curious to see if they go away from having a set closer/9th inning guy moving forward.

First Brewers trade in a long time where I'm not sure what to think.

Gasser sounds like Eric Lauer 2.0 - getting a lefty arm prospect who profiles as a starting pitcher with 6 full years of service time is pretty good value to start with.  Rodgers gives them back end depth whether he slides back in as closer or becomes a set-up guy for Williams.  Lamet has arm talent but I believe has also dealt with alot of injuries and inconsistency, and Ruiz is the wildcard.  Overall I think it's a decent return for a great reliever whose time was coming to an end as a Brewer one way or another before 2024.

I've long thought the Brewers would opt to make this sort of deal during next year's trade deadline, or just simply let Hader walk...his recent struggles aside, it's been a great ride watching him dominate as a Brewer.

Looks like a completely underwhelming return but I admit to not following the minors much at all. To not even get a top 6 prospect from San Diego is not great.

their system is very good. I will be interested to see where they slot into ours.

Good bye, Jonathan Davis

I guess I get it as a salary dump, but pretty underwhelmed, hopefully when all the shoes have dropped the Brewers will be a better team. Right now they are not as talented as they were yesterday.

I would have let Hader walk away for nothing after next year over taking this offer. Hopefully I can LOL at my comments years down the road...but I don't really like this trade even in the slightest at face value. Maybe I will feel better after looking at the prospects closer.

I’m underwhelmed. I don’t see any salary savings. What am I missing?

Aren't the Twins covering Rogers' salary this year?

Yea I was generally open to trading Hader. However, I expected the return to be overwhelming if it happened mid season, and likely to include a ready to help hitter in it.  So I'd lean towards the side that's a bit underwhelmed on it.  Basically the trade seems fine/fair, but to do it now I expected more. in order to downgrade for this year where they're almost for sure making the playoffs.   Essentially just saying I thought you'd get a similar return in the offseason.

But, I like they got a solid reliever to take his spot right now.   And it wouldn't surprise me if they think they can turn Lamet into a big help right now (if he's healthy, best I could tell in a few seconds of looking it up is that he is).   I'll wait to hear what others say on the prospects.

Yes yes yes!!! I love that we're going full Tampa Bay Rays and not giving up on being competitive after 2024.

I am sad to see Hader go, but a team that is confident in their ability to develop pitching should be willing to sell off current arms to build toward improving future value.

The savings are not even that great, considering Lamet is already making 5 million dollars, and will surely get a raise heading into 2023 and wouldn't be amongst their preferred 5 starters.

Except if the bullpen blows several games now, and they miss the post-season, then they'll be the chumps in Brewers history

Utterly surprising and there's no way around that. However, this is a typical Stearns move and one that we will need to remain competitive going forward, as resigning Hader was never an option. As we've seen when he's been unavailable at various points this year, Devin is more than capable of stepping into his shoes.

Will be interesting to see how Stearns pivots from here over the next 30 hours.

Gasser and Ruiz are legit prospects that will be top 10, if not top 5 in our system.

I expect the Brewers to make several more moves before the dust settles.

Gasser certainly top 10, Ruiz will depend on your scouting service of choice IMO.

*edit*

Honestly Gasser might be the top pitcher in the system now.

three of the four players are on major league contracts. the subtraction of josh hader puts the roster at 38, but the addition of three means another spot needs to be opened up on the 40-man.

taylor rogers appears to have two minor league options remaining, but has enough service time to refuse any minor league assignment.

dinelson lamet has two minor league options remaining entering spring training 2023. he has never been outrighted to the minor leagues. since 2 may, he has been sent on optional assignment twice, and has already spent at least 20 days on optional assignment this season.

estebury ruiz has three minor league options remaining. he has never been optioned or outrighted to the minor leagues.

Ruiz probably replaces Davis on the 40-man and on the active roster.

Either Davis is removed or Alex Jackson/Pedro Severino.  I think Jackson is probably the most likely candidate.  Hiura being traded is also a strong possibility.

As for the trade this wouldn't be accepted on the BTS.

Seems very underwhelming but I am guessing the Brewers are high on Gasser and Ruiz.

Trade one of the best relievers in baseball for a 31 year old reliever, a 30 year old failed prospect, and then two prospects outside of their top 5?

As we have seen, closers get paid big dollars and Williams is heading into arbitration. Therefore, I bet Rogers is the closer and Williams stays in his 8th inning role for now

That's not even the correct Ruiz! Esteury Ruiz is listed at 4.7 surplus value in their system.

This has the appearance of "Another trade is coming", but I don;t know how much surplus value they've created for themselves.

It definitely gives them more ammo for another move. You’re not trading Hader for Soto…but could a couple of these guys be flipped with a few of our own to put a package together for a Soto or a Reynolds now? We’ll find out soon…

If this was Lamet age 24 I'd be more excited.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Are you sure?  The other Ruiz is listed as a 2B at 4.7 unless they have the positions incorrect but it is impossible to tell which one is which.  Everything I have seen Esteury Ruiz is listed as an OF and not an INF.
