Man when I saw Chourio was going to get to that ball I thought Canha was going to be dead to rights at the plate and it wasn't even close..

Poor throw by Chourio. Needed to get it there on 1 hop or less.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Bryse Joins Freddy on the terribly disappointing starters list

I certainly hope we add some quality starters soon & say goodbye to overweight journeymen pitchers like Wilson

Bryse is not a starter. He excelled at long relief last year because that is who he is. He was thrusted into a starter role thanks to injuries.

Not too upset if the Crew ends up losing today, but I wonder about Wilson as an SP. I get that we don't have a lot of options right now, but it seems clear it's a square peg situation. It's not even that he's been bad (he hasn't). It's just that you go out there with every Wilson start just sort of hoping he can push through five and have a great first two trips through the order. He'd be my first move to the pen if we can get some guys back healthy.

Did Perkins not get the memo that bunting isn't allowed? What a dirty player...

Here we go again. He has been above average by most metrics this year and has saved us a bit considering he isn't suppose to be starting.

Kind of the theme of our rotation, both due to how it was set up and compounded by injuries.    Wilson is a good long man out of the pen but is being asked to be a #3.  Freddy is a #2 when he's right, and is being asked to be #1A.  We've gotten lucky that Rea was a #6 last year and has been promoted to #2 and managed to essentially pitch like one.

With last year’s rotation, we may have Philly’s record

Wilson just isn't a SP. You can't be as bad as he is against LHH and be in an MLB rotation. OPS was .958 against LHH coming into today. Need to get him back into the bullpen where he can be more protected against LHH.

I give Wilson a lot of credit for managing this role really well overall. Mostly, I hope we're in a position to move him back into his best role very soon, especially since his last 5 starts have been worse than his first several. Worried about the trendline there, and he's very valuable as a guy you ask to get 6-10 outs instead of 15.

It's strange that I prefer Myers as a starter at this point. I think Wilson is for sure the better pitcher. But I think Myers seems more suited to regularly keeping you in the game for 4-6 innings long term.

Of course, it's not looking great against Skubal, so maybe nobody keeps the Crew in the game today.

and we wouldn't have Joey Ortiz - who has a higher WAR than Burnes this year.

I'd never heard of this dude prior to this season.  Looked at his B-R.com page and saw that he was drafted twice out of college, the second time being in the 9th round, so I thought he was a senior sign/budget pick.

Nope.  Signed for a well-over-slot $350K.  How player get drafted twice out of college, the second time in the 9th round, and sign for well over slot?

Skubal’s dad is the principal in the school that I work.  Fun fact for today!

I’d prefer if Wilson was a long man, that’s his ideal role, but circumstance has dictated otherwise.

Hard for me to complain too much about him putting up a 3.09 ERA over 43.2 IP in the nine games he was the “starter” prior to today.

He’s been put in a tough position and done his job and then some even if the ERA has been lucky or smoke & mirrors  or Brewers FIP beating wizardry or whatever one wants to chalk it up to.

He’d only have one run today if Turang took the out at first.

I know the Tigers have been pretty decent this year (good for them--I'm a Central division fan, whether the NL or the AL, and I think the Royals are definitely my 2nd favorite MLB team), but Canha as your #3 hitter is tough. I like the guy, but tough to really score when you're lineup looks like that.

Skubal can be a free agent after the 2026 season.  And if he stays healthy and keeps pitching great, he's going to make gobs of money.  So the Tigers have a predicament...do you give him a contract extension now (or after this season), or trade him before he hits free agency in two years?

Yeah, that's a tough choice. Given injury rates, I'd be real hesitant to do an extension. I could see an argument for either just keeping him like we seem to be doing with Willy, or trading him sooner than later.

Wilson’s best role is long relief when we are down 3-4 runs

Otherwise, he doesn’t fit on a good team’s roster

I don't get the Wilson hate at all. He is making peanuts and keeps us in pretty much every game he pitches. Would we be better if he was the long man again? Sure but he is performing just fine.

Yeah, Kerry Carpenter (129 wRC+ | 3.7 WAR over 735 PAs since 2022) and Riley Greene (111 wRC+ | 4.6 WAR over 1,102 PAs since 2022) have been their only real hits on the position player side and Carpenter is out with a lumbar spine stress fracture.

#1 overall pick Spencer Torkleson was supposed to be a guy but has a 91 wRC+ and -0.3 WAR for his career and was just sent down to AAA, resulting in Keston Hiura’s release.

Kind of the way I feel, too. He's forced into a role he probably shouldn't be in and he's still keeping us in games. Lately it seems as though the offense hasn't been scoring much for his starts so his mistakes are magnified.
