Man what a rush. The front office has to feel great about how this worked out.

Lots of high schoolers added to the promising international signings. Going to make for some stacked teams in the low minors.

If I have my math right, the Brewers signed 17 out of 20 draft picks. Anyone else come to a different total?

Isn't it 18 of 21?

Yes 18 of 21. Gholston (HS), Watts (JUCO), and Morton (HS) were the only 3 not to sign.

I was figuring maybe 14. Thought they might get one of the 11-20 high schoolers. Hopefully one or two of these guys can blossom like Adams did this year or, on the pitching side, like a certain part of one of our lesser deadline deals.

Awesome they were able to sign so many of the 11-20! Was expecting that!

Exciting draft class that has infused a lot of young talent to mix in with the young International signings!

Hope these kids get some good  IPs & PAs in over last month.

This might be it for the signings, but I'm still thrilled to get these two HS.  Note that the Brewers rarely go over cap even though the cash penalty is modest up to 5% overage.  They had just under $700k left to spend so that could very easily be used up by these two.  Here's hoping we do get one more.  Bjorn Johnson maybe?

Yes, you've said, but isn't it likely that was because they just couldn't get a guy to sign?

I believe they tried to get Riggio signed(for instance). I'm sure there was a player or two from this class who they were close to not signing or may not have signed.

I just doubt that's some organizational philosophy when you're talking about a really small, insignificant amount of money relative to ALL the other money they spend on player development.

Damn...just getting caught up.

Morton had Corbin Burnes comps. That's really the only way I could be more excited, but that's incredibly greedy after hearing the initial questions about our picks in rds 11-20 and the inference that very few would sign. Watts if going to a 4 year after this year, right? If I'm mistaken and he's going back to a Juco, then they could still sign him up until next year, but...just an awesome draft.

I am curious what it would have taken to get Morton or Gholston signed just out of curiosity, but man, what a draft.

Watts is committed to Auburn and he's only 1 year removed from HS so I think he needs to play there for 2 years before entering the draft again? Maybe not. Don't understand how that works.

Impressive.  Plenty of reasons to be excited, but HS picks are high risk and sometimes don't make it past low-A.

And sometimes they're Mike Trout.  :classic_biggrin:

I’m just happy we’re swinging for the fences here. I was fully prepared to see a run of org-fillers on Day 3.

Happy to be wrong for sure.  Got to like the new GM and the draft approach for this year.

Just quick and probably not accurate, but it looks like every round 11-20 that we signed a player, that player got at least the 3rd highest bonus of that round.

We had to have spent the most money 11-20 in the entire draft.

See this a lot but Arnold is not new GM, he was named GM in 2020 already. Stearns was President of Ops until this season so Arnold added that role to go with his GM position. Also GMs should never be really praised for a draft in baseball. Out of the major sports leagues, GMs in baseball are least involved with drafting. This is because they have least impact on the major league team. Rookies in NFL & NBA need to impact right away. Hockey is more in between the two. Baseball, these kids are 2-6 years away with 20 rounds (better than 40-50) to fill boards with. So they are not the ones picking the players, doing the negotiations, and leading the organization of boards. They are informed on the board and give input but they really let and trust their director of scouting to run the drafts.

I think Tod Johnson is easily the least appreciated director of Scouting Brewers have had. People also want to give his credit away to Stearns and now Arnold which was never done to the guys before him. For Melvin, people where talking about his draft classes, it was all about Jack Z and Seid. They got the praise and the criticism. Same with Montgomery when he took over. This board was lit up with talk, love, and hate over Jack Z, Seid, and even Montgomery. Tod Johnson gets kind of forgotten about and not talked about even though he's finding arms like Jack Z did bats and has done pretty well with the bats as well. He has been really good and think he is up there with Jack Z who helped build the Brewers into contenders in 2000s. Lucky for him, he had high picks to work with which Tod has not. Seid and Montgomery looking back, missed a lot and very spotty on guys making up to MLB and producing.

Once you go to a 4 year school, you're not draft eligible under after your Jr season or if you'll turn 21 years old by I THINK the end of the MiLB season, but not positive. I know there are draft eligible Soph's but they're rare. In fact, I think there was at least one that we drafted. Hollan from '21 perhaps? Maybe it was Riggio?

Justin Chambers is a big strong lefty at 6’2 215. Was 3rd best prep in AZ & top lefty. FB/Slider combo with feel for change he mixes in. Tops out at around 94, sits 88-91. Also flashes a curve. Slider is said to be nasty & his out pitch. Doesn’t turn 18 for another couple of weeks.

Tweet of him throwing don’t know how to put in tweet but training session

Perfect last July tweet on stuff

I like this pick & sign. Not as hyped as Letson & Johnson but could be really good get!

That's not what I was trying to say, I was more just speculating that there have probably been a few times they WOULD have gone over if one of the prep picks would have agreed to it.

You were right...they hadn't gone over. I think everyone on the board and everyone who follows the draft was wrong when they were predicting how many people we'd sign. To come 29$ away is incredible!

Just ANOTHER thing that makes this system so incredibly exciting. It's not just Chourio, Quero or the big names, it's the depth they've got coming up behind those guys. It feels like we're going to have just wave after wave. Yophery Rodriguez, Wilken, Knoth....Pratt, Bitonti, Guillarte. Just depth all over the place staggered almost perfectly.

This is how you build a system like the Rays, Dodgers or Padres(except they just turn and trade 'em all away after finding one gem after another).

It was so close to the teams signing every single top-10 round pick this year. The Cardinals' 10th rounder looks to be the only one that didn't sign, and even he apparently agreed before changing his mind. Wonder what happened there.
