I wonder if this is indeed the case, it'd be interesting to hear from draft picks (although they may not be entirely unbiased at that point). Obviously you have the "prestige" teams, and the hometown favorites, but beyond that I do wonder if the Brewers are getting a good rep.

There has to be some merit to the idea I'd think. At the very least, they're not a team like...the Rockies who are just utterly clueless.

You'd have to have a pretty mature kid who was thinking big picture like that. I'd think athletes at this level would have a whole lot of confidence. The Rays, LAD, NYY, Cleveland, Houston vs the Rox, Angels, Pirates...etc...

Legitimately shocked by the dollar amounts here. Hopefully they can get a few more of the later picks signed

Pratt in particular. It really did seem like 2M was going to be pretty close to his asking price.

Leston, Adamczewski maybe? I'm curious what Gholston's price was. He already said he's not signing, but until the deadline passes, that option is still on the table.

I don't think anyone would have imagined we'd have ~1.43M to use on picks 11-20.

$1.43M to use on 7-20. We don't have the $ amounts for 7-10 yet so not sure what we have to work with for 11-20.

Right...forgot about that. That shouldn't change the total significantly. May add a bit, but 4 college arms, a couple guys who are relievers headed into pro-ball.

In any event, we're in a MUCH better position than I'd have thought after Pratt and Bitonti signed. That's a million more than I think most people would have guess yesterday.

Are you guys including the overage that a team could exceed its draft bonus pool without penalty??

Teams that exceed their bonus pool by 5% lose a pick in the next draft but a team could go 4.999999995% over without any penalty.   For years CLE has been to within a couple of bucks of its line to sign everyone it drafts.

------------------------------------------------------------

On another item ICYMI MLB changed the signing rules this year. Any player signed must be added to the domestic player development group within 15 days of being signed.  That group has a 180 player limit.

Yes that $1.43M number is a rounded version of the 5% overage space.

I love this draft and everything they did with it. I hope they find a way to use all their money though. I hate leaving equity on the table.

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

Our 5th round pick has a slot value of about $400,000.

We can probably throw that amount at 4 of these 11-20 guys.

Letson seems to be the obvious want, but Bjorn Johnson (Auburn) an Dylan Watts (Auburn) are both from the same area of Washington state. Seems like us (and Auburn) found something up there. Bjorn’s Twitter pic is even him in a Brewers jersey.

Letson, Bjorn, Watts, and Adamczewski would be nice. Take away two of those and throwing close to 3rd round money at Gholston wouldn’t be bad either. Have to think he wasn’t expecting that when reiterating his commitment to Oklahoma.

FWIW, the Brewers don't normally go above their pool.  I'm not sure when the last time they did, so it would be unusual if they do this year.  I thought for sure they would have to in order to sign Pratt and Bitonti, but obviously not.  So without the overage amount, they currently have $850k to sign 7-10 and the 11-20 players.  If you assume $200k-$300k for the 7-10 picks, that leaves $550-$650k for the rest.  That's still quite a bit.  Historically, the HS we have picked in this range were given a few hundred thousand to $0.5M (Caden Vire).  So, signing two more HS players is completely reasonable.  Very exciting draft!

Checked to see but couldn't confirm he played for Brewers Area Codes Team at some point. Must have, unless his high school's nickname is the Brewers!

Nice story from the spring here.

Luke Adams got 282.5k last year so most of those guys could sign for 300k-ish. Letson and Gholston maybe around 500k since they were ranked prospects.

Love the strategy and work done by the scouting department. Even if this draft falls flat on it's face, they have done their jobs adding talent.

Anyone got the full signing list for MKE??  Fingers crossed MKE gets the entire draft class signed (or as many as they really want)..

CLE has basically wrapped up its draft class signing 19 of the 21 selections.  Prep pitchers taken in rounds 16 & 20 very unlikely to sign at this point,  CLE has under $2300 remaining in its bonus pool (including the overage).

1st time since 2019 draft CLE has not signed its full draft class.

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong. I can’t remember signing an entire draft class in 10+ years, except I think there was a weird pandemic year where they only made 5 picks. I think they typically spend 1-2 months negotiating until it becomes clear who is not signing, or something like that, it takes awhile.

FYI, with the changes rules the signing deadline is during this upcoming week.  IIRC its 7/26/23.

Once the draft got shortened from 40 to 20 rounds, CLE has signed every pick each year until this one.  The 2020 pandemic year was 5 rounds but some teams like CLE & MKE still had Competitive balance pick so they drafted 6 players.

Except for the 2020 season, where we signed all five picks, we have not signed our entire draft class.  Remember, these drafts used to be 40-50 players in total.  That would have been a lot of picks.  I dont know how Cleveland does it, but its working for them.

Did MKE trade away is Competitive Balance pick in 2020??  I know they had done that a couple of times.

I'm trying to understand why MKE made only 5 picks that year instead of 6.

Is it just me or did INF Josh Adamczewski’s social media profiles used to indicate both Ball State and the Brewers, but now indicate only the Brewers?

He’s also been liking the Luke Adams’ award announcements on Twitter-X. Hope this all means he’s aboard the Crew.

RHP Hayden Robinson’s instagram account also has an @Brewers, but nothing for Nicholls State.
