I understand all that, BUT he has had "scant" opportunity ... he was an asset as a defensive player certainly, too.

Can't he play 3rd base and A.M. Sterio 2nd base against lefties?

Seems like something else is brewing here ...

Monasterio, after showing signs of slumping a little defensively, has righted that ship & actually been very good at 3B. That's as big a reason as any as to why Anderson has disappeared. No need to sub him in defensively, like they do with Wiemer. His biggest asset isn't needed. And any scraps to pick up like pinch-running or PHing vs LHP, you have Miller back on the roster.

If a LHP is starting against us, frankly I'd rather roll with Turang for the couple ABs he'd be facing that guy, and have his glove on the field.

Pinch-hitting?   Owen Miller or Brian Anderson?  Why not Anderson occasionally in such situations where some power might be needed?

Turang against lefties is not good.  Anderson against lefties I feel a whole lot better about!

I feel like the Brewers have dissed Brian Anderson unfairly.

There are bad spells, and then there are bad spells. Some of us amateur baseball fans were disturbed by his numbers when we signed him, but the internet baseball experts (the IBEs) corrected us.

You don't need to manufacture some "little man vs the big experts" dramatic conflict here like you're fighting a righteous war against The Man or something. We're all fans debating things on the internet.

There is certainly a possibility something is brewing. Possibility that Counsell and Arnold are not seeing eye to eye regarding 3B, especially considering how he has used players in the past. Being a former player himself and the professional that he is I would hope that is not the case but a weird situation.

It's an American tradition to poke a little fun at people whose opinion of themselves is a touch lofty.

Possible lineup w/ Donaldson? Assuming no Yelich still against the LHP.

Canha DH

Contreras C

Santana 1B

Adames SS

Monasterio 2B

Donaldson 3B

Frelick RF

Wiemer CF

Taylor LF

Not bad.

I guess when Counsell said yesterday that calling up Donaldson wasn't imminent he meant the next few hours.

He was acquired to be a 2nd LHP in the bullpen. The other candidates:

Justin Wilson came back from his injury, hurt himself warming up, and is gone for the year.

Clayton Andrews has looked totally outmatched in his couple of outings.

Claudio was up very briefly this spring ("He couldn't be any worse!!!!!!!"). Yeah, he could.

Ashby doesn't appear close to being able to contribute.

Sousa put up a 13.50 ERA in his two outings.

They signed Abad. His most recent outing at Nashville, I think he faced like 5-6 hitters & retired no one.

Gasser is worth debating, but it seems they want to keep him starting as opposed to coming up here & working maybe once a week. Maybe when N'Ville is done playing we'll see him.

That's where they stand.

Right, so he was not acquired to be our 8th option.  That statement was false, as I said previously.

We got him with the intent on being an important part of the bullpen, and it failed.  Admit it and DFA the guy already.  We've seen what he can do, and it is basically nothing,  Doesn't matter which situation we bring him into, he fails.

The Brewers are hoping to find lightning in a bottle with Josh Donaldson, who has a strong track record from previous seasons and could perhaps get some better fortune going forward. Owen Miller sent down to Nashville. I feel bad foe Owen Miller.

I hate this lineup with Donaldson in it. He did little to nothing at Nashville to deserve a call up. I hope CC has a short leash with him.

A .900 OPS is "little to nothing"?

Anybody can look at Baseball Savant and easily see why they swapped out Miller for Donaldson. A corner infielder below 10th percentile in hard hitting categories isn't going to last long in the bigs.

Now we'll see if Donaldson plays like he has something to prove or if he's counting down the days to hitting the golf course.

Your right.  I see Monasterio moved to second base tonight in place of Turang.  It looks like Counsell is grasping at straws for some reason??? He needs to relax and dance with who you brung you, barring injury or terrible play.

Not a big risk move here at all ... Turang against lefties is a losing proposition, isn't it?  Turang against lefties:  image.png.99111d8fcfba919d176a22a09ec12b2e.png

If you look at Monasterio, Turang, and Donaldson's splits vs LHP the reasoning will be clear.

With a 176BA

I couldn’t care less about BA. Especially in 16 ABs.

If Donaldson has a .900 OPS from here to the end of the season (not that I necessarily think he will), I feel comfortable saying we’ll win the division.

gmLI (game Leverage Index) measures the leverage when a relief pitcher enters the game. Here are Brewers rankings since August 1st, along with their innings pitched...

Devin (2.31 gmLI | 12.1 IP)
Payamps (1.69 gmLI | 14.2 IP)
Peguero (1.48 gmLI | 16.1 IP)
Uribe (1.19 gmLI | 17.0 IP)
Milner (1.09 gmLI | 14.2 IP)
Megill (0.74 gmLI | 11.2 IP)
Wilson (0.73 gmLI | 17.1 IP)
Chafin (0.73 gmLI | 10.1 IP)

Chafin is 8th in gmLI and 8th in IP since August 1st, which to me indicates he was likely acquired to be 8th on the bullpen depth chart.

If not, he would have been used more often and in higher leverage spots.

It feels a little like desperation for a team that's 3 games in the lead with 20 left to play. Donaldson's last good season was 2019, when he hit .259, and his last really good season was 2015, when he hit .297. Also our coaches do not have a great record of improving incoming hitters. But let's see what he can do!
