I read this report wasnt accurate... Leonhard hasnt made decision if staying or not.

Yeah, it sounds like he's still trying to figure it out.

I'm still thinking he coaches in the state next year...just not sure if that's at Wisconsin.

OG-Michael Furtney and DE-Tristan Monday in the transfer portal.

RB-Jaquez Keyes also decommitted.  He was the last of the Badgers 4-star recruits according to Rivals.  The Badgers class is now down to just 8 incoming freshmen.

According to McNamara, the Badgers have 15 scholarships open, 14 open if Herbig returns.

Oklahoma State's quarterback has also entered the transfer portal, so both teams will be playing with backup QBs.  Oklahoma State's backup, Garret Rangel, started the team's last game and was 18/42 for 178 yards, 0 TD/0 INT and took 4 sacks (at least 0 INTs, which probably makes him better than Bucky's former QB).

Guerendo, Semar Melvin, and Jaylan Franklin enter the portal. Lotta turnover on the roster.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Over 700 players reportedly entered the portal on Monday.  That was just Monday, not including today or grad transfers/coaching changes who entered before Monday.  With only 131 FBS teams, you can do the math on how many per team entered.

its ruining college football IMHO. You should be allowed to go if their is a coaching change without penalty. I'm Ok with getting to go once with penalty. I just think college football is better if players stay for their full 3-5 years where they started.

I get college football i not the same sport is was 5 years ago, and this is the next iteration, but I don't this will help grow the sport.

Lest we forget, there's a double-stacked COVID influence on the current portal numbers:

- Teams made decisions on players without as much data, resulting in a worse-than-normal high school scouting process.

- Players received an extra year of eligibility, meaning players at the bottom of the depth chart have that much more incentive to find places where they might actually play.

It's like the NFL but free agency every year! Yay?

you get 1 free transfer, I believe. I'm torn. If I am a band student, I can go from school to school and its no big deal, why shouldn't athletes have the same freedoms. That being said, have bowl games where teams have have their starters in the transfer portal, can' t be good for the sport.

Most band students aren't on scholarships, and if they are, they likely lose that scholarship if they transfer unless the new school offers them a similar financial aid package.

I thought the same thing, then I wondered how much of it has to do with students needed to go through admissions and enrollment in their new schools to start in the spring semester.  Obviously every university has a different timeline, but most students are already enrolled in their spring courses.  They need to get that taken care of pretty quickly.

Degree seeking students aren't that free to transfer. Which is to say beyond freshmen year in many cases you are going to run into logistics hurdles if you transfer and making sure you can finish as quickly as your original school. Which is both the double hit on the opportunity cost as well as the tuition hit for the majority.

Transfers are getting pretty cringe. It is filled with a bunch of dudes who have already decommitted before ever getting to college, then transferring again before ever playing in a game, and are now off to another school. A bunch of guys running for the hills because they got a new coach and probably didn’t even look up anything about the new coach before doing so. Most are honestly scrubs that should focus on their education, instead of university hopping every year.

I honestly wonder how some of these guys do once they get into the real world. “After learning of my district managers retirement, I am announcing that I have entered the job market portal.”

This is not entirely true.  Depending on the school it is extremely easy to transfer.  Transferring from UW-Madison to UW-Milwaukee absolutely nothing changes.  If you are transferring from a private school to a public school or public to private like UW-Milwaukee to Marquette then yeah you could have some logistical issues though that maybe a semester at most.  This isn't the 1950's or 1970's anymore majority of schools have the same classes and as long as you are transferring from a school that is in the same standard as the one you are transferring to or the one you are transferring from has a higher standard then you are perfectly fine.

I did this as a junior I went from private to public and I graduated in the same time frame.

Leonhard posted on Twitter he will coach through the bowl game and then will be leaving Wisconsin.  Guess the reports he was staying were a bit premature.

And hopefully coaching in Green Bay starting late January

That was always the most expected outcome imho. If you are the interim boss and you get passed over, you have to leave. Just common sense

I think it’s hard to go from no nfl coaching experience to a coordinator. Maybe he can do it and Barry is definitely gone, but I don’t think Leonhard is the answer

Lafleur apparently thought he was a couple years ago when he tried to hire him. I think the job is Leonhard's if he wants it. Right now Leonhard could probably get a decent head coaching job at a lower-end BCS school, but if he were to go in and turn that Packers defense around, he would have the choice of pretty much whatever job he wanted, college or NFL.

Extremely likely the Packers have checked in with JL again and him staying on through the bowl would be a hopeful sign.

I think JL to GB has legs for two reasons, assuming that Barry is indeed on his way out.

1) He has a young family that he has consistently said he doesn't want to uproot and which is a large part of the reason why he's stayed in Madison despite other job offers. Now that staying in Madison is no longer an option, the next closest option is obviously Green Bay. In fact, his family could probably keep living in Madison if he took the Packers' D-Coordinator job.

2) He's committed to coaching in Madison through the bowl game. Other college football programs and coaches are unlikely to wait that long given how the transfer portal and recruiting season are now in full swing.

This also isn't entirely true. I had one daughter transfer from La Crosse to Milwaukee for nursing and not all nursing related credits transferred.  I also know other students that had the same issue transferring from Oshkosh to Green Bay for example.

There are parameters around the transfer, but I think it is easier than it was.  It depends on the field of study, and how much of a money grab is involved.

Yah, transferring still isn't a crisp process. I don't think I knew anyone who transferred and had all their classes transfer. I can imagine in these large programs that run 'generous' classes targeted towards athletes, those probably don't transfer to other schools very well.

There is still so much variance in what classes colleges require as Gen Eds and/or for majors.

What happens to those who enter the Portal and do not sign?  If that was covered in the previous 25 pages, I apologize ?

i would imagine, you either see if you can go back to your old team or you wait out a year. I never thought of that.

I came across some information on that recently.  The number of transfers that find a new school is only somewhere around 50%. Your original team can, but has no obligation, to take you back as I understand it.  Seems like it is a risk for certain players

I thought I heard that UW-Whitewater's coach was retiring.  I'm not sure if that should be blue or not... DIII program, but a long term winning program.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."
