Isn't this just the annual "waiver-trade" deadline, only dressed up like an actual story?  MLB teams routinely put players on the waiver wire around this time of year, with the ability to pull the player back if they can not find a trade partner.  We just rarely hear about the actual names.

Waiver trades are no longer a thing in the new CBA

Well, no. I don’t think those teams have any intention of pulling the player back, they can’t trade them. Teams at the bottom of the group of contenders like the twins or reds could conceivably get an entire new look to their pitching staff by claiming Clevenger and Giolito.

The commissioner looks like a complete fool for allowing this to happen. Teams on the cusp of contention should not be allowed to improve by picking these players up for free and I would feel the same way if the Brewers were able to improve this way.

Pretty sure nobody cares if Mark A pockets more money so no I don't think people here would be calling the Brewers genius for doing the same thing if the Brewers fell out of contention. More likely people would be calling the Brewers a poverty franchise, cheap ass and so forth.

Correct in the past you would put your entire team on waivers and pull back if you couldn’t work out a deal with the team that claimed in. This isn’t that, their run with the angles is over.

I find it weird that all this happen on the same day between a bunch of teams and relatively speaking the same time of day. Maybe it was just reported at the same time?

Players need to be on their new roster before Sept 1 to be postseason eligible. Releasing players on 8-29 means they will be claimed on 8/31 and eligible for post season on their new teams. Just a bunch of teams waited until the last possible moment.

Which angle are we talking about here? Acute? Obtuse? Kurt?

I guess I really don't see what the big deal is. None of these guys are real difference makers. Matt Moore is probably the best of the group and he's a reliever meaning over the next few weeks he could be lights out or total trash. I'm sure those players are glad to be getting away from that dumpster fire organization and into a playoff race anyway.

Lucas Giolito bWAR 2.1

Corbin Burnes bWAR 2.8

Mike Clevinger bWAR 2.9

I’d say those are impact starting pitchers who most assuredly will be joining a contending team this afternoon.

Elvis Peguero bWAR 0.8

Reynaldo Lopez bWAR 1.2

Matt Moore bWAR 1.7

Likewise a couple of quality bullpen arms will be on the move today.

I agree with you on the hitters: Bader and Renfroe are mediocre ball players to begin with and are having bad years.

Who would've thought Jordan Lyles would've been so huge for us a few years ago.  Of course these guys could flop but they could also catch a hot streak at the right time, get helped by new coaches, just get refocused on a good team/better environment, etc.

Lyles would be another one that owes MKE a cut of his pay

@patrickgpe came up with acute title for this thread. I don’t think I’m being obtuse when I say that’s just not right.

in my haste to post I just realized my typo, fixed now

Fan graphs has some articles on it. It was the last day they could do this and let the players play in the playoffs.

It looks like the consensus in the industry is every single meaningful player is going to get scooped up by a fringe playoff hopeful way before they get to MKE. Even an expensive player is a cheap rental in this deal and if you look at the fringe playoff teams like Miami they can certainly upgrade their 25th and 26th best players here.

Totally agree on this. I doubt any of these guys make it to a team currently in a playoff spot. I wouldn't even be surprised if some trash team like Colorado claims one of these guys because, well, they have no idea what they're doing.

I'd be calling them smart...if it got them under the luxury tax line and meant they got a 1st for Ohtani.

This move...is a smart move by the Angels. It's...EVERY other decision the Angels have made leading them to this place.

Why keep a bunch of players who won't be here next year, cost money and will only give us a worse pick(if they do anything) and again, impact where our compensation pick will be?

The Yankees are doing pretty much the same thing, they just didn't give up prospects to add more rentals. This doesn't seem briliant so much as...obvious. If you're close to the luxury tax, obviously you do this. And again, what rational reason is the Commish going to give? Some fringe playoff teams are going to get a few marginal upgrades? But that's part of the rules. They added salary a month ago through the means available to them, not they've gone 8-18 or whatever, and they're cutting it.

Manfred should void this. Such blatant salary dumping that messes with the playoff race should be illegal.

Still trying to figure out how this is fine (or at least accepted), but the waiver trade month was a problem.  Seems that was way healthier than a last day of month waiver free-for-all in which teams on the fringe of the race with one month to go get dibs over those who played better than them to this point.

I would guess the Twins would be the first team to be active.   I would think Giolito and Moore would fit into their plans.

Edit:  I see the Reds are ahead of the Twins.  They'll be active too .

I agree, this one more is smart, but to give up the few prospects that you had to go all in at the trade deadline because of a hot streak or not just getting as much as you can for Ohtani wasn't. All of your acquisitions that you made to go "all-in" are now going to be picked up today for free.

When do they announce where the players are going?

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."
