I don’t know what this means.   I meant at some point you can’t rely on devil magic and just insert a bunch of backups that are backups to your other backups and expect to win.   The other team has professional baseball players too

It means Collins is out because his wife is having a baby and Perkins is out on the bereavement list.

The events of real life have given the Brewers no alternative but to insert backups in the lineup for the playing of their game(s).
