Yeah, he's a good guy to love to hate, but until he hurts us, I'm just glad we have kept him in check.

He's this Cubs team's Javy Baez - good player that becomes overrated based on his on-field antics/flair.  I think some of it for me with PCA is he fits the mold of the stereotypical Perfect Game travel ball showcase clown that has to make sure he's the prettiest peacock in the ballpark at all times.

 

The Brewers have proven that the "book" on him offensively hasn't really changed - he's been their worst hitter against Milwaukee this season. i have been surprised by the pop he's developed this season pushing 40 HRs, so credit to him in that regard.

I was going to push back that PCA is way better than Baez was but Javy had 6.8 and 6.7 bWAR seasons back-to-back so the delta isn’t as much as one would think unless PCA gets hot again and makes it to 10 WAR.

I don't think too much about PCA. Think he looks like someone you'd see in an episode of Full House, the 'bad boy' who smokes cigarettes circa that time period. But that's about it.

The dream scenario would be that we beat the Cubs enough in the next week to eventually knock them down to the 6 line and put them up against ATL/LAD in the WC. 

It's not about depth, it is about having high end pitching. Elite starter and high leverage relievers to lockdown the 7/8/9 is much more consistent and favorable over slugging in a short series. I would not want to face the Phillies in the wild card round.

not to mention, a significant chunk of PCA's lofty WAR comes from defensive OF metrics that I think way overinflate player value - even compared to just infield defense.  Don't get me wrong, I do think he's a great player - I just hate him because he's on the Cubs and he fits the personality mold of many of the most annoying Cub fans I lived around while in the Chicago area from college through my young professional life.

To me its just the dumb jock bro vibe he gives off that annoys me.   Prior to this year I didn't think much due to his offense being blah. He sucked on O to finish last year and started out trash this year. So I thought his 1H last year was a fluke.  But after whatever date his turnaround started this year he's been neer Bonds level on O, while being elite at D. So its not like war type stuff is purely from D.   I'm still not convinced his O can't be brought down by smarter pitching as he does still seem to chase too much. But this has been going on long enough that you have to respect it as real.

He's been great - but nowhere near Bonds level.  PCA still sees more than 1 strike a game and honestly doesn't get pitched around even when he's been on HR binges

fWAR maybe but DRS isn't as high on PCA's defense so that's not true of bWAR

That’s not 100% accurate. If the Cubs win the 4 remaining games against the Brewers they would take the tiebreaker. So, if the Brewers would go 6-12 in their other games to finish 93-69, the Cubs would take the division.by going 11-7 in their other 18 games. 

it’s the longest of long shots, but for the Cubs to overtake the Brewers they would probably need an out of the blue winning streak like the 17 game streak the Cardinals had in 2021 to charge into a wild card spot.

Since late May he as like a 1.1 OPS.  Its genuinely crazy and much closer to that freak bonds level than people realize. ANd if I remember right June/July area he was like 1.3 or something even crazier.   But yes, obviously much more easily done since he's not massively pitched around (though being pitched around so much to automatically give a .450 OBP is a bit of 'cheat' on ops). But, pitching is also much more difficult to hit now than it was then.   

But yea while I respect it as real at this point, there's no way I expect him to be a consistent 1.1+ ops with 50+ HR and 45 SB type from here out which is what his late May til now pace would be

I'm not disagreeing, but you understand it's to get he, Vaughn and Yelich in the batting lineup. The calculus has to be that those 3 in the lineup is worth more than Bauers' defensive adventures in RF. Gonna have to put up with this or only two of those can play.

In most environments I agree but OF is very tough to play in Wrigley with the wind. Bauers has really struggled on pretty much every ball hit his way in this series and with Henderson and his FB tendencies on the mound you can probably expect more flyballs hit his way today.
