I was wondering if it was that Tyler Jay.  Turns out it is.  Can't believe he's 30 already, and that this was the first year he made it to the majors.

So, what in the world are the Brewers going to do with him?

See if the Brewers' lefty reliever reclamation factory can churn out another one. I like Shook, but with as deep as that Biloxi pitching staff is, he was kind of stuck in double-A.

Best of luck to 'The Shookster'. He has the tools. His development will ultimately come down to accuracy in and around the zone - can he be consistent with his best stuff on a more consistent basis? When he is dialed, he is very very good. He simply lacks the polish of consistently putting his best foot forward. The Mets get a Swiss army knife pitching prospect. Still just 26 years old, he has filled any number of roles for the Shuckers the past two seasons. Starter; long relief; short relief. You name it, he can give you those innings. It's a sad day in my Man Cave. I wish him all the best. I personally feel his best days are ahead of him - I truly believe that having watched his entire career. In my book, it certainly feels like the Brewers sold Low on his tools. The Brewers love those fringe end-of-40-Man arms. Jay enters that rotation.

I want to be cautious with judgement until the trade deadline passes (no move happens in a vacuum). And I don’t want to hug prospects at the expense of the playoffs.

However, I don’t understand why they believe this guy is worth a 40-man spot on July 21. Much less on whatever day Hall, Williams, and Ross are off the IL.

Same. I see this trade and my only thought is "well, can't wait for whatever happens next because... peculiar"

Maybe they don’t believe he’s worth a 40 man spot long term, but what did they give up? An undrafted 26 year old SP who is repeating AA and walking 4 bb/9 in the minors. Literally it’s a warm body for someone who they might need on the 26 man roster for a week or so

I don’t know what moves they are going to make, but Jay has 3 options, so at least they wouldn’t have to try to keep him up.

The biggest winners in this deal might be the players. Jay goes to a team that has revitalized the careers of a number of lefty relievers lately while Shook goes to a team that might have less of a backlog of pitchers awaiting a promotion to triple-A.

I believe they will have to make a choice between Z and Milner with the guy on the outside leaving the org because both are out of options (could be wrong on that) and they need to back fill that.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

I believe Milner will get traded or dfa'd before the deadline. I've felt that way for weeks. (Yes I'm aware his peripherals are decent). Zas and Koenig make him expendable. Even if not I see him get on tendered as I don't see the Brewers wanting to give him another raise.

He was drafted in 2015 so he would have needed to use an option in 2019, correct?

I don’t know, I was just going off of Fangraphs and forgot to cite my source.

If he was drafted in 2015 out of college at 21 then he would have needed to be added to the 40-man after the 2018 season and then optioned to the minors at the beginning of the 2019 season.  Unless they chose not to protect him, which I doubt with him being the 6th overall pick in the draft 3.5 years prior.

In 2020 he was released before the season started, so no option used.  By my count, he should have two options remaining.

My guess is that he's getting a brief audition (or selling him on staying with the org after getting DFA'd) prior to Williams/Ross/Hall needing to be activated.

Just an arm to use for a few innings. Think I read he went 4IP on debut. Then was bad.  I would guess he was to be one of those get called up for 1 start that gets them whatever doing so via insurance or what not.  Did so well, the Mets had to keep 1 more game.  Jay will get 1 or 2 appearances before let go which is probably more appearances that who they gave in return.

He wasn’t. (You have to scroll down a ways, but Jay is listed as available in the 2018 rule 5 draft.)

Seems like a candidate to move to an RP role instead of struggling as an SP?

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

Joseph,

I am TJ’s dad and I wanted to take a moment and say Thank you for all the coverage you and your team gave TJ while he was a Brewer.  You had many kind words for him.  It is bittersweet as I loved the Brewers for giving him his first opportunity as a professional baseball player.  They have been instrumental in his development as a pitcher and I appreciate everything they did for him.  I was hoping he could make his debut with the Brewers one day.  Keep up the good work on covering the Brew Crew!  Our family will always be grateful and proud to have been Brewers!

Another weird "let's overpay for a guy for no real reason" situation.  Shook has an incredible future, Jay just doesn't.  This is a head scratcher, and irritating.
