Great, now sign Santana (or Cooper I guess?)

I’d guess the deal is contingent on Rhys being the primary 1B, so probably no Santana.

Assuming $17M per year that brings payroll to around $122M versus $126M to end last year using the numbers on roster resource.

Probably enough room to add a “legit” DH like Turner or Belt (Joc or JDM likely too rich) if they want to push things a little more in the last year with Burnes/Adames.

He isn't a good defender and is coming off an injury. I have no issue with him concentrating on hitting.

Maybe Santana as the primary 1B with Hoskins at DH?  He may not be 100% yet and the Brewers would want him to be able to play the full year so Santana at 1B.  Maybe this was the plan and Santana wanted more than what the Brewers were willing to give to get both.

Glad they got the big bat they sorely needed. Interested to see what terms are.  Hoping for a $15M in 2024 and $19M in 2025.  That will make the opt out more difficult for Hoskins and if he does, it frees up money for 2025.  With Burnes and Adames becoming free agents in 2025, they will have more room to absorb a $19M contract

Why would it make it hard? That second year is nothing more than insurance for Hoskins if he comes back a disaster. Any resemblance of his old self and he will rip  that up to go sign a 3-5 multi year deal. Though if he rips it up, I am pretty sure we can offer him a QO and get compensation. As long as there isn’t a handshake agreement to not do so…unless I am way behind on current QO rules or if they even exist still. Which is possible.

Regardless, if you are a Brewers fan, you are definitely hoping this ends up a one year deal. If he doesn’t opt out, that is a pretty good sign he played terribly.

My understand is we could give him a QO. Would be fantastic to get a great year out of Hoskins and also a comp pick.

Can't think of a better fit for this team that should help take pressure off of everybody else. Which is really necessary when you consider how many young guys there still will be in the lineup. This coupled with a lineup that last struggled with power and hitting lefties.. It truly is a seamless fit.

All lies! We were told all off season that this wouldn't happen and MA was just being cheap and wouldn't spend on anyone this off season!  I refuse to believe this is true!

It blows me away that others think this. We are a bottom 3 market size and payroll has been approaching middle of the pack consistently in this competitive window. Considering our market size, we could easily operate similarly to the As or pirates. I understand you are being sarcastic.

I like the fact that we signed a good player. The contract seems fine, and the fit is very good. I just don't know that this was the best use of our limited resources. It's also quite risky, we really need this move to work out...so making the upside play on an injury risk player...is just that, risky. I'm also intrigued on what he might look like defensively. He definitely isn't a double plus defensive player at his position like our middle infielders. Seems like he's been league average at 1b but does the injury make him worse?

Let's just hope he hits good enough that he's only a brewer this year and he opts out.

It would be pretty ideal if the option was around $20mil though. Then you can offer the QO with zero risk as the numbers would be nearly identical.

There's the 15+M contract the team didn't have yet!  Glad to see one signed that was wanted by boosayers of offseason signings. This makes for a promising top of the lineup if Chourio can hold down a reasonable top 4.  Hoskins/Contreras and Yelich. No more Adames in top 4. Plus get 1 of Frelick/Mitchell/or even Black in top 2 as season progresses. Has a small feeling of GB Packers with the potential youth bat additions to flip the offense to well above avg.

2/34. Interesting how this comes out. Straight 17M per? Since an opt out vs option? 14/20 where an opt out is a 3m buyout of 20 remaining?

I’d have no problem with that either, I just don’t think Boras and Hoskins want to commit to DH only or primary DH sometimes 1B on the defensive spectrum so soon because it eats into future earning potential.

Coming off surgery, and with the opt out, they are going to want to get 120-130 games at 1B to show he’s healthy and deserving of a three four year deal.

That’s why I think guys like Turner or Belt, who are already in the primary DH sometimes 1B phase of their career are more likely than Santana if the Brewers  decide to add another bat.

Turner would be a better fit but I won't believe he is interested until he actually signs. Belt is kinda intruging but 2022 is very concerning.

He's signed now. I think you can play him and Santana at 1B/DH enough that it'd make more sense to bring back someone who can be a defensive replacement or at least splits days in the field. Don't really like the idea of sacrificing that much defense at 1st(though I have no idea how good Bauers is there or if Black can play well there).

Either way, great signing. Really surprised they pulled this off for 2 years a this price.

This is cool. I was firmly in the “not gonna happen” camp. I thought someone would give him more years or money. Glad to be wrong.

Love this move. Hopefully he's healthy and ready to hit. Chourio Yelich Hoskins maybe Adames Frelick and of course Contreras make for a decent lineup.

A lineup not even craigers could mess up

Certainly gotta like this move. Hopefully he has fully recovered from the injury.

I still think this team needs a bit more yet to really make some noise, but this is a great start.

Nice to see the Brewers make a move to improve a typically weak spot in the order. Certainly is risk as noted but still short term and looking like they are preparing for one last run.

Color me surprised, in a good way!  Figured the Brewers were going to make at least 1 more significant add at 1B/DH/3B before spring training and frankly I had ruled Hoskins out due to his asking price.  Guessing he and Boras realized he wasn't going to get the AAV they wanted over a 4-5 year contract and went the shorter term deal with an opt-out if he has a good year.

Hoskins could definitely fit in at 1B, but he'd also make a really good option at DH if the Brewers still wanted to throw $6-7M at Santana for next season, too.  Or, if they wanted to get really nuts, Soler and Martinez are still jobless DHs!

Big Fella? Who the heck gave him that one?

Take this for what it's worth, but late last night my girl friend from Philly texted me this:

"Just know that you all are getting the best, most amazing man in the sport. My all time favorite (and I mean favorite) baseball player.. take care of him. This one hurts 😞😢🫡"

I don't think we will have any clubhouse issues with him by all accounts...
