Some thoughts as the Brewers surrender first place in the division to the Pirates.

It’s been a good 3 weeks but there are some signs of problems on the horizon. For one, while the offense has been better than I expected so far, I’m not ready to change my preseason expectation that when the dust settles the offense is going to be near or below league average. There are too many holes in the lineup and signs that the rookies are going to have the expected growing pains.

For the Brewers to remain competitive for a playoff spot they need to have elite pitching. They’ve generally gotten it so far, but the injuries to starters are going to take their toll as more starts go to minor league caliber pitchers and the bullpen (which has question marks of its own) has to cover more innings.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Guerra is the one who needs to be DFA’d tomorrow morning. Guy has literally never been a productive MLB pitcher.

He is going to finish this last inning no matter how many runs he gives up.  He is definitely throwing his last inning as a Brewer.

Bush is the problem because we are putting him in high leverage situations. I don't know who would replace him other than Uribe.

Too bad the budget wouldn't stretch for Suter and his franchise-crippling $3M salary.

Suter is a low leverage reliever and was replaced by Wilson who has been better than him this year.

50/50, Wouldn't surprise me if they did nothing.

I imagine that's the last time Guerra will be walking off a big league mound.

Yeah I would be shocked if he was on the active roster tomorrow. Maybe the IL him instead of DFA but that was very "let his arm fall off because he won't be in the pen tomorrow" energy that inning.

Bush as setup guy was never going to work.  His fastball is as straight as a string.  They really need Cousins to rediscover his groove.

If he still had upper 90s velocity it might work.  With his velocity drop he shouldn't be kept around.

Yeah I was surprised they even kept him on the roster.  He hadn't pitched in over a week, clearly Counsell had no faith in him and wasn't going to use him until he had to.

What in baseball gods' green outfield grass happened?!? I've been painting a bathroom all morning. I step out after the first coat is finished (finally) and I see we gave up a 9-spot?!? Good grief.

No sense in defending Bushs' outing today, obviously. I was pulling for him because he's filling an important role--whether it's the 7th or 8th--and there aren't a lot of other options. Varland looked promising but isn't available right now. Cousins needs to re-establish himself. Houser is being stretched out. Peguero had a nice day but you certainly need to see more. Despite what happened when we acquired Adames, substantial trades this time of year are rare. And no amount of struggling is going to make Cam Robinson or Uribe any more ready than they are (aren't).

Usually, when fans start b****ing about a reliever, it's a high-leverage guy who's had success or he wouldn't be in the role. Like it or not, teams give guys like that more opportunities to "get right" than fans would. Bush certainly needs to work ahead & locate much, much better. He was 0-1 to Turner & basically threw him a 3-0 pitch.

On a different topic-----it would be nice if your staff ace could take the mound w/o needing to take 50-some pitches to get his act together. The 8th inning rightfully overshadowed it but Burnes needs to be better.

Clayton Andrews is ready. He should be the call-up to Guerra’s DFA. Uribe’s getting closer, but probably needs a few more clean outings.

Andrews has had a nice start to his season. But he threw a total of about 10 innings for the organization all of last year. He's also left-handed, which brings into question exactly what they have in mind for him. JMO but I think there's more "prove it" innings in his future. If he continues to do well I could see him as another LH option but I don't know about anything more substantial.

I think Uribe is still a ways off but I'd love to be wrong about that.

Why do you think Uribe is a ways off?
