Civale is capable of being useful. He was productive in 2019, 2021 and 2023. I tend to agree that Civale is not a major liability in Milwaukee nor has he been an irreplaceable asset either. Civale was fine last year, too.

Civale’s kinda fun with how he goes about his business. He’s up to 96 IP with MIL and there are 190 pitchers with at least 100 IP going back to last year.

First thing that jumps out is all the bombs. Civale’s 156 HR+ would slot in at 182nd.

Though that is partly a function of all the fly balls. Civale’s 128 FB+ would slot in at 6th.

Strikeouts (93 K+), Walks (96 BB+), Hits (98 AVG+), Base Runners (97 WHIP+) are all pretty middling.

As you may have surmised that all shakes out to a pretty ugly 121 FIP- that would slot in at 172nd.

So how has he managed to keep runs off the board (94 ERA- would slot in 82nd) at an above average rate with the Brewers?

When all those fly balls aren’t sailing over the fence they result in a low 89 BABIP+ (26th) and high strand rate with a 114 LOB+ (10th).

Woody transferred to 60 day to make room

Makes sense. It was going to be him or Mitchell. Pitcher-for-pitcher is sensible

The main reason is it’s easier to control his workload in the lower stakes environs of AAA than it is in the fighting for a playoff spot MLB.

After 97 IP last year I’d guess they want to keep Misio around 130 or so this year. With 63 IP already under his belt let’s say that leaves around 70 yet to throw.

That’s fourteen starts at five innings each, but there are still eighteen trips through a five man rotation after Thursday. I guess 18 x 4 gets you to 72 too.

The math more or less dictates that it will take some degree of creativity to have Misio pitching meaningful innings in Sept (& hopefully Oct).

Think the thought process would be something like giving him a mini breather here for the rest of June/July (extra days / lower innings in AAA) sets him up better to help the MLB team down the stretch (& hopefully beyond) after a spot or two open up at the deadline.

I think they'd switch the bullpen duty at some point before sending him down if innings is the concern. They've done that in the past with Woody and Burnes so it seems like something they'd try again. I get the idea of sending him down if he was not quite ready but it appears they think he is given they're making room for him in a crowded starting rotation and a 40 man spot.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

It just occurred to me that it probably is not coincidental that they are calling him up for the Cardinals series, given that they are a half game back of the Cardinals for 2nd place in the division and need to leapfrog the Cardinals eventually to have a shot at a wild card spot.

I guess the biggest surprise to me with Civale is how quickly he and his agent pulled the trigger on the trade request as it seems. I understand the Brewers could have been talking to him this entire time and letting him know he was the odd man out no matter who it is that comes back or something like that...

But I would think if Miz gets lit up in his first start or two that they would send him back down and Civale would be right back in the rotation in a week's time.. But now I'm not sure if that would happen given the sequence of events. He didn't let the process play itself out even just a little bit..

Miz will be throwing 103 tonight and doubt he gets lit up but who knows, Harold Renolds on MLB said he reminds him of a young Adam Wainwright back in 2005.

I agree.. just saying Civale didn't give the situation a second to breathe.

If Civale agrees with Milwaukee that he is not presently a major league starter then Civale automatically loses millions in free agency in the off season.

Gallardo was a highly regarded prospect.

Hell, Manny Parra was as high regarded(going off rankings) as Misiorowski was. Even Taylor Jungman and...I think Willy Peralta were on top 100 lists(Josh Hader as well).

It seemed like he fell from last year when the Brewers moved him to the pen last year to preserve his arm and have him finish up with less stress.

But top 25...I think Gallardo and then Sheets and Neugebauer. But Misiorowski was closer to 60 on the top 100 lists. Hader was #19 on Baseball Prospectus, but...nevre used him as a starter. I'd imagine Woody or Burnes had retained their prospect rankings after the playoff run and were ranked pretty high...

Most anticipated SP since Gallardo though. Back then, finding a starting pitcher in this organization was like...finding a piece of gold i your backyard.

And rankings aside, we've all been dreaming about what Misiorowski could be since he was drafted(or at LEAST the futuresgame).

Gallardo pre-2007 was #16 on Baseball America, #14 on Baseball Prospectus.

Pretty cool article at FanGraphs today breaking down Misio's first start and comparing his slider/changeup to some fastballs of days gone by with similar velocity and movement profiles.

I hope Miz pounds the cubs even more than the cards.

Can't wait for that day.

Wow, what a list to look over. You know, I forget the stat exactly.. but when Burnes and Woodruff both arrived on the scene the Brewers broadcast put out a stat of the most wins by a homegrown pitcher in Brewers history and Manny Parra was really high on the list ... which more so was stating how badly we have produced home grown pitching in our team's history.

Ah, Mike Jones.  Back in the day, he was in the same conversation with Fielder, Hart and Hardy.

I had blended Mike Jones with Mark Rogers in my memory.

Mark Rogers actually pitched for the Brewers, right? Thought Mike Jones just couldn't crack AA or AAA with his injuries.

He made it to AAA.  I had hoped he would get a September callup for being a good organizational soldier, but just didn't happen.  Rogers did pitch for the Brewers.
