I am assuming the Brewers think they can get him to tap into some of his power.  This is another under slot pick it seems.

Maybe draft someone like Tanner Witt in the third round?

https://www.mlb.com/prospects/draft/tanner-witt-691027

I feel like every year we say, “Maybe these Day 1 guys will sign under slot so we can swing for a home run on Day 2” but it turns out to not be the case. I have a hunch that Knoth will be more costly than most people think.

Probably and that maybe why they went with who they did in the second round.

It wouldn't shock me if he ends up being the biggest bonus like Misiorowski was last year.

They're also similar because of their competition. Boeve from the Summit League and Black from the Horizon League.

Yes and no. Not entirely sure who UNO scheduled non-conference but, as a Wright State alum, we always schedule top tier OOC teams and Black held his own those games basically doing what he does now. Conference wise, absolutely, since the Horizon got gutted due to expansion since my days there.

2019
2 vs #10 Ole Miss, 3 vs #19 Oklahoma State, 1 vs #9 East Carolina (3-14, 2 RBI as a true Freshman in those games)

2020
3 vs #6 Mississippi State, 1 vs #1 Louisville, 3 vs #20 Auburn, 3 vs #11 Tennessee (8-34, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 2B, 3B, 5 BB, 7 K)

2021
2 vs #2 Vanderbilt, 3 vs #23 Alabama, NCAA Tourney vs #2 Tennessee and Duke (8-23, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 2B, 7 BB, 5 K)

I really can't think of a year we said that other than last year.

Our 1st round picks have...generally been guys who were pretty firmly entrenched as 1st rounders or even guys who were projected higher and had a poor spring such as Turang.

Can you think of another player we took that was speculted to be below slot? I guess Small could have fit that mold. We went a little under on Small...a LITTLE over IIRC on Kelly and then Dillard, Holt, Hamilton I believe were all signed over slot.

This draft is a bit unique. The Brewers aren't getting much love on the MLB network...(not sure how I will emotionally cope with that) but there is still a whole lot of talent out there.

UNO didn't play a ton of super high level OOC teams but they did end up playing a lot of OOC baseball during Boeve's time there so there may be a bit more to those numbers than just "well he played the Summit League." Competition was a lot stiffer in 2021 and 2022 than it was in 2023 though.

I thought that was the case for 2021 as well, but when I looked back on it I realized that we did take some swings, but just couldn’t sign many of the late round picks.

Yeah, but Frelick went for a bit over slot. They missed on Biggio, Hollan and Holtan, but they got Low, Vire, Avina-who I really like as a longshot.

Looking back on that draft, obviously I hope we do better, but if we hit on the top 2 picks and then 2 years from now have a 3rd performing like Carlos Rodriguez, I'll be thrilled. Frelick top ~20 prospect, Black just became a top 100 in one of them. Again, that'll all shuffle after this weekend. I think the top 5 picks will all become top ~40 prospects immediately. I'd even say top 25, but Is that likely? Seems like a bit much and I've never paid much attention to how quickly 1st rounders are placed in the top 100, but this was an extraordinary draft.

But hey, maybe we'll take another swing at one of those three who got away?

I love Travis Sykora, Cameron Johnson, and Cole Schoenwetter as big upside HS arms. However who knows signabilty matters. Hunter Owen, Jaron Watts-Brown, and Tanner Witt all seem likely to be solid 4/5 starters but without huge ceilings. Plenty of interesting bats as well, my favorite is Brandon Winokur a 6'5" HS bat that has great power and athleticism.

Boeve played well in the Cape Cod League which is much better competition than the Summit

But where Boeve caught the eye of pro scouts was his standout summer seasons in the Northwoods League in 2021 and the Cape Cod League last year.

I think it happened a lot in the 2009-15 time frame but hasn’t been a theme in more recent years

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

Russ Smith was the big one that I thought we’d save a ton on. He was a 4th year guy taken in the 2nd and if I remember correctly we gave him near slot money. Should have been like 10% of that.

Could have maybe got Roc Riggio to sign if we had really bent that 2nd round pick over.

So are we thinking Wilken starts his Brewers career in Appleton?

I believe most college hitters they start in Low A atleast initially

There's a pitcher out here close to me who I'd love to see the Brewers draft in round two or three.  His name's Kyle Carr.  A junior college lefty who throws in the mid to high nineties.

Did your friend get drafted yet?

if so … when & by whom?

Wilken may not be able to stick at third … seems like all power with a weak overall hitting tool

Did we draft Rowdy Tellez? 🤣
