Bravo to Johnson & co.

Imo, the farm system prior to this draft lacked power bats, and power arms — boom done.

Wilken & Bitonti both have big power. Pratt at present is hit over power, but at 6’ 4” should add power eventually and the best part, be able to stay at SS. Boeve could follow the same path as Black and also add power. That’s 4 potential power bats from 1 class.

Knoth is a power arm starter. Birchard the proverbial Brewers JC power arm. More pitching signed as well.

I can’t remember being this excited over a Brewers draft — ever — and that’s going back 53 years with me.

I have a completely unsubstantiated theory that the Brewers have become a destination club for players. A good reputation throughout the scouting/agent world. If true, Player X may decide to take a small discount to play for the Brewers instead of a club that has a lousy reputation.

Presumably the Brewers wouldn't be the ONLY such club. Obviously, the Yankees, Dodgers, Astros, etc. also have excellent reputations, but those teams, too, would be more likely to stash you in the minors as long as possible.

I wonder if this is indeed the case, it'd be interesting to hear from draft picks (although they may not be entirely unbiased at that point). Obviously you have the "prestige" teams, and the hometown favorites, but beyond that I do wonder if the Brewers are getting a good rep.

This is probably the most exciting draft class I’ve seen in quite some time. I’ve been hoping for more power bats and arms for years, and the FO delivered big time.

The Brewers had 4.5 million before signing their two college drafters in 11-20 range, the 7-10 picks (all of whom are likely very cheap)

That by my count leaves ~ $1.4 million among the cheapest picks and for some of the HS guys in later round! May have ability to spend one million or so on on the 11-20 risky picks

I still haven't seen numbers on the six college pitchers we signed. But if we assume they all signed for somewhere in the 150K range, and then add in the 5% overage we're allowed, thats where Spencer probably gets his $1M figure.

Round/Pick Name HS/NCAA/CC Position Slot Value Signing Bonus Slot Savings
1 (18) Brock Wilken NCAA 3B $4,021,400 $3,150,000 $871,400

2 (54) Mike Boeve NCAA 1B/3B $1,546,100 $1,250,000 $296,100
3 (87) Eric Bitonti HS SS/3B $796,200 $1,750,000 -$953,800
4 (119) Jason Woodward NCAA RHP $557,900 $247,500 $310,400
5 (155) Ryan Birchard CC RHP $392,700 $322,500 $70,200
6 (182) Cooper Pratt HS SS $309,900 $1,350,000 -$1,040,100

So with the 7 official signings we have in round 1-6, that leave us with $1,428,130 for rounds 7-10 and 11-20 and remember 11-20 the only the money over $150K counts against the bonus pool. If those reported numbers for Pratt and Bitonti are correct we will have a lot left over for rounds 11-20.

I think for pitchers I believe it. Team has proven we can develop pitchers really well in our lab.

The Brewers entire draft strategy confuses me this year. It seems like they drafted underslot for 5 rounds, only to try to throw a ton of money at Pratt and some day 3 guys.  Pratt is actually their second highest ranked draftee according to MLB.com. I would assume they didn't think he would be around so late, but I don't remember so many underslot guys being taken in the early rounds for the brewers.

I like the strategy used.

In my opinion we got a 1st and 4 solid 2nd round talents (3 with 1st round potrntial). We also got to chose a couple of our scouts favorites like Woodward and Birchard. Then we took 2 or 3 HS kids who could have been top 5 round picks in 11-20 if one of the early HS guys doesn't sign.

Agree.  Its odd.  If Pratt could be signed for 1.35M, why did he fall to the 6th round?  I was hoping it would not take more than 2M to sign him.

Says in the article linked above that teams were wary they could get him off his commitment in early rounds. Wonder if it was almost a bluff on his behalf to get a higher # but then realized he didn't actually want to go to college. May never know

Ecstatic with these numbers.

Now which guy do we want the most?

Presumably the Brewers want the 11th rounder, but what does the mob here think?
