Brice Turang Hype

I probably need to temper my Rookie of Year, Golf Glove, long term core expectations on him but man has he impressed. Coming out I loved the pick. He fell after being top player in his grade 9-11th grade, his knock was power so he pressed to sell out on that senior year which lead to his drop.

I always said since he was drafted he was a Trae Turner clone & honestly I still see it and it’s exciting! The tools line up really well 5 years later still. I don’t know, I’m feeling more excited about him than any prospect in a long while. He seems like he’s adjusting quickly & could just be a real solid dude in the 1 or two spot for years to come. I’m so excited to follow each of his at bats! I think most of his abs so far he has worked count to 5,6,7 pitches at least. That is so impressive for a young kid!

My discussion question is how for you all feel about his potential? We all just riding his current wave? How excited are we about him? Who are we most excited about? Him? Joey, Garrett, Sal? What do you feel now is his MLB ceiling?

I feel he is a Gold Glove 2B currently, at SS probably not but prob be a plus defender. Think he will steal 40 bases and lead team in runs & always be a beast running.

I do see Trae Turner stats. Good average, Power mostly being in the teens until later in 20s. He will get on base (will walk more) and steal 30-40 in his early days. Don’t think he he will be an All-Star every year but do see him being a guy who could sneak into a few possibly. What you all think?

I’ve seen too many hot prospects fizzle out to let my expectations run that wild after a few games or weeks in MLB.

I will say at this embryonic stages of their careers that this Brewers team has the potential to be more interesting than one made up almost entirely of career journeymen and veteran players who are past their peak.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Career journeyman and veteran players past their peak? Sounds a lot like the circa 1993-2004 Selig Brewers.

Yeah, I think this team might be a scooch better than those ones.

Awesome to see a great start from Turang, but it doesn’t really change my expectations at all. Maybe gives me a lil more confidence his wRC+ for the season will end up closer to 100 than to 80.

His plate-discipline, athleticism, speed, defense, instincts and baserunning aren’t going anywhere even it takes some time for him to impact the baseball.

With his super-high floor at 2B, I have plenty of patience.

I can't think of any reason to temper my enthusiasm. It costs me nothing. It's April, it's baseball, and having been a Brewer fan since they arrived in 1970, I have usually looked for reasons to be optimistic (exception for the Lachemann years). I have rarely had this kind of rookie capital to be excited about in a long time. I thought Yount and Bobby Sheldon were going to be the double play combo for the ages. I was excited for Pat Listach, Rickie Weeks, Billy Joe Robidoux, and Jaime Cocanower. Cal Eldred and Ben Sheets. Marshall Edwards, Sixto Lezcano, Len Sakata...even though my heart has been broken almost every single time, I'm back. Turang, Wiemer, Frelick! This year's Jim Rice/Fred Lynn, Jerome Walton/Dwight Smith. Let's go!

We're fans, if you don't enjoy the highs and the lows what's the point?

Turang's homer had barely landed in left field, and there were "well, rookies will have ups and downs" posts in the IGT. I don't get it.

That was me. Sorry. Just trying to keep expectations tempered.

You're a great poster, for sure. I'm gonna get carried away in the moment, but it is what keeps me invested. Hope is a beautiful thing.

I think it's more fun to enjoy all the emotions. he may be great, he may be crap by end of season, but let's enjoy the whole journey, this team's big guys coming into the season haven't fired yet(bar Winker) and we're scoring runs! Let's get excited, and if we are disappointed down the line, let's be disappointed then

Now, hold on, Jake. If he is really good, they will have to trade him in 2030, so you better not get too excited today.

I'll admit that I did have some ROY thought go through my head recently, but I'm not quite ready to anoint him as the next Yount either.   Always got to love a rookie starting well though.  Really takes that initial pressure off him.  Even Wiemer's more modest, but still good start is a positive sign for the kid.  They will have some struggles at some point this year, but at least they cleared the first hump.

I think he's kind of a cross between Craig Counsell (the player) and the 2002-2005 version of Jimmy Rollins.

Very good defense, excellent OBP skills, but he's got speed, and he can get a lot more XBH than you might expect. I wouldn't be surprised to see a .270 average, a high OBP, 25-30 doubles, 30 steals, and to see him hit double figures in triples and homers.

Anyone who saw that land in left field had engaged too heavily in Opening Day revelry.

The thing that I have loved about Turang's start is that he's doing everything well that he did in AAA. He's not chasing (97th percentile chase rate), he's running the bases extremely well (96th percentile sprint speed...this was news to me. Did not know he had that type of speed), and he's playing great defense.

If he continues to do these 3 things well it leaves him with a super high floor.

Oh man, if we don't win 10-0 the IGT are unbearable. You'd think it's a bunch of crotchety 60+ year old men complaining about everything and telling kids to get off their lawn. Apparently there's so much talent in there, they can find a way to be negative in a 10-0 win.

The thing I like about him is he helps in so many different ways. It's so refreshing so see someone who can do more than one thing well while doing so few things poorly.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

The thing on Turang thus far is, there's zero feelings on there being a loss from Kolten Wong after his Spring Training and these first 4 games. If Turang has 15HRs in him on the season, he's actually going to post better WAR than Wong did.

I have been a Turang defender for awhile now I guess.  At the highest possible outcome for Turang is probably Trea Turner but he needs to develop the power to be at Turner's level.  That is still yet to be seen.  More than likely he will be a Jeff Cirillo or Mark Loretta who can play SS and 2B.  I really believe Turang can be a .300/.440/.800 type of a hitter which is extremely valuable even if his power never develops.  At worst you are looking at a 2B or SS version of Juan Pierre.

Not nit picking your post... just trying to remember if Cirillo actually played SS? Obviously the lion share of his time was 3B, but I couldn't remember if he played any SS early in his career?

I think Turang has better range than either of them and thus will be a better defensive player (though Jeff at 3B was excellent).

Offensively, I'd be happy if he was between the "Lo"s.

Mostly just comparing him to Cirillo and Loretta offensively.  Defensively it is hard to find a comp for Turang.  Turner may actually be a good comp defensively for Turang.  Swanson is also another good comp but I am not sure Turang is as good defensively as Swanson.

Every time Turang gets on base is another step Willy takes out the door…

This is just asinine.
