Because if it was an issue previously, and he is your star closer, then your completely surprised it is still an issue when camp begins in spring?

Look at Brook Lopez and the Bucks, they were in contact with him and his Dr.'s all offseason because of his back issues. This isn't little league. Even big colleges would be on top of this with there star players. But the Brewers were totally surprised with all this.

Look at the symptoms: “my back hurts when throwing”. Real general and non-specific. Those symptoms could be regular soreness, strain, or something else anll together etc.

Then, once the season ended who knows if he kept in contact with team doctors on the status of his back.

We do know when he reported back pain this spring that wasn’t just usual soreness from ramping up again, they had him get a  MRI. Purportedly, stress fractures cannot really be diagnosed absent an MRI and they don’t appear that different on the scan from soft tissue swelling (which would also cause back pain and would be expected in ramping up after a long time off), hence Williams went to a specialist for a 2nd opinion. I don’t know how the Brewers and especially their medical team can be criticized under the circumstances

I think maybe more of a closer by committee sort of thing? Megill and Payamps, maybe joined by Uribe later.

Yep……

Best possible outcome, the Brewers bullpen doesn't miss a beat. That would allow the Brewers to pick the best option of trading Williams or keep him for the stretch run depending on which path they feel boosts the stretch run the most.

Worst possible outcome, the bullpen flounders, the brewers are out of it by the trade deadline and Williams doesn't have enough time to show he's healthy limiting his trade value.

I'd also add in the worst possible outcome that DW's issue would flare up after returning forcing him into back surgery and basically eliminating any chance of the Brewers cashing out on him.

There won't be many save situations anyways with the Brewers scoring 1-2 runs an inning

By that math, Milwaukee scores between 9 to 18 runs per game 🙂

Because he is just going for a second opinion now.  This should have been done 2 months ago. Not 2 weeks before opening day.

That is a players decision and not a team decision.

I'll believe it when I see it. Teams says this all the time and rarely do they stick with it. Maybe it's a committee for about a month but at some point they will chose a guy and stick with him.

Exaggerating a bit, aren't we?  Literally half of their games it will only be 8-16 runs per game.

I hope this gives Vieira an opportunity to make the OD. He's out of options so I figured we would lose him. Just curious what he could do with an extended opportunity

Agreed. Looked good last year. If he sucks they can always DFA him.

Agreed.  I think Murphy's comments are basically a coach's way of saying "I have no clue who is going to prove they can handle the job so we are going to try out a few guys and see who does the best."

Yeah, the vicissitude of reliever performance usually has a way of sorting these messes out. Or at least revealing that you don’t have an in-house solution to the mess at all. One of the two.

Sort of true... but this season, why wouldn't you try out a few guys and see who handles it well?  No one likes to see Williams hurt, but might as well make the most of a bad situation and develop a few guys in that role instead of piling it on one.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

I didn't say they'd all succeed in the role... 😉

And for my "optimism", I'm assuming a down year... a perfect time to develop younger talent.  So maybe more a lemonade from lemons approach.

If I were truly optimistic, I'd be expecting a 27 K game from Hall-to-Megill-to-Uribe! 😂
