You’re right, and most of that WAR is from Ortiz in ‘24.

But hard not to be underwhelmed when you get an oft-injured long reliever and a all glove no hit SS for one of the ten best pitchers in the game at the time

Orioles also got Ike Irish with the comp pick when Burnes left as a free agent. He’s the orioles #4 prospect

I definitely think the FO was hoping for more. The comp pick may well swing this in the Os direction, but there's also still time, for Hall especially.

For me, I'm with you in terms of being underwhelmed by how that trade has gone down so far. I respect the underlying process (and, again, reasonable folks can disagree on that process), and I think it was just a case of the Crew took shots on a couple of guys with team control, hoping one of them became really good, and it just didn't happen.

Hey, 9-8 feels a lot better than 8-9 (even though there's no real difference).

You definitely take the Brewers giving up a run in the first and then the whole staff getting 24 scoreless outs. Huge credit to Chad Patrick, but not sleeping on any of the contributors tonight.

Had some batted ball luck, but this is a nice win when everyone admits (or should admit) that this team is just trying to hang around right now. Win a series tomorrow, and you're turning in a reasonable homestand.

I think you meant the opposite? We took Blake Burke with the comp pick.

This is so typical of a stretch when you feel like you're never going to win another game. Scored 7 & 6 Sunday & Yesterday, couldn't get big outs or make plays, and lost both. Then get about as good an outing as you can expect from Patrick & can't score. Luck was involved in the 8th, but I'll take Hamilton putting the ball in that spot every time. And I'm not sure how much luckier it was than Uribes' inning Tuesday (in reverse) when the Jays scored a run highlighted by two high-school level fly balls that weren't hit well enough to carry out to Mitchell.

Small victories. Contreras didn't hit the ball well in the 8th but the approach was beautiful, looking to go to RF the whole time. And Perkins actually had one of the best ABs of the night when he PH. Would definitely have him in vs the lefty tomorrow.

A win today was little more than the baseball gods finally saying “you know what, you guys deserve a break.”

But sometimes, that’s the kind of thing in this weird game to start getting things turned around again.

The bottom 3 of our order right now (Perkins, Ortiz, Hamilton) are slugging .200, .208, and .200. That is... something.

Luis Lara has to be so dang close to making his MLB debut. I hope he gets a shot.

I was hoping a Matos for Lara swap was the corresponding move for Yelich personally.

The Brewers certainly need offense and Lara is on a hot streak. Kind of came out of nowhere, always been a nice player with decent OBP but has been a great couple week stretch in AAA. Don't want him playing the Greg Jones role though, if Lara is up then let him play, especially since he switch hits.

I'm quoting you mainly as a reference to the conversation, I don't really have any big issue with what you've posted.

As someone mentioned the Brewers selected Blake Burke with the comp pick they received so this trade really can't be judged fairly yet. That doesn't mean folks can't have opinions though.

If it comes down to figuring out which team got the better comp pick then ultimately the Brewers choosing to trade Burnes worked as intended even if none of the guys they got in return amount to much of note. They took a chance on 3 lottery tickets for one season of Burnes, the Orioles got their one season of Burnes and 1 lottery ticket for losing him in FA.

In simple terms the Brewers preferred the 3 chances to land value as compensation for Burnes.

I find it interesting that Coby Mayo, the guy a lot of Brewers fans really wanted and Orioles fans vehemently did not want to give up, has struggled much more than Joey Ortiz has. That's not some huge consolation for the Brewers but Ortiz is at least a positive defensively.

Good post. I think it's right on. We all want the 80th or 90th percentile outcome on every trade. This one feels more like the 50th, though folks can think it's slightly better or slightly worse, and I won't argue one bit.

Ortiz has been a serviceable infielder, often at the premium position, for 2+ years. It's a shame he hasn't been able to come close to 2024's 102 OPS+. Even an 85 there changes everyone's evaluation. I think he'll probably have to turn it around soon to keep earning PAs over Pratt, but I'll be rooting for him quite a bit over the next month or so. I've genuinely liked the guy since we acquired him.

Edit: And I forgot about Blake Burke, so thanks to the folks who pointed that out.
