Rule V Draft: Brewers select Gus Varland

Varland has experienced two consecutive difficult seasons on the mound finishing each season with an ERA well above 5.00. After working almost exclusively as a starter prior to 2022, the Dodgers moved Varland to the bullpen in late May. His results improved, as did the velocity on his fastball and slider. While Varland’s fastball was sitting 93-95 mph as a starter in April and May, he was sitting 96-97 mph and touching 98 mph out of the bullpen in September. His slider jumped from sitting 84-86 mph to sitting 88-90 mph by September. This jump in velocity culminated in a strong finish to Varland’s season. Over his final 14 appearances Varland went 3-0 with a 3.44 ERA and 31 strikeouts to five walks over 18.1 innings. With two major league-caliber pitches, years of high-minors experience and a defined role, Varland could fit into a major league bullpen and stick. There’s plenty of buzz around Varland as a potential Rule 5 selection.

I don’t know. Maybe they don’t have 40 players better. But teams who seem themselves as contenders don’t typically dabble with Rule 5 picks.

Pure nonsense. The Phillies, Padres, Cardinals, Mariners and Mets literally made selections themselves, all of whom were also pitchers.

Some of these picks end up being "traded" to the picking team so he can be optioned to the minors. Could be AAA depth option if he doesn't show enough in Spring training and a deal can be worked out.

The Crew took 2 players.  One in the MLB portion & another in the AAA portion of the draft.

No other team took a player that MKE left exposed for the taking (& the Phillies selected a combined 8 players themselves).

Its clear the MKE system has some very good individual talents, but could this be a subtle indication that the overall system is not as strong or as deep and many MKE fans would like to believe??

5 playoff teams made a selection.

There's a difference between making a Rule 5 picks and stashing a struggling Rule 5 pick on the 25-man roster all season. Nothing wrong with taking a flier on a high-upside pick that the team thinks they can fix somehow. In the last Rule 5 draft the Red Sox landed Garett Whitlock, for example.

Or it could be that the players  Brewer fans are excited about weren’t eligible to be drafted……..

It’s not deep with pitching, which is where the picks come from. Positionally the farm is strong, especially at AAA.

Also their best prospects are recent draft-picks & IFA signings. Their amateur talent procurement departments are every bit the equal of Cleveland’s at this time, and because of that they should have a farm system that rivals your teams in a couple of years.

Don’t read too much into the rule 5 draft. It doesn’t tell you anything about he farm. It’s mostly teams picking up $1 lottery tickets and occasionally winning $2.

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

Lol at some reactions. Gus is more likely returned to LA before Opening day than he is making it to. You'll get to see him in Spring Training games. What his results are out of the bullpen there, will go in to determining which outcome.

Just watch that arm for that late Spring Training injury that will take a month or so to rehab in the minors before it surprisingly gets better just as the Brewers have an opening in the 'pen.

Good rule 5 draft, didn't lose Devanney and get to look at a high potential arm. Odds are we lose him and who really cares but maybe he pans out.

I swear every time the Brewers select someone in the rule V draft it is the same people complaining and overreacting to it.

Truth be told, it's largely the same people complaining and overreacting to every move the Brewers make period.
