Brandon Woodruff - Heyman: Woody accepts qualifying offer 1 yr/ $22million

Posted

Passan said he thinks IF he accepts it increases the chances of a Peralta trade……sounds just like an opinion not sourced info to me……but it’s out there.

ps one thing I despise about the hot stove season is sports journalists giving opinions on trades that turn into click bait because people think it’s actually news. I prefer they stick in their lanes and share actual sourced information ……when they start opining on podcasts/tv or in columns they are just like fans throwing stuff against the wall.

Totally agree. Belief is not evidence.

Part of that particular "take" makes no sense at all, financially speaking.  As if Woody accepting $22M for one year (with no future payroll ramifications) is going to make Arnold suddenly think, "Oh no! We can't afford Peralta at $8M!"

The second part might have some truth to it: I could see us being even more reluctant to trade Peralta if Woodruff declines and signs somewhere else.

Adding $22 mill to this years payroll probably kills any flexibility to add offense, doesn’t it?

No.  We rarely sign FAs anyway.  Trades are far more likely to bring in offensive help.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

I hope to see some competition at shortstop in one form or another. We can’t live with a black hole at 9, can we?

I get it but any trade would have to not be involving too much salary to take on. If Woody accepts it would really suck if we traded Freddy, With an offensive “tweak” this team can win 100.+ games this year.

I thought I heard sports journalists sticking in their lanes outside my window this morning, but it was just a herd of flying elephants in Bermuda shorts.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

I think that's complicated for Arnold because you don't want to block Pratt, Made, or Pena in the next couple years.  But punting the offense from SS for a couple years is also a horrible idea when we're a legit contender now.

Moving Turang to short gives you a lot of flexibility because Durbin could move to 2B or stay at 3B, but I'm not sure they are willing to entertain that idea yet.

Would have leaned toward taking the compensation but considering it is a one year deal and still well under budget looking forward to a solid rotation next year. Don't believe Peralta is going anywhere and they try to win it all in 2026.

$30 mil for woody and Freddy at the top of the rotation is pretty great

As a huge Woodruff fan, this is great news!

Hoping they explore a longer deal that works for both team and player and Woody becomes a "life-long" Brewer.

The upside on this is tremendous and the downside is just a one year loss on the books

Very excited to have him back. He is a master of his craft on the mound. Now he just needs to master the art of availability

Adding 12, not 10. Likely has no influence at all on the coming season financially, other than he's playing for us and we likely got a much better player than we would have gone out and signed/traded for had he left.

Not sure what you mean. He’s getting 22 plus the 10 buyout. 32M+ total but yeah 10 was already accounted for and going to happen either way.

What a stupid move by the Brewers once again if they spend money they spend it like idiots typical. hand a guy 7.5 million to rehab with a 10 million buyout then resign him for 22 mil so he is really gonna make 32 million this year atrocious job by the front office

I'm surprised he accepted. I gotta think this makes Peralta more likely to be dealt. I would keep them both but Mark A don't usually roll like that.

I guess I'm not. I don't think anyone was going to give him $23mm. I could have seen something like $28/2, but I think the Brewers made a strong offer.

At his best Woodruff is an elite guy. Had we spent $22 million on a replacement SP it would be someone of the Jhoulys Chacin variety. I'd rather just bring him back.
