Orioles Acquire Corbin Burnes for INF Joey Ortiz, LHP DL Hall and 2024 Competitive Balance Pick

Posted

If we were planning to compete this year, which the Hoskins signing indicates, I wonder what will happen to the rotation. Peralta, Miley, Rea, Ross, Gasser/Ashby if healthy is far from what we need to compete. SP2 is an ageing guy who is unlikely to make 25+ starts, SP3 was on the AAA shuttle last year, SP4 basically hasn't pitched in a year

This trade comes down to whether you think Ortiz will hit and Hall will start. If you do, it’s a good deal. If not, it is underwhelming. It was unlikely they were getting a top-30 type unless some team really panicked.

But I was told countless number of times that Burnes would cost at least one top 30 plus more!

As history has shown time and time again, this may not be the last deal.  They could easily flip prospects for a starter to replace Burnes.  They just knew that Burnes was going to be gone after the season.

It was either one season of Burnes + a comp pick, or Burnes for a comp pick + Ortiz + Hall.

All year: If the Brewers don't trade Burnes it's an embarrassment

Brewers trade Burnes for a fair return: This is all they're getting??

lol, I think a lot of people had unrealistic expectations on a possible Burnes return. We'll see how this goes, I'm just surprised they decided to do it so late in the offseason right after plugging their biggest hole on the roster.

Let's see what happens next! Adames trade? Free agent pitcher signing? Nothing?

I just don’t like the players coming back.  Value wise it is correct.  I just don’t like Hall or Ortiz.

Adames' contract is expiring after this season....BT unlikely hit enough for SS. We have no one other than EBJ in the upper minors. I actually like Ortiz.

With Hall, we very well could have just added the next Hader...

They basically just got the pick they would have acquired had they not moved Burnes, plus two top 100 prospects. Again, good deal.

Hall seems unlikely to start unless the Orioles are just bad at pitcher development. Ortiz has had his chances. I get the upside is high, it's like we traded burnes for 2 keston hiuras. Fire this GM please, dude is freaking clueless

I wish I had known this before renewing my 10 pack for this season.

Contreras not thrilled

He should be happy.  A contending team can trade a tonka truck for him.  Used probably.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

Burnes last three years…

35.6 to 30.5 to 25.5 on K%.

5.2 to 6.4 to 8.4 on BB%.

0.38 to 1.02 to 1.02 on HR9.

1.63 to 3.14 to 3.81 on FIP.

2.43 to 2.94 to 3.39 on ERA.

6.3 to 5.3 to 4.8 on rWAR.

7.5 to 4.6 to 3:4 on fWAR.

Corbin has regressed pretty hard two years in a row across the board with only one year of control remaining.

That’s why Mayo has a higher surplus value on BTV and was always a pipedream.

Well, they haven't exactly been good at it.  See: Cody Sedlock, Hunter Harvey, Dylan Bundy.  Gausman didn't really do anything until he left.

This is why comp picks are meaningless. No telling who they will get. Bust potential is high regardless.

Trading 1 year of a player always brings back a lower return. The Brewers got 12 years of control on two top 100 prospects & a late 1st round pick. Having Burnes for next year would have been fun but for the long term health of the Brewers this is a good trade.
