I also enjoy this thread, and I’m going to make what seems like an annual request.

If you post a picture that doesn’t show the player’s name, could you please put a label on it. Especially for those really obscure players.

Division and #1 seed: 24

Clinch the postseason: 15

We have a new "next team to be eliminated" - Pittsburgh: 5

Washington joins Colorado in no longer being able to catch the Brewers - they're too "Light" in the win column:

Your magic number to clinch the postseason is off by 1 because the Brewers own the tiebreaker over the Reds. Reds have 65 losses so the most wins they can get is 97. Brewers have 83 wins which would make the magic number 14 not 15.

Also for the same reason your magic number for the Pirates to be eliminated is off by 1 as well. Brewers have the tiebreaker over the Pirates and Pirates have 75 losses. Most wins they can get is 87 which means the magic number to eliminate them is 4.

Absolutely love this thread for two reasons:

1. It's become an annual routine thread started in late summer because the Brewers keep finding themselves in playoff contention atop their division.

2. Its a great way to go back in time and remember players you forgot ever donned a brewer uniform.  I loved Abbott growing up and completely lost the fact he was a Brewer at the end of his career.  That said, almost a 7 ERA in 1999 probably had alot to do with my recall, lol.

What's also great about posting Jim Abbott (though primarily to me) is that he was the starting pitcher for the California Angels in the 1989 game that was my first date with my (now 36-year) SO!

Of course, Abbott shut out the Brewers 6-0.  Fortunately that was not a harbinger for the relationship. ☺️

Thanks - this is also why Wash went from 3 yesterday to 0 today. I'll try to be more careful.

When we get to the Phillies series next week, it'd be good to take at least one of those games to earn the tiebreaker on them - I think even if they sweep us to go 3-3 on the season. we are ahead of them on the next tiebreaker criteria. They're currently the top rival for the #1 seed (tied with Cubs' magic #). Gotta watch out for SD, too, since we do have another series with them and we're currently 1-2 against them.

Joey Meyer was a big part of my introduction to major Brewers fandom in the late-80s. The big, lumbering 1B/DH once launched a HR 600 feet in Denver's thin air. I truly thought he was going to be a Brewers superstar. Alas ...

Just thought I'd put our final 28 games in context to get the magic number to zero. I debated putting this in the "optimism thread", but here we go!

  • If the Brewers just keep their current winning pace: 61.9% We would go 17-11 and finish with a record of 100-62.

Just to tie the Brewers:

  • The Dodgers need to go 23-5 (82.1%)
  • The Cubs or Phillys would need to go 24-5 (82.7%)

I like those odds.

Not to go all "well, actually" on you, if the Reds and Brewers are involved in a three-way tiebreaker, the head to head with the Reds goes out the window. So, to be completely safe, and put the Reds safely in the rear view mirror, the magic number could stay at 15.

Pretty sure I will have already lost the will to live if we are talking about three-way tiebreakers for the last playoff spot in another month.

The well actually that needs to be well actually'd. What you said isn't necessarily true. If there's a 3 way tie and one team has a better record than other two teams they are tied with then they win the tiebreaker. Brewers own the tiebreaker against both the Mets and Reds so if somehow those 3 ended up tied to end the year the Brewers would have the tiebreaker and be the top seed among those 3 teams.

That negates nothing of what I said. You said 14 is the number. All I said is that 15 safely eliminates the Reds. If the Brewers get to 15 against the Reds, there will be no tiebreaker with them. If they keep it at 14, then the Reds are in the mix. You are assuming the Mets are the third team, but if it is the Padres, it is a different matter.

I mean it does. You said the head to head goes completely out the window in a three-way tie which just isn't true. Magic Number to eliminate the Reds is now 13.

There are scenarios where the Reds are not eliminated with 13 and it goes to tiebreakers.
