Diamondbacks (Montgomery) vs Brewers (Montas): 9/22/24, 1:10pm

My dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer 15 months ago. Treatment has been very effective so far though so he's doing really well. He hadn't been to a Brewer game in years but went today with a buddy because he says he wants to do things like that while he's still at a point in his life where he's feeling well enough to go do it.

Felt really bad for him when we went down 8-0. Was so happy for him when I got a text from him an hour ago saying "CREW WINS!!!!! WOW!!!"

I'm so Glad the Brewers win fired him up with positivity. I hope the treatment continues to work also for him.

That’s the kind of talk that makes Murphy a pretty darn good coach. I was there today and you could just feel the disdain with our crowd towards that team. Things were getting out of hand.

He still sucks though.   And I’m not being sarcastic.   😀😀😀😀

Gotta say your hatred and vitriol are consistent.

That was a pretty good presser. Besides mentioning how the booing got everyones' attention he talked about the team learning that you can't coast (I'm sure they knew that, but there's nothing like an 8-0 visual aid to pound it home). Maybe a veteran team would hear the booing & respond with a mental middle finger, This is a good group to have their sensibilities jolted, I think.

He also talked about Montas tipping his pitch grip to runners on 2nd. If true that's pretty bad. Also his failure to back up 3rd base.

You really have to wonder about how high Mitchells' ceiling is . On his second AB, coming up against a lefty, running the count full & then hitting one--hard--to the opposite field was to me one of the most impressive ABs of the game. OTOH, trying to steal on a 3-0 count, even if you AREN'T down by a few runs, is curious to say the least.

Damn, Sanchez had a bad game behind the dish. Really bad.

Apparently, any 'double tick' you hear is a foul tip. Bat to glove, glove to shin guard, cup to shin guard, mask to beer vendor-------Maybe we want to revisit that not being reviewable.

At the end of the day a real "thanks, I needed that" win.

Was never going to be able to watch today. Knew they went down 8-0, and came here to catch up on the IGT anxiety. Didn’t even know they won til I read the thread. Kind of a funny way to find out.

We must stick up for the Mets tonight over the Phillies because I think the Mets have the tiebreaker over the Diamondbacks if they end up with the same record.  I would love to see the Diamondbacks get knocked out before the end of the season.  Brewers do not match up well against the Snakes.

Followed this one through 3, took a few innings off, came back at 8-6. What an awesome 8th inning.

I know it doesn't matter in terms of portending anything, but it's stuff like this that makes this team FUN. There's zero point in arguing about "how disappointed will we be if they crash out early?" because we all want this team to win the whole thing. What I will say is that the joy quotient of this team is through the freaking roof. The '21, '22, and '23 teams were painful to watch, despite being very good. Just the emotional exhaustion of trying to win every game 3-2, praying the offense could actually secure some baserunners and the pitching could somehow hold on. It was the least fun I've ever had playing winning baseball. Win or lose in October, this season has been a blast.

The process of watching this team has been so many steps beyond that, it's just wild. I hope we get to see them as long as possible. Be great for Milwaukee, be amazing for us, and, yeah, it'd be damn good for baseball. Let's see speed, defense, and balls in play win a World Series.

Garrett Mitchell can be a star.

He needs to play everyday from here on out. Thanks.

I agree 100%  He just needs to stay healthy.

He also said "that was worth more then anything he could have done or said."

What's that about the fans having no influence over what happens on the field......?

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

Just saw the tweet that said Murphy mentioned that montas was showing his grip and batters were getting tipped off

fix that Frankie and come out strong in playoffs

I guess they never got booed before at AMFAM Field. They do have influence.

I don’t know. If he can’t catch up to a fastball by now, you wonder if he has what it takes to be a star. That being said, he’s a 250 hitter with a good glove and arm. He could serve this organization well for a long time.

Mitchell was at 1.7 WAR on FanGraphs over 207 PAs entering today, that is a 5 WAR per 600 PAs pace.

Of the 169 players with at least 1.5 WAR so far this year his 207 PAs are the fewest with Jose Trevino (227 PAs) next lowest and only 14 of those 169 players coming in under 300 PAs.

He’s already a small sample star, at this point it’s just a matter of keeping it up and staying healthy.

At the low end Mitchell is Brandon Nimmo and on the high end he is Grady Sizemore for potential.  I am not sure he ever gets to his full potential so a little bit better than Nimmo is probably where Mitchell ends up.

Here is the fangraphs expected win percentage chart (Link). All in all, it's pretty crazy to believe they won. They basically climbed two mountains.

Maybe Murph’s nickname should be The Sherpa.
