I am way more interested in adding Yordan Alveraz from Astros. They will be selling and rebuilding. A dh is not as costly as a number 1 starting pitcher.

Yordan will be an interesting case come the trade deadline. Yes, he's a DH.....but also a guy that's probably going to be on pace to hit around 50 home runs if he stays healthy. He also will have 2.5 years of team control until he hits FA.....but not at a real cheap price either. Looks like he's making about $27M this year and the same salary the next two seasons. For us to get involved in a guy like Yordan, there's no doubt that the Stros would have to pay down some of that salary, which would then only increase the trade package going back to them.  On top of that, we have Yeli who's already occupying that DH role most nights. So, I HIGHLY doubt we're going to be a player for Yordan come July.....for several different reasons.

I wonder if some of this depends on extensions and the new CBA.  This might be a little bit of a reach, but if the Brewers have some sort of a framework in place to extend either Contreras or Turang, I think they have the capital needed to be a player in the Skubal situation.

Another player in great demand that’s likely to elicit a bidding war — so no thanks.

We don’t “need” Skubal or Ryan to win a title. We have the postseason big 3 with Miz-Harrison-Woodruff. Henderson makes a nice 4.

Spend the prospect capital on HL bullpen arm/s.

I like the optimism but I think you'd feel pretty silly if you go into an elimination game and Woody comes out throwing 88 MPH fastballs.

It'd be interesting to go back and compare with CC, that's the clear analog here. Yes, Brantley had a good career, but would you take back that trade? I bet most everyone says no, that was legendary.

LA showed us what having a shutdown pitching staff can do. This year could be the same thing all over again. Maybe Woodruff will be ok, but Skubal is the type of talent that should make one think seriously about it, and the fact that the system is so stacked should make it even more palatable to do so.

Is it going to hurt? Of course. There would probably be someone going back who will have 3-5+ years of success. Otherwise why would Detroit do it? I tend to lean more "bites" than "all-in" approach philosophically, but that three-headed monster in October would be awfully compelling.

Ultimately I'll trust that Arnold isn't going to do something stupid, and if he doesn't pull the trigger, it's because the asking price was crazy. If he does, then I'll enjoy the heck out of it.

Are we certain they're going to be looking to move him? Everybody seems to think so. HOU is only 6 games out, albeit in 4th place currently. But we just hit June.

Just saw one of the national insiders on twitter say a FO exec told them there's no chance Alvarez gets traded this year.

I think we have to throw in Harrison and that gets it done for sure

When the Yankees or Dodgers invetably unload their minor leagues and snap him up, it will only further cement the disparity of this system. When all baseball knows the Brewers are in position and needing him most and we want to see someone else with a crack at the title, but it still doesnt make sense as a small market team...

I’d be all in on that MLB Network package of Lara/Jett/Letson for Skubal if that’s what it took. Not having to include any of Made/Pena/Pratt/Fischer would be great. They’ll have other OFers really popping on the scene soon and some already are (Adamczewski, Payne, Frias, Encarnacion, Antunez, Ragsdale, etc).

In terms of the OF outlook: You already have Chourio locked down into the 2030s. Sal and Mitchell could be on their way out after this year if they keep playing bad but I could stomach giving Sal another chance next year. Lockridge could be flipped as part of a trade if he does well to end the year otherwise can bring him back as 5th OFer. Mitchell especially if he does well to end the year is an easy sell high trade candidate since his body is always a ticking time bomb. Otherwise still a decent 3rd/4th OFer option next year. Hypothetically Lara should take Mitchell’s CF starting spot for opening day next year but I’m still fine trading Lara for Skubal. Also if this lockout does happen, they have the 2026 and 2027 drafts (assuming there’s still a draft then?) in the downtime if they want to replace Jett and Lara with a few college OFers ready to debut maybe already in 2028. Adamczewski and Payne should be ready to debut in 2028 after a lockout. So even if you trade Lara and Jett, OF depth shouldn’t be any issue.

If we want a "big name" starter, why not target Joe Ryan?

Is it really a big name though? Compared to what?

Like 7 letters? Come on! 3 syllables is good efficiency with such a short name, but even so, I don't see how you could call it a big name. He's no Simeon Woods Richardson.

Not familiar with this YT channel but this guy says he's a Player Development Anaylist that has worked with the Marquee Sports Network and for MLB Network, so possibly that lends credence to his presentation here.

This video is presenting trade packages for multiple teams to get Skubal, seems well thought out. He presents packages for 8 teams I think, including the Brewers. Maybe some will feel that's interesting enough.

Spoiler alert, his Brewers package is exactly what @JoeyWiemerTrutherposted above (Jett Williams, Lara, Letson) but he says he's worked for MLB Network and that's where JWT said he was getting that from so maybe this guy was behind that?

Yes this is Lance. He was on MLB Network talking about this stuff earlier this week.

I wasn't sure if he did in front of camera work or was a behind the scenes guy but he seemed legit. Thanks for confirming.

He does some TV segments for Marquee as well. I really like his youtube channel.

The appeal of Skubal is that he's LH.  When you're trying to get to the WS and you have to go through:

Ohtani
Freeman
Muncy
Tucker
Schwarber
Harper

Skubal has that much more value.

I'd do Jett/Lara/Letson, so long as Letson is in a PTBNL group that is based on Skubal's health and how far the Brewers make it in the playoffs.  I think any deal for Skubal has to include one or two PTBNLs with a couple of tiers of players because of his health.

I really like this thinking and aligning the ultimate package to health.

that would be catastrophic for us to trade three great prospects and then the anti-Sabathia happens and Skubal only lasts 1-2 starts
