5 game lead with 12 games to go.

I’m going to be disappointed if the Brewers don’t sweep this series. This will be the first time since the Pirates provided the last 3 wins to secure the George Webb burgers that the Brewers will be playing a team at home that has no playoff possibilities at all. It’s also the most favorable series they have left.

If they don’t at least win the series some alarm bells might be going off.

It's baseball.  Sometimes bad teams win games.  There are some reasons for concern already (the IL list, the teetering bullpen, the workload on Ashby and Uribe, the drop in bat speed from several players that Matt wrote about), but you can't reasonably demand/assume a sweep against any team.  if they drop 2 or get swept then that will likely be because those warning signs noted above continue to be a problem.

I know it's worrying season because this is, or is rapidly nearing, the time of year when things to to hell for the Brewers since 2007 or so, but if they go .500 the rest of the season they set a franchise record for wins and the Cubs would have to finish the season on a 14 game win streak to win the division.  Let's try to enjoy the last 2 weeks of the regular season!  Plenty of time to be miserable when the playoffs get here and they're playing teams with $200-300 million on the payroll every series.  :)

I am not expecting a sweep since the Angels still have Mike Trout but it is pretty close, the Brewers are trotting out their playoff starting pitching against a poor team.

So if we lose 5 in-a-row

and the Cubs win 5 in-a-row

0 game lead with 7 to play

(and they have the season tie breaker)

Let’s agree that Murphy is playing September perfectly.

I was worried we would not have meaningful baseball in late September and the team would risk complacency. 🙂

It seems like he is keeping everyone fresh, hopefully all our injuried pitchers get back and have some innings the last couple weeks to get in a grove for the playoffs.

Shohei on the bump for the Dodgers against the Phillies.

The Dodgers are evil.  Clearly.  They're going to be profoundly "meh" when the Brewers benefit from them winning and then go on a tear when it hurts the most.  lol

Thank you for the tutorial, but I know it’s baseball and I know that bad teams win games against good teams, I did not say that I demand, or even expect a sweep, just that I will be disappointed if they don’t get it. I’m sorry if that’s considered unreasonable.

I am enjoying the last part of the season. It’s fun having games that you can look forward to every day that have a bearing on reaching goals all teams have. There have been many, many years where that wasn’t the case. But, when the team is in prime, position to get a first round bye it would be pretty upsetting to cough it up, and over to the Cubs no less.

BTW, your arithmetic is wrong. If the Brewers finish 6-6 the Cubs only have to go 11-1 to win the division. I’m probably more concerned about the Brewers part of that equation. If they don’t win the Angels series they would have to make that up against better teams.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Thank you for being pedantic.  Glad to hear you're more worried about the Brewers than the other parts of that equation, although I'm not sure why it would matter if they lose the series against the Angels if the Cubs aren't winning, which you seem to assume is inevitable.

Go Brewers.

The biggest question for that game is whether the Pirates will score a run to give Skenes and the Pirates bullpen a chance to win.

Fangraphs has the Brewers expected winning percentage at .538. The probability of them losing 5 in a row is then .462^5 or 2.1%  The Cubs expected win percentage is .519 so winning 5 games in a row is 3.7%.

I was merely correcting the poster who said they would have to go undefeated the rest of the way.

Go Brewers.

I do not assume that the Cubs winning is inevitable. I would just prefer that the Brewers stop opening the door and inviting them to make a move.
The Phillies have already taken advantage of that opportunity to cut a 9 game deficit to one and a half games. The Cubs haven’t made as much progress but we can’t assume they won’t.

Then we will be tied for 1st with the Cubs with 7 to play just like you said and we better in more than them in the last 7 games. 😁

How many different ways can this board say, "we may win it, we may lose it." With an emphasis on the pessimistic side.

I'm going to the game tonight. It's so easy to be optimistic in the crowd. My cheering doesn't just echo to my living room walls. You feel the energy from the rest of the people. Good luck with the game thread.

Instead of brewerfanatic.com we could change the name to worrywarts.com

I mean yes, that is how math works. The point is it's incredibly unlikely that that actually happens.
